Oh so leaving her management is presumably the big scary change she kept banging on about. Not very interesting for the viewer tho and probably didn't need a big clickbaity video.
I hope not, but you're probably right. That's a big change for her but definitely not a big or significant thing for her viewers, unless she's planning to discuss it any further.

So apparently they didn't get a proper survey done when they purchased the house? That kind of stuff is just basic due diligence especially when buying an older property. Interesting that she's choosing to post about fast fashion again...I guess it's the only way she can make any claims to sustainability given the complete hypocrisy in every other aspect of her life. Of course, it's easy to prance around and yodel about how sustainable you are when companies are sending you fugly linen moo-moo smocks and other clothes for free and you can afford to shop on etsy.

Maybe the house is mortgage free as older properties you have to have a full survey done on them as so often they are patched up with bodge jobs!

Where did you find this out from? I figured that was what had happened because of the way they were talking about the 'hidden costs' but they're not really hidden costs, you just didn't pay a surveyor to find them... Seems totally bonkers to buy a large old home without getting someone to check the structural aspects of it.

Even if they were mortgage free, what's a few grand for a survey when you're buying a home worth that much.

I was going to say I'm pretty certain a survey is non negotiable if you get a mortgage.

My understanding is that what you need for a mortgage approval is a very basic mortgage valuation. This isn’t for the buyer at all, it’s effectively an assurance for your lender that there is a viable asset worthy of the loan it’s giving you. Confusion arises because the property buyer has to foot the bill for this basic survey (which is often done by drive by!) so buyers think it’s for their benefit but it’s really not.

Problems arise in these surveys usually only if there is major structural problems ie maybe if the house is uninhabitable and needs gutting, the stairs are so damaged you can’t get to the second floor, roof needs replacing etc. Something very obvious. In this situation you may have a shortfall eg you want 300k and the mortgage valuation says its only worth 250k you will need to find 50k to make up the shortfall.

From the buyers point of view there is then effectively three levels of surveys (this is all optional and all on top of the required mortgage valuation) you can buy to get an idea of what you want to buy. The most in-depth is recommended for older properties like madeleines and would have picked up the re-wiring issues. The lightest one is recommended for new builds (but I wouldn’t - new builds can be nightmares) and medium for everything inbetween.

The most in-depth survey can cost several thousand pounds (say £4K ish) - seems like a lot at the time but saves so much money in the long run. Did Maddy get this survey? I doubt it. Would she have been able to get a mortgage for her property without it and without any survey that she did get (mortgage valuation or otherwise) picking up the electricity issues? Yes.

(Should add I used to know about all this for work but no longer in the property industry so will happily stand corrected)

eta: I apologise for this dull af post! Reading it back over made me want to fall asleep 😴

I think it can depend I purchased an old property and all the wiring and windows were picked up in the survey. From memory it was the most basic one.
I can’t believe how much they overpayed for the size of it and all the work they need to do. It must be a minimum of 80k worth of work.

Sorry, but what has happened to her channel?! I skipped through the latest vlog, and she's going on about needing to buy a second car? Goodness, she's really became the type of person that thinks buying an electric car means they are sustainable..... forgetting that they already have another car, choose to move to an isolated place with insufficient (is it?) public transport and no longer wanting to cycle or walk.... or just plan better. They work together, seriously it's not like they both need to commute to different places.

Sorry, but seriously, are all the positive comments just coming from new viewers who only know M as a wealthy home renovator....not M the former R to 4, then sustainable minimalist?

That vlog was just a string of justifications for unsustainable behaviour
- "I'm a food blogger" so therefore need to buy a lot of food and house it in a renovated kitchen...... so how did she manage to put out all these e-books and film videos whilst living in smaller spaces?
- "Need a second car" because the partner is away getting an MOT so therefore she is without one.... as if multiple car households are the norm, how did she manage all these years when she couldn't drive, and then when they shared a car?

Also, ofcourse there are lots of people, on youtube especially who are financially able to afford to buy and renovate multiple homes, and have multiple cars, but wasn't M's whole niche about being sustainable?

I'm glad she's still vegan though, but domesticated animals are a bit of a tricky topic.

Does anyone else find it odd that they didn't empty and clean the cupboards when they moved in? To have lived in a house for months and then discover someone else's hot water bottle seems really weird to me because when I move house the first thing I do is clean everywhere.

18 months since a lot of us were sent home from work (and just as a lot of us are returning) and Maddy gives us the top tip that if you're struggling to work from home, try setting up a dedicated workspace..... Aside from this being so obvious, a lot of us aren't priveleged enough to have a separate office and everyone who can probably did it over a year ago. Thank you for imparting that wisdom on us. Good grief.

All she seems to do is moan and she doesn’t come across as grateful for all the things she has. She has MAC pc, she has massive house (yes it needs work but they have a house), they have pets, they have a car, they live in a beautiful area with access to the beach, they are their own boss, they have a massive garden, etc etc yet she seems so miserable.

I discovered Madeleine a couple of years ago and actually really liked her up until recently. The need to obsess over every little thing is starting to grind on me. Does it REALLY matter if something is antique bronze or brass? Everything doesn't have to match! In fact, having everything be a 100% matchy-matchy can look a bit much and try-hard. I'm an illustrator and designer so I can talk for years about colours and I get wanting things to look good but DEAR GOD give it a rest! Having a cohesive look is more nuanced than making sure your taps, door handles and drawer pulls are a perfect match.

Same. When I started down the vegan path I loved her cooking videos, but now she’s just off the rails.

She filmed herself cleaning her office then said "I hope this has been helpful". Did I imagine that? What help did she give? Did I miss tips and solutions? What does she think her viewers are?

Maddy would not cope in a real world job. "sorry i forgot to post the video as I got carried away painting" its literally your job to post a video... Imagine saying to your boss, "sorry, I forgot to attend that meeting, I got carried away painting". She's too far removed from her followers now, she doesn't even care to pots a video on time

I dont understand the her thoughts with the cupboards in the kitchen. They chose pine on the outside but have then painted it all? Also, why not just get the carpenter to spray it all before fitting? We had a carpenter do some custom furniture and the paint finish is immaculate.

Also, how lazy is she getting?! A picture of the back of her head for a thumbnail? At least try and do a before/after or something for creative. Filming two videos a week is really keeping her so busy.

I could have sworn someone on here said that they didn't get a survey done. But she has now said in the comments on the latest video that they did have a full building survey. I'm confused as to how these issues weren't picked up. When we had one done on an old property the surveyor suggested we get a separate electrical survey but perhaps this isn't a standard recommendation?

Also I find it uncomfortable when she's stood with Alex and saying 'I bought this old house, it's my responsibility'. I thought it was both of theirs?

For someone who claims to be a minimalist or consume less, she needs a lot of storage.. kitchen looks a bit crammed now.
