Why the duck are they doing this?! 😂😂 Truck is perfectly valid, my husband is from The US and he says truck 🤷‍♀️ Actually so does my 6 year old because of all the damn Blippi she watched when she was younger 🙄

Wow, what a prick. Seriously going the extra mile to call someone out for using a minor Americanism. Passive aggressive head. “But I don’t understaaaand… please explain!”

I’ve made an observation today.

The other week there was a thread where a poster admitted they were indeed being unreasonable and they recognised that, but wanted advice. She said she had a crush on a 17 year old (in the public eye not her life)
Obviously this is inappropriate and poster openly admitted it was bad, was asking how to go forward.

She was absolutely ripped to shreds, just torn apart in the thread. Called some harsh things. A few posters popped in mid-thread to be sanctimonious and imply things. One person said ‘I don’t think young people would be safe with you’ and when the poster was accused of ‘sick fantasises’ and she asked ‘what sick fantasises?’ I haven’t shared anything like that!’ The poster said ‘ooh see what you are doing, you are asking because you are trying to get people to describe fantasises to you’

Again - not justifiable but poster didn’t think she was.

Thread was a tit show.

There is a thread about a 17 year old girl threatening something very nasty.

The thread is full of ‘she’s not a child/this is an almost adult behaving this way/she is 17 not 7, she’s hardy a child!’

Sure it could be different posters, but it seems posters go one way or another and just pile on when it suits them, but there is such a double standard.

None of that surprises me. I left MN quite a while ago but it was always apparent that the first few responses to a thread dictated the tone of the thread going forward. It would only take one harsh reply to open the floodgates to a torrent of really aggressive, nasty posters. Absolute vultures! You can tell they really enjoy sticking the boot in as well.

Bloody hell

They'll probably use the excuse that because it's such a bit forum, they're limited on what they can do. (ie, they don't have the resources to moderate everyones first post / have them submitted only if admin approve, ban IPs, etc)

That place is just so toxic. I've just deregistered. There's some really nasty people over there. It was affecting my mental health.

I’ve been thinking about this over the last few days and I’ve come to the decision not to lurk on Mumsnet again. The place is toxic, full of miserable bitter people and it’s making me feel miserable. And seeing as it keeps crashing on my phone (only website to do so), it’s a clear sign that I need to.

Absolutely agree with the points above to be honest. I feel like it’s made me question my sense of reality and I’ve found myself doubting myself about things which are really just common sense. Mumsnet is not real life and I absolutely will not be shouted at for daring to knock on someone’s door, and I don’t need to feel guilty for eating a sandwich at lunch and then pasta for dinner 🙄

I too will not be going on there again. Shame as I once received some kind and good advice about a personal issue, but those days are long gone.

That is happening right now on a thread about a bloke stealing the last bottle of fabric conditioner in the supermarket.

Does anybody struggle with keeping away from it? It leaves a gap. I like coming here though. Felt tons better since being off it.

Can anybody recommend some decent Reddit groups?

Actually, did anyone feel as though the unpleasantness was affecting their personality? I've become so much more cynical and hard bitten since being there. It kind of gets inside you and alters your way of thinking about things, it's really weird.

Somebody should do a thesis about this phenomenon 😄 you can see how young people get sucked into horrible sites and it can affect them.

Yes I had to keep reminding myself it wasn't real, and resetting myself in some way.

A number of years ago it had really useful advice, particularly about relationships, that led me to challenge what I'd been taught about them and what I'd been socialised into. I will always be glad about being encouraged into that shift of thinking.

MN does have some really useful and sensible life advice among all the madness. It's getting a bit fewer and far between though and some posters there seem to set themselves up as MN tropes as soon as they begin to post on a thread.

Eg: "You sound a bit snobby, OP" as soon as someone dares exercise a particular opinion or taste. It's tedious, and childish. Like people rushing to show that they're part of the gang. I noticed that Tattle had rather a reputation over there, but I've found very nuanced chat on a number of topics here.

Edit: I think I misread your comment? I'll leave my comment up anyway in case other people want some site recommendations.

Can't recommend any reddit groups I'm afraid. I love Datalounge, though I don't post. I sometimes browse Metafilter and Lolcow. For anyone considering lolcow, it's very important you read the rules before posting. Never include your email.

I'd love more sites for Brits! Especially ones not dominated by politics or sports... or men!

There's definitely a kind of group think there.

I used to fantasise about posting a ridiculous thread about someone saving a kitten to see how many replies would say I was being unreasonable 'cos.....

"Cats are evil"

"The kitten will grow up and crap in people's gardens"

"It could have scratched you and you'd end up taking a valuable place in A&E and a toddler might miss out on medical help 'cos of you"

"You'd not get the kitten neutered and you'll end up with millions of kittens and you're really selfish and cruel and all your family should go no contact with you"

"The kitten will grow up to be a psychopathic, narcissistic drug runner and cause ruin to teenagers and lead to a crime spree"

"The kitten will grow up to be a murderous megalomaniac and start WWIII"

I mean, some of them would literally come out with stuff like that 😄😄😄

Bloody crazy 🤪

It did affect me in a lot of ways I became more bitter and cynical and a lot more miserable over time. I remember getting attacked on there and sobbing thinking “I’m not strong enough for this”.

I remember the day I deregged and spent hours waiting until I could come from work and de-reg. When I finally did, I felt as though a cloud had lifted and I felt so calm.

This thread is a hoot
All bending over backwards to present themselves as VERY middle class.
