HMRC estimate and use previous earnings as a guide I think. I imagine she could have been earning figures like that a few years ago but probably nothing like it now.
The thing is, people are given chances to appeal what they owe. So you get a solicitor / tax specialist and try and argue the amount owed is lower by proving for instance, you didn't earn as much as they estimated. It could even keep you out of jail if you negotiate the amount down, so in effect you're no longer at the threshold for prosecution. It's odd how she didn't even try this. It seems like more evidence that she has been dishonest or criminal and she knows it. She didn't even want an expert on her side trying to prove she owes less as thy would need access to her accounts and financial info.

Maybe she couldn't find anybody willing to defend her or risk not being paid for it, OR nobody bent enough to even try?

You can't see the CD table because I nipped in quick, struck a bargain and had it sent straight to Sothebys. I tell you, I know quality when I see it, and Sothebys say it'll garner world-wide attention and will outsell Andy Warhol, Geoff Koons and Damien Hurst combined.
