I don't think the McCanns are responsible. If they were they wouldn't have pushed so hard to keep the case in the public eye through books, media, fundraising etc. They would have tried to let the case slip away from the public eye as quietly as possible.
Maybe it was like a misdirection. They probably never expected all the publicity and it was past the point of no return. So many things about it don’t add up because we are missing so many pieces of the puzzle. Probably a lot of the rabbit holes people go down (myself included in the past) are irrelevant and other things fa have been overlooked. At the heart of it is a little girl who is likely long gone and just become a foot note in her own life.

My two peneth... I believe the parents know what happened. I can’t get on board with any huge P ring being involved. I think something went wrong on that holiday and and she died, either sedated and got up in the night and fell. And they panicked. They don’t want her body examined, either because of signs of abuse or sedation. What they did with her who knows. Then the publicity spiralled and overwhelmed them. The government at the time we’re trying to push a finger print ID system on everyone and used them to promote it and that’s how they got involved.
One of the other dads on the trip sounds very dodgey as has been well publicised. But I think the other people there agreed to say nothing because they didn’t know anything. The McCans will take it to their grave
I agree. They know what happened but it will never be common knowledge. I think it will be one of those cases that is never solved.

Congratulations to the people on here who've finally cracked the case, managing to do it from behind your screens with a bunch of complete strangers. FFS.
The McCanns have suffered enough without the vultures who seem to revel in their pain and distress and seem hellbent on proving their guilt, despite there being no evidence whatsoever. The Portuguese police investigation was a disaster and steeped in corruption. The child is dead, of course she is, but how anyone can think for a minute that her parents did it I have no idea. The forums talk absolute tit - so much of what has already been mentioned here is pure fabrication
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

On holiday when you go out for the evening would you leave your passport, cash and jewellery on the bed of an unlocked apartment? No of course you wouldn’t. Yet they left their CHILDREN, the most precious and valuable of all in an unlocked apartment.
These are highly educated people yet we are supposed to believe that they felt this was normal?

They have never defended the fact that they left them, which makes me think it’s a convenient cover and they would rather face criticism of that than what actually happened.

I would say that accusing a couple of 1) murdering their child 2) disposing of the body 3) staging an elaborate cover up and 4) being part of some top level paedophile ring goes beyond having an 'opinion'

They made a terrible mistake in leaving their children alone. They know that and have said as much and have paid the ultimate price. I do think that many of us get lulled into a false sense of security on holiday, feel safe and do the things we'd never dream of doing at home. I've walked home alone drunk at 3am, which I never would where I live. I've gone swimming and left my valuables unattended. Your guard is down on holiday because you're relaxed.

No, I wouldn't have left children alone in an apartment but they clearly - wrongly - thought it was safe.

Have they? I have NEVER heard either of them admitting that they were wrong to leave their children alone.

Guard down on holiday meaning you leave your 3 tiny children unattended several nights running to go on the piss with your mates? Nah. That's neglect, irresponsible and unacceptable.

Yes they absolutely have. They weren't at a nightclub, they were nearby and making regular checks. I agree it was irresponsible and the wrong thing to do but it's not proof of anything other than making a bad choice

I don't care that they weren't at a nightclub, they went out several times to get pissed with their friends. I have never seen them admit culpability at all.

Kate McCann has definitely said on a TV interview, around the time she released her book, that she regretted leaving them.

From Kate M's book:

'We collectively decided to do our own child checking service. Hand on heart it never once crossed my mind that this might not be a safe option. If I had any doubts whatsoever I simply would not have ever entertained it. The children were fast asleep and being checked every 30 minutes. We were going into the apartments as well as listening.....we now bitterly regret it and will do so until the end of our days.'

Fair enough, thank you, I had not seen that. I mean, yes, they do have to live with it for the rest of their days, but, as has been said endlessly, if they were from a council estate and had behaved the same way the reaction would have been a LOT different.

The reaction from who? They've been vilified for 15 years and they WERE investigated by social services

You're telling me a working-class unemployed couple would have got a meeting with the pope? Never ending police money given to their fund?

For educated people how could it have never once crossed her mind or the rest of the adults involved that it was unsafe?
Beggars belief.
I have never read her book so this is the first time I have ever heard her say she has regrets.

How could they listen? They were a few minutes walk away sat in a busy, noisy restaurant socialising.
They lied about the distance and tried to fob people off that it was no different to having dinner in your garden - when in fact the apartment was far away and around a corner

Or have top PR person Clarence Mitchell being their spokesperson

They had a 30 second encounter with the pope, not sure how anyone can begrudge them that.

She means they went into the apartments and saw and listened. She isn't implying they were listening from the tapas bar - which was not 'far away'. and I very much doubt they lied about the distance as it was pretty obvious to everyone where it was

Yes they did.

Not sure if links are allowed on this thread, so here's a direct quote in case it has to be deleted

Speaking on ABC's Good Morning America, the heart consultant said: "We were dining 50 yards away and we could see the apartment from where we were. It's like we were sat in our back garden, all be it at the end of our garden.
"The kids were sound asleep and they were being checked regularly. We didn't think we needed a babysitter. "We are good parents and what we did felt perfectly reasonable at the time.
"Hindsight is an incredible thing. Clearly we couldn't have predicted what was to happen."
