I’ve just watched what I could stomach on the video the water made me shudder and there’s people sat on that bench like it’s some sort of tourist attraction, if it was summer they’d be sticking an ice cream van there.

In fairness to him I think the media have quoted him out of context for the most part. He's stated that he would usually manage to find a body in a lake within the hour but that it takes longer in a moving body of water. He also said that he could cover about 10 miles per day of straight river but that this would be more complex and he wouldn't really know time scales until he got out there.
I can understand why they conceded if it's something the family were really pushing for and quite honestly, in their situation, I would have contacting him too!
I imagine he has one eye on securing further police contracts but he's probably also a decent bloke who wants to help and has the equipment available.
I'll be interested in any statement he makes at the end of today's search, if he makes one.
As you say though, the poor family. I hope they have some answers soon.

Cost/Budgets
I don’t know if this link will work but it’s Lancs Live Facebook page and they interview Peter Faulding at the scene. (ETA at about 1min30s)
He says today they are focusing on the section of river from the weir to the estuary. Usually their sonar can cover around 10 miles a day.
Peter said Paul contacted him directly and is distraught. I do think this guy is reputable, he already works for the police in the south east. I just think he has a bit of arrogance about how successful he is but let’s see if he’s right. I actually hope he is so the family can have some closure.
ETA I definitely sense from him though that he doesn’t think she is in the river. Which is interesting given he also knows they don’t have equipment as good as his.

As for his uneducated claims, it beggars belief he calls himself an expert.

I actually get a much better feeling from him when he’s talking in an interview than when he’s quoted. It seems like a lot of his quotes have been taken out of context.

I didn’t think he came across great/knowledgeable with his claims in this interview, perhaps someone’s educated him a little since.

I remember this - people were bombarding the local police department with calls and tweets demanding they searched for things they could see on Google Earth.
Perhaps they do if they want it to look like an accident
I went on a 1 day CSI course in Halifax(?) recently...excellent course, highly recommended - run by former and acting senior officers of Greater Manchester Police, etc. Anyway, one of the questions we raised was about how police allocate their resources, eg, divers, sniffer dogs, etc. The reply was that years ago, every force had its own divers, dogs and other specialist teams.
Nowadays, they are either pooled between several police forces, or outsourced to external operators. They have to literally order a dog/diver/excavation expert in. My husband asked about whether cost of the operation is ever in the lead officer's mind in cases such as this. The response was "no", but they do try to barter resources to save money. Eg, if a force A needs a sniffer dog, they might say to force B, hey if you let us use your sniffer dog, we'll give you our diver for free next time you need one.

I wonder if she maybe went to the edge and tripped over her own feet or a stone and it made her run uncontrollably down the bank into the water? And that’s why there’s no marks etc? It’s happened to me before when I was younger but I ended up banging into the railing that went along the river which saved me from going in…feel so sad for her girls

Just wondering why you think the coat length impractical?
When some one has MH and they go missing don't they usually say this person is vulnerable. Not seen them mention this.
However they could be withholding some information

Only if it’s known that the person has MH difficulties. Some people are extremely skilled at maintaining their usual day-to-day lives and ‘keeping up appearances’ without anyone else knowing there’s a problem.
To be clear - I’m absolutely not suggesting that this is the case for Nicola.
I do think the phone being left has thrown people off, I don’t personally think I would sit my phone on the bench in that situation, I’d put it in my back pocket most likely.. but maybe others wouldn’tI think it is a simple as this, the dog was either getting a drink from the rivers edge or was sniffing about there and couldn't get back up the bank, Nicola put her phone down to go to help Willow, because Willows harness was off so she had nothing to grab to pull her up she has had to of gone down to help her and had to either try to lift her mid waist or pushed her up from the rear end and I think she's fell into the river unfortunately, its happened to me many a time with my English Bull Terrier, I fell into water once only luckily, and it was a reservoir not a river, but the amount of times my dog couldn't get up the embankment which to look at wasn't that steep. I also used to take my dogs harness off in case she wanted to go into the water so it wouldn't get wet or weigh her down, plus she wasn't keen on her harness and collar as she never wears anything at home, oh and when I fell into the water she wasn't even bothered she just carried on sniffing about, jmho
