I didn't get the alert. Mr WT says it's because I won't be of any use in the new world as I'm passed child bearing age. Have to say if that's all they want me for it's a relief. He was joking - I think

I haven't read any messages where someone has mocked someone for choosing to opt out.

I do think there's lots of misplaced anger, it should be at apple and Google for building the function into phones if someone is annoyed by it. Seems a very British problem as other countries use the tools without such pushback.

Such a minor thing. I'd save my frustration for when the government is running silly ad campaigns telling people to make sure they've cooked their meat all the way through. Now that is annoying!

Local environment agencies have been doing flood warnings for years. For the areas affected. I have lived through a few.Works quite well and doesn't involve the whole country.

And it wouldn't involve the whole country with this, either. The idea of the system is that it can be used either nationally or local to even on specific phone mast.

In Germany we have sirens that go off in case of emergency (not just war-related but also during severe weather, big fires etc) and they also do routine tests every few months.
After the horrific flood we had two years ago, last December was the first time they also used cell broadcast which I think is what will be used in the UK? (If it is be warned: the sound it makes is absolutely horrendous) so that more people can be quickly reached and also be told what to do. Main issue with the flood was that people were warned too late so I think it‘s a really good thing to have on your phone!

It was such a non-event last time I can't even remember what the sound was like, it was so unscary. Some people were panicing about the noise for weeks leading up to it

I’ve just been on my area’s Nextdoor app. There’s a lady on there who advised people to take the SIM out of their phone, turn it off, then wrap in tinfoil and put it in the microwave. She also suggested a Faraday cage (I knew the one I stashed under the sink would come in useful one day).
She was deadly serious and delighted when a couple of others smuggly joined in because “they are the ones who know what really going on”. I’d hate to live my life in perpetual fear of perceived threat.

It sounds like she's probably got mental health issues so it's really nice of you to make fun of her on a public forum.

Because of so many reasons already stated over and over. People with dementia, people who are neurodivergent, domestic abuse survivors who have a hidden phone, etc.

I thought people were striving to be more compassionate in the name of social justice in this day and age but I guess not.

How much is it costing the taxpayer? Especially if a lot of people don’t want them and a lot not even receiving them , how many people are actually prepared in the event of an emergency with the limited resources we now have available, I think we’ve only got two ambulances to cover a very large area and certainly no army personnel to help.

I mean I think if your house was about to be flooded you would probably want to get your family and pets out if you could, a tiny bit of advanced warning and knowing where was available to go would be useful

I definitely think there's a difference between people who don't trust the government and think they want to make people afraid and the group of people who think the alert is going to activate the COVID chip inside your body ()

I didn't get an alert, neither did my husband, mum or sister I haven't asked anyone else

I think it's a good idea and have left mine on because I'm curious! I'm a bit nervous about how loud it will be but that's just because I'm nervy by nature.
