His book dedication is:

"This book is dedicated to my A Level Biology teacher, who told me it was time to start aiming lower - I'm glad I didn't."

Which strikes me as a bit petty really? Like he's hung up on something one teacher said to him five years ago.

He needs to move on, my time in school was awful with all of my teachers because they didn't understand my learning disability. Uni improved my life tenfold and I don't sit and think about them all day 🙄

This is the thing right, like I'm not first gen either. But my mum went to KCL in 1987 to do a totally free nursing degree, UCAS didn't exist and her halls experience was 30 nursing students sharing one kitchen. It's nothing like the experience I had at uni. Being a "first gen student" isn't really a Thing unless it's middle class students trying to make out they aren't privileged.

He should just stop with the long messaging. It makes him look desperate.

And btw I’m first gen and from another country, so not even my teachers or friends could help me
in any way and I still made it just fine. Maybe I should also write a book?

I’ve just watched his ‘Bridgerton’ video and...what is this guy on!? Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand that this book is not for everyone but he is so pompous it’s unreal.

I completely disagree with his ‘analysis’ of the scene where Daphne exploits the Duke of Hastings in order to have children. Isn’t this the same guy who read Lolita and thought it was brilliant? The book where a middle-aged man becomes sexually involved with a 12 year old girl. What’s the difference? Why can Vladimir Nabokov write about this stuff and Julia Quinn can’t? I’ll tell you why...it’s because, in Jack’s mind, Quinn doesn’t conform to his standard of literature. Nabokov is worthy of study at an elitist university - a book he feels perfectly happy to bring up in a university interview. Quinn, on the other hand, is just for the masses.

Jack has fallen into this trap where he is trying to appease everyone in order to keep his channel going. We all know that rape is wrong but that doesn’t mean it can’t be written about in books. Get off your high horse Jack!!
Tbf, I haven't watched his video, but you can't really compare the two. I haven't read the Bridgerton books but I watched the series and the rape scene of Daphne and the Duke is never mentioned. Lolita is very obviously condemning Humbert's actions, and showing him as an unreliable narrator writing from prison...Lolita is not a book that lightly touches on pedophilia and never again, it's meant to show how easily we can be swayed by language and words. It really is a brilliant book

I think he’s kind of got a point but he’s just coming at it from the wrong way.

Any sudden, massive change to education is going to have a higher impact on already underprivileged students.

I was the first to sit the new alevels (so the year after Jack) and honestly it was horrendous. Some subjects didn’t have revision guides, all the textbooks had to be bought new not second hand as there was no one to buy them second hand from, they increased the content and our sixth form (and many others) didn’t have time to teach the full curriculum meaning we had to do self study at home. There were limited free resources online because not enough people had gone through the exams to create some, plus basically no past papers. So having to navigate through all that plus having to work a part time job meant I would have done much better in the old style a levels where there was less content, less to revise each year, cheaper textbooks and study guides, plus free resources online.

I know that’s not really the angle he’s coming at it from, but at the end of the day I honestly think Gove made the changes he did to try to return higher education to a sort of elite upper class prestige education, rather than a place of social mobility that people from a variety of socio economic backgrounds could realistically achieve to go. All his reforms have undoubtedly made it harder for poor or disabled students to achieve what they are truly capable of, and are completely old fashioned in a modern age.

Wow sorry what a rant:ROFLMAO:
Slightly more on topic I wish Jack would accept the privilege he has rather than trying to make out he was underprivileged. For example bringing awareness to charities that help widen participation, or similar - especially as he’s so set on the disadvantage of being first gen

These new bookish vids reminded me that I actually like chill/normal Jack😅.
I guess it's just his Internet persona that I find insufferable, but I'd honestly love to hang out with him irl.
Seems like a well rounded, intelligent guy
I’m just always just weirded out by his choice of pals, like he’s mate with the social climbers and others who just confuse me in terms of who he actually is

Vague as it is, I already feel like he's giving too much away about the project lol. I've been a research assistant before (although in an academic setting) and ultimately it's not my work so have always felt like I shouldn't discuss it with anyone - but maybe that's me being paranoid. I don't think I would've felt comfortable making a whole video focused on self-help books if that was the area my research job was in, at least not until I'd finished the job and then going into all this detail about the research in the latest video. Although, maybe this is part of the marketing plan down the line?

Exactly, this is no different to his main channel content. I wonder if it's that he's trying to make it as an influencer so having more subscribers across two channels looks better or something.
Oh he is definitely trying to be an influencer. He is hitting every single cliche. I can understand his thinking but its a silly business move. His channel name is not specifically named for study tube. So instead of diversifying his current channel that has a substantial following already, he is cutting off his current subscription base and starting again. It will take time to build up a new following. The studytube angle for him is likely dead, he could easily have changed forcus in his main channel and had immediate access to all his subscribers. Its like a business ignoring their current customer database and starting again

Also all his clickbaity videos with pop culture literature themes are on his main channel so that's where youtube will likely direct people.

Jack you are clearly reading here. I'm a fan, well at least enough to support you through buying your book. I love the content and as international student coming to UK your videos has given me a lot of insights to UK uni culture. But seriously don't lash out like that in twitter. Some people here have actually constructive criticism (like unite students sponsorship) and people want to talk about things without them getting lost in comment sections. Ofc there's actual haters too but do what's best and ignore them.

like 10 mins into his most recent vid he makes this joke about UK elections being more low budget than US ones in this really animated way, and the WHOLE thing is just totally lifted from this tweet... why doesn't he credit it? he does that ALL the time it's so annoying and cringey. just imagine him reading it and then rehearsing saying it so he can repeat it in his video as though it's natural....

I’m all for people experimenting with fashion and finding their vibe but Jesus Christ, does jack realise that throwing some clashing patterns on doesn’t count as ‘fashion’? And I’m sick of seeing influencers jumping on the thrifting bandwagon, it makes it more expensive for people that are doing it for the right reasons

Also, can’t believe he’s got the nerve to do an ad with Experian and lecture people about credit scores when he hasn’t had any financial hardship in his life and can afford to live in central London while he’s unemployed

what has jade done? i'm a little behind on her thread, sorry!!
She's been traveling all over the place, breaking COVID restrictions in multiple countries. She's now is in quarantine in South Korea after arriving only a few days ago. She's claiming that she has to be in SK for Minerva, otherwise the time difference is too difficult to manage. Many people are now calling her out in the comments sections of her videos for traveling during a pandemic, and she's been deleting as many negative comments as she can.

He's been very quiet about his applications this time around, which does make me wonder if he only applied to Oxford. I wouldn't put it past him to put all of his eggs in one basket again and assume that his persistence will pay off.

Imagine the admissions officers noticing his name and sighing, "it's his third time applying now! What a sweet, driven, persistent boy. We just have to let him in this time". Like yeah, no, that's not how it works.

I think it’s terrible he’s dragged holly Gabriel (is that here name?) she’s got a lot of mental health issues and doesn’t seem to have many if any friends, the fact he then drags her into his mess, just avoid the question, he’s more a wanna be social climber than he let’s on, the fact he can happily slag her off (that’s inadvertently what he’s done) but be friend with touchdalight tells you all you need to know about jack. And the fact he let slip that he’s got no friends left from 6th form too! Twat
What I find most ridiculous about it, is that on Twitter he defended not explaining the name drop by saying he had cut out footage explaining why he didn't gel with her, apparently he felt it came off wrong... how about you edit out her name completely Jack?!

tbh I dont think the state school thing is that big a deal these days anyway. Coming from deprived areas are the issue, the state school stigma alone went out the window 20 years ago really. Tony Blair changed that by getting more people to uni.

And also you dont need tiktok to see in private schools....social media has been around for years. plus documentaries on TV. everyone has seen the kind of things that go on. How sheltered or ignorant is he?!

Lastly what awful customer service. while technically he isnt wrong, he isnt doing his pr any good. And he isnt addressing the second persons issue at all.

The money should 100% go to charity. Even if he couldn’t turn down payment, the decent thing to do is admit he’s being paid and then explain it’ll be going to charity rather than into his pocket

Tbh something I do really like about Jack is that he reads such a variety of books, I genuinely enjoyed his book gifting video with his girlf in his second channel & also that he is unashamedly himself - even if he is bi, I kinda like that he hasn’t felt the need to make a big deal out of it
