Baby I’s mum had actually gone on a school run:

seeing it like this hits home how often it happened shortly after parents (not just when they weren’t there)

Poor baby I's mom. Imagine getting that call while on the school run, trying to keep a sense of normality for your other children.
Being a NICU parent is incredibly hard, but having other children at home is another layer on top of it.
I have 2 older ones and the insane guilt you feel no matter where you are is incredible. You want to be there for your baby, but also trying to be there for your older kids to make sure they are ok too is so tough. My 6 year old still sometimes cries remembering that her little brother was poorly in hospital and has anxiety whenever her brother or sister are now ill.

I'm really posty today, so apologies if it's too much in one go, but I was just thinking.
What is often forgotten is that even if your baby is born prematurely or born at term and poorly and requires a stay in NICU, Dad will still only be entitled to the 2 weeks leave and Mom will unlikely get any extra leave, because maternity pay starts the moment baby is born. There is currently work being done with the Neonatal Care Bill to allow up to 12 weeks.
So if these babies are requiring care for longer than those 2 weeks, Dad's will then be back at work. Or, they may be working during their babies stay and take their paternity when they are home.
Which means, at many time, these moms will be there on their own. They may have other family visit and they may be having to sort out their older children too.
I can guarantee she knew a lot of these families schedules and routines if they were there for extended periods of time.
