Let’s see your engagement ring

Just out of pure interest and nosiness - how much were your rings approx? Those who know of course! I sometimes get engagement rings pop up on my Instagram (unmarried 32 year old so prime target audience ) and I look at them just to see how much they are and they are £1000+!!! It blows my mind something so small is so expensive! I don’t understand about diamonds or anything like that. Id feel so paranoid with such an expensive ring as I have a habit of taking rings on and off again when I’m bored, I don’t even realise I’m doing it - have lost loads of rings that way!

How long is a piece of string?

People would say my ring is overpriced, because it’s from a jewellers where ‘you’re paying for the brand name’. However for me it’s got a lifetime guarantee, free cleaning and servicing and some high street jewellers charge a fortune for that so over a lifetime I think it was a good deal It’s also platinum so it’ll never need replating - my friend was bought a white and rose gold engagement ring and it needed replating after a year or two, which will add up over the years.

I found it interesting to see how much rings differ depending on the quality of the diamonds. I tried on a few rings in high street jewellers like Goldsmiths and Beaverbrooks because not many places had pear shaped diamonds at the time and when I looked up the diamonds they used they weren’t what I’d expect for the price you’d have to pay. Some of them were yellow to the naked eye as well, which isn’t ideal unless you’re buying an actual yellow diamond haha.

I think you can get the absolute best value from either antique pieces, or going to a diamond district like Hatton Garden and choosing your own setting and stones. I’d always want to get certified stones though, so you can’t be ripped off

I think mine was somewhere between £4,500 and £5,000 I can’t remember exactly now. My husband is really particular on quality so he chose the diamond based on the specs and it was him that wanted my rings to be platinum. When my ex proposed it was with a £99 white gold ring from H Samuel. I didn’t care. I’d definitely echo bellini above, high street jewellers charge a lot for not always the best quality but it depends what you are looking for, I didn’t know anything about specs until my husband proposed

This is mine. Got married with the plain band then added the diamond thin band on our wedding first anniversary.

After returning to England last weekend I have to self-isolate. And against my best wishes my g/f came over last night to look after me as I haven't been too well.

Anyway, just before we retired for bed she took to one side and asked me to open a little present. And inside was this!

She took my right hand and slipped it on - a perfect fit. (les partners sometimes prefer right hand to left hand for ERs and WRs)

I was totally overwhelmed to the point of bursting out crying with joy, and for the simplistic/understated design, which is what I have always hinted at when discussing ERs with her in the past.

So its now official, and I can't stop looking at it

Mine was around £1400, was really surprised when I found out when we needed it added as an extra on our house insurance

A lot of rings with 'big' diamonds aren't as expensive as you might think. The size is relevant, but the clarity is important too (how few imperfections it has). I was oblivious to this!

I did then casually asked the SA for the price... £27k.... although they would negotiate on price! . I didn’t know what to say or do so I went along with it and said he might agree, poor lad. I never been so mortified!

Anyway this is said ring!

I’m definitely going to continue wearing mine, for as long as it fits! My other half would kill me if I relegated it to the drawer

I guess it might be different for people who didn’t get to pick their own and are looking for an excuse to ditch their engagement ring looool.

I can't wear mine at work so I try to remember to put it on at the weekend but I don't always.

I'm off on maternity leave now so I've been wearing it with my wedding ring the whole time. I think I'll miss it when I go back to work.

I don't wear mine at work, as a Vet Nurse, it's not appropriate. I wear it on days off though, I adore it. I love driving in the sun with it on cos it reflections glitter on the ceiling of the car!

Haha your poor bf. One thing I have learned is unless you’re an expert it’s impossible to guess the cost of diamond rings

From personal experience it’s always best to let them know your budget at the start

If you are engaged to the right person the cost honestly doesn't matter. I honestly would have said yes to a haribo ring!

Please don't judge, my ring is a 3.01 ct solitaire and I honestly wouldn't have chosen it. I absolutely adore it now that I have it but when we got engaged I would have chosen a more intricate design. It was purchased at an independent store subject to negotiation, it was £57k. It has been independently valued for more.

I am from an incredibly working class background and never dreamed of having such a ring, however if you are with the right person it doesn't matter. Eight years later we are so happy and the price tag of the ring means bugger all.

So an engagement ring ultimately costs what you want it to. A £25 ring does the same thing!

it was around £3k but could have been more or less depending on the centre diamond.
My OH is a keen cyclist and we had a deal that my ring would be the same amount as he spent on his latest road bike...

My husband's proposal was a surprise to both of us. It was very spontaneous and he didn't have a ring.

We went to tell his parents that day and his mom asked whether I had a ring. We said no and she took out one of her diamond stud earrings there and then and gave it to us to have a ring made.

It's only a 0.5ct stone in a simple setting but it means the world to me as I love my MIL to bits and she really embraced me as part of the family.

Mine was £350. My wedding ring was slightly more, approx £420 because it had to be made to fit around the engagement ring. I did see some absolutely beautiful rings for a lot of money but we couldn't afford it and neither of us liked the idea of getting into debt by putting it on a credit card.
