Blatant lies
this girl is a compulsive liar.

If that were true, if she truly only ever recommended products she genuinely reviewed and loved, surely there’d be more of a balance? We’d see her review products and say “meh”

in years of following her, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her push a product, from joggers to undies to shampoo - that hasn’t been the “best ever”, the “most comfy” thing ever, the most stunning, beautiful, gorgeous, best smelling thing that made her feel like a goddess etc.

I doubt she’s ever turned down a promo opportunity in her life.

the sad thing is, this is a lie she probably tells to herself to help her sleep at night. This girl exists in a bubble in her own mind and she’s the only person that really matters. She’s probably convinced herself it’s a happy coincidence that every single product she receives or is paid to promotr she just happens to love.

this strategy isn’t even innovative. It’s just a tactic Nelly has stolen.

years ago, back when blogging was a bigger deal and before it had really moved across to Insta, this was the tactic adapted by a lot of lifestyle bloggers. The type who would pretend to be your bestie, just a girl like you. A lot of them would pot that they’d never recommend a product they didn’t truly love. Rosie Londoner is a prime example of this, she had a long standing deal with a thickening shampoo company that she never declared for years. When ASA started cracking down, the line all but vanished. Most of them knew it was a transparent lie because they had to be upfront about being paid or given it as a freebie.

she’s also written under one of her posts that she doesn’t do hauls anymore - a blatant lie. She posted the house of CB haul not that long ago, and that sexy lingerie stuff she paraded around in while her dad was fixing her fireplace - that’s still a haul, no?

I used to feel sorry for her, but this girl deserves her very obvious and self inflicted loneliness. Who would want to be friends with someone this profoundly dishonest? She cries because she has no plans on a bank holiday weekend and instead of resolving to do something about it - she makes a reel, spins it in her own head so that it’s just something normal and part of life. That way, she never has to truly change anything in her life or about herself.

I’d feel sorry for her, but she is willing to blatantly lie and exploit other people. She just deserves contempt at this point.

She’s that bland I don’t even think she listens to music, if she did we’d see a montage of her and B doing a funky dance to it as exciting content

The cinnamon swirl pancake that she’s passed of as as her own recipe is also a copy. Saw someone posted it on tiktok last week.

Did it just take her 3 hours to carve a basic pumpkin design, on a Monday, when everyone else is working?

I can't, her life is so tedious.

I honestly think she’s losing her mind or heading towards a breakdown.

her whole life is inside that flat pretty much. Presumably B is working during most days so she’s alone, inside those four walls.

she has nothing to do, nothing to really break the days up, no one to talk to… no wonder she’s becoming increasingly bizarre.

I was on gardening leave for a few weeks and couldn’t really do much (saving for a wedding ha) and I got so bored just spending my days watching friends on repeat. I tidied the whole house, had a declutter but then there wasn’t much to do and I got huge cabin fever - and I still went out most days for a walk/coffee, socialised with friends on weekends etc, which is more than Nelly seems to do.

the thing is, the more you hole yourself up like that, the more scary and overwhelming socialising becomes, so the more you stay indoors and it becomes a catch 22.

So what was the point of that break she took? She's just come back even more self absorbed and insufferable.

literally. I think her angle is just to get validation from as many likes as possible tbh.

christ on a bike.

sorry but I just don’t see how this is body positivity or in any way empowering. It’s catering to the male gaze completely and convincing other women that appealing to the male gaze is empowering. A dangerous lie.

what woman has ever dressed up in an impractical buckle bra and suspenders with no purpose and though, gee, I really do feel empowered.

Is it really empowering if you only feel good because you know men will find it attractive? I don’t think so, personally.

I have a jumper that’s super old and my fiancé hates, but it’s super comfy and I like how it makes me feel. It’s not super flattering in that it doesn’t really accentuate my figure at all, but it’s super pretty IMO. Surely that’s what is truly empowering? When you’re dressing/behaving for how it makes you feel about yourself, for yourself? That’s what it means to me anyway.

I’ve said it time and time again but the way she bigs up her posts is genuinely sad. Putting a pumpkin on your head is hardly new content but her caption “Hahahhaha please scroll through them, please” like to her this is genuinely hilarious.
In her head everything she posts is groundbreaking

It’s sad how much she seems to genuinely believe she’s doing something positive with her posting.

for anyone interested, the male gaze is a term coined by academic Laura Mulvey a 1973 paper Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. In a nutshell, she summed up how the cinema is largely defined by men (still true even today), and this has huge cultural implications (again, still true today when the industry is even bigger than it was in the 70s).

The male writers and producers of movies, write about makes for the male audience. Female characters exist in terms of how they exist to the male. Take James Bond and Moneypenny for example; in the older movies she serves a purpose and we view her as how James views her - an unimportant, sexualised being who can provide some flirty banter and sexual tension.

the later movies (produced by a woman, Barbara Broccoli) recognises some of the misogny of the earlier bond films. So we get a fleshed out moneypenny - she’s not just some secretary. She’s capable, shaintelligien, she has a backstory and motivation for why she’s office based. We understand her motivations. We understand why she has that intimacy with Bond.

this article explores some other examples of the male gaze in cinema and it’s prevelant in most movies;

And this article writes about how this male gaze, translates into everyday life and social media:

to quote:
“Platforms, like Instagram, with the original purpose of sharing experiences and candid moments with your followers and friends are now fraught with self-promotional idealism. These photos must be edited with filters and uploaded at the perfect time to maximise interaction and likes. Before it can be seen, it needs to be made desirable.

It’s not even surprising that we do this. From a young age, women are taught that a man’s ‘gaze’ is valued more in society and this is further engrained through our experiences, media, workplace and home life.”

even though Nelly claims her insta is all authentic realism, we know it’s not. Her name is a lie for one. She presents an image of a woman who is confident in her body, when in fact she suffers from anxiety to the extent she can’t go out in public. Her “body positive” posts present an idealised view that all women’s body’s are attractive and normal. She fails to understand that by setting the bench mark as “beautiful” or “normal” she’s missing the point - “beautiful”, “normal”, “a work of art” are all standards set by the male gaze.

she’s trying to negotiate the standards of the male gaze to be inclusive, instead of realising women shouldn’t be pandering to it at all. It’s to her own detriment but worse, it’s to the detriment of everyone she normalises this position to.

Cor her skin tone when pulling off the pumpkin looks like she’s trying to be a ghost. Doesn’t look healthy.

She’s made me feel a bit ill. Yes love the fact you’re not wasting food Nelly/Helena, but that pumpkin has been on your greasy head 🤮 touching your hair and now you’re serving it up for dinner. Maybe it’s just me but I found that a bit stomach turning.

Sparkly soup anyone!? Also she films herself doing everything, never looking at the camera as if it’s hidden, the proceeds to write comments all over the story. Why not just talk and explain what you’re doing instead of pretending you haven’t seen the camera and writing it on the story. I can’t with this saddo

I thought the same but wasn’t sure if I was overreacting 😂
She also said donate it to a food bank? Surely they wouldn’t accept a carved pumpkin 😂 she is so out of touch with reality.
