The problem is people like you thinking everyone should think like you otherwise they are " the conspiracy crowd".

I don't think that. Some people do, admittedly.

And grew up not wanting constant government intervention in their lives.

I don't want "constant government intervention" either, but I don't consider a one off emergency alert test, or indeed a vaccine, to be "constant intervention".

Concerns that apparently can't be discussed or even raised without being called some dumb name by dumb people.

It's possible to raise concerns without sounding like a conspiracy theorist. There were valid issues, wrt domestic violence, etc, related to this alert test. I've never said that people shouldn't complain, and if I've inadvertently implied that then that wasn't my intent.

You know if people want to have alerts let them, if they don't that's fine too. But what I find offensive is the mocking of either group.
What I find super offensive is that since covid, everyone who goes against the norm group pattern is banded under tin foil/anti vaxxer/Conspiracy theorist - When it should be respected as freedom of choice.

Are we in a modern Britain or are we in a society where anyone going against the grain should be marked with an equivalent of a scarlet letter?

The problem is that there is a quite significant overlap between those complaining about things like this and the conspiracy theory crowd. Obviously it's not 1:1 though.

I didn't get the alert. Mr WT says it's because I won't be of any use in the new world as I'm passed child bearing age. Have to say if that's all they want me for it's a relief. He was joking - I think

My mum didn't get it either and I joked it's because she's old and "they're" trying to get rid of the elderly

My aunt’s in Canada and gets them a lot for missing children to prevent people taking them out of the country and they’ve managed to get people caught before they’ve gone

Because of so many reasons already stated over and over. People with dementia, people who are neurodivergent, domestic abuse survivors who have a hidden phone, etc.

I thought people were striving to be more compassionate in the name of social justice in this day and age but I guess not.

this is a valid point, but it also works both ways. i have ocd and (sometimes extreme) contamination based anxiety - the idea of an alert brings me and my neurodivergent self some degree of comfort as i know that, if something happened, i would have hopefully have time to speak to my family, complete tasks, ensure i’m prepared etc. i agree that there is the flip side where it causes undue anxiety though.

ultimately i think you can never make everyone happy and there are steps (like turning off the alerts etc) for those people who would prefer not to hear it. everyone is different and deals with these things differently.

I don’t get the fuss other countries have it. We were in Florida last year getting them due to a tropical storm.
My mum got sent a ‘forward’ message today about how they’re dialing up the 5g so high to send it that it’ll affect your brain the message encouraged people to go to the woods where the trees will protect them and to trust them as they have it on good authority. It was brilliant .

Luckily my mum isn’t stupid.

I think it’ll be useful if I’m in London for the day and something happened that it might be used for. I’ll probably keep it on as I don’t expect it to be used much.

To be fair while I can see and appreciate why flood warnings may be useful for some, this emergency alert not likely to be a system I will ever require,. I don't and am not likely to ever live near anywhere that will flood and if the bomb is going to drop, whats the point in telling us when there's nothing that can be done. I'd rather not know.

I think what most may possibly be objecting to is not the conspiracy theory stuff but the constant nannying/patronizing hand holding. Akin to tannoy announcements saying it's raining so the floor is wet. Have we really become THAT stupid?

We didn’t get it our house. Wifi is on as i’m wfh today, the only good thing to come out of covid, which coincidentally we didn’t get either.

I’ve left it on. Don’t see what the fuss is about personally but will need to cover my son’s ears as he cannot bear loud noises (sensory issues). I’m not even allowed to use the hoover unless he’s out of the room and he panics if someone sets a timer on the phone/smart speaker.

And we’d jam the roads pretty quick if we tried to escape. I remember seeing footage of people in America in gridlock on the freeways/highways when there was some evacuation due to storms a few years back. Imagine the same scene in UK when a whole city gets jammed because of a broken down car My city has a lot of one way nonsense in the centre and one day a van caught fire and people going to work (it was around 8.30am) were jammed all around the city for at least 2 hours. In the UK I think we are more likely to get localised alerts for flooding saying to not go out in the car, or, in high heat maybe we’ll get “drink some water”

I was once stuck in a jam for over 2 hours (less than a mile from home) because a bin lorry fell over

I love it how places like GB news and Talk tv who are so outraged about this "ear piercing sound" that they act will kill people out of shock is being tested at a well publicised time are playing said sound unannounced several times a day

GBeebies and TalkTV are similar to the Daily Mail. They pretend to care about things that they know will get their audiences riled up.

How do people cope with any noise at all, if an alert scares them to death? Better not set a morning alarm, it might kill you.
