Didn’t he get A*A*A*? If his grades were lowered by one grade then he would have still got to Durham with AAA. Using a shit situation for many students to complain about his top grades is pretty low for Jack View attachment 208427

and if he had had a proper job with any sort of responsibility he might have some understanding of what a difficult job schools, colleges, awarding bodies etc have had over the last 6 months. Yes its a very unfortunate mistake that needs to be rectified but if he thinks all these people/organisations just view statistics and dont realise they impact peoples lives then he is very out of touch and has no comprehension of what goes on.

also he would have likely got in to his universities of choice. Universities have been accepting lower grades and been desperate for students for over 5 years. I say this with some inside knowledge too

Yeah the whole main character thing is about putting yourself and your needs and happiness first. I think it started as kind of reclaiming yourself after toxic friendships/relationships and things like that but I do agree that it's crossed over into narcissism a little bit. For me it's more about relying on myself and being happy on my own, and anyone or anything in my life adding more to my whole self rather than the idea of people and things "completing" me. Hope that makes sense lmao

It's one of these zillennial things born from tiktok, kind of like the "Heather" trend too, about being the person everyone wants to be or wants to be with.

If you're mortgage or rent free you're not really 'living on your own'. I live on my own and it would be a million times easier if there was no rent to pay. He again is privileged and tone deaf

And even when he moves out, I know there are companies that offer free or incredibly discounted accommodation in their flat blocks to influencers just to have their properties shown on camera. It's incredibly unfair.

Thank you for correcting me! It really annoys me when people do this because, to me, it makes their channel much less personal? Like it’s sad because obviously Jack loves reading and I’d like to think he has made this second channel to share that. But all these celebrity challenges and challenges based off trends like you say is just one big opportunity to cash in on fanbases. I wouldn’t mind if they were sprinkled in between normal reading vlogs and stuff he was passionate about but from my knowledge, these trendy ones are all he’s done of recent. Just seems more fake to me :/

Its all about clickbait and key words to fit in with algorithms. And when that happens authenticity tends to go out the window

PhDs mean little in the workplace, degrees and masters are meaning less (especially academic rather than industry focused degress), employers want useful skills not just academic theory. Like you say the university name means very little, I'm surprised how many job applications and recruitment websites I've signed up to that dont ask for degree classification...just that you have one. The other issue with phds is finding a university that is able to support your particular research proposal.

Universities were in trouble and making cuts long before covid but with covid and brexit on the horizon it's going to get much worse before it gets better. In fact it may never go back to the old days again.

Just to say a lot of universities are forcing older academics out, and many look for new academics to have masters and possibly phds but also practical industry experience. Jack would be a hopeless academic really as he has no real world experience and thats the direction many unis are heading.

I honestly dont think Jack is hugely employable as it stands.

Ye, this isn't middle school. You're allowed a nuanced take on stuff. Id be really uncomfortable if my boyfriend hung out loads with someone who publicly kept saying they fancied him, and Id expect him to respect that and tone down their friendship.

Yeah I don't know how I would feel in this situation because something similar happened to me and my friend, but at the time we were both single and we just put the one-sided crush behind us and kept a strong friendship, but I don't know how this would have gone if he had been in a relationship! I would totally understand his hypothetical girlfriend being bothered by us remaining close, and I wouldn't have told him my feelings in the first place! So yeah, it's mainly her making it so public that's a little strange!

I didn't know Ibz that much so I didn't know half of those achievements! I didn't follow him a lot, and after finishing Cambridge and applying for a GDL I thought he switched careers, just like Astrid Franciszka (she studied English Lit at Cambridge and now wants to pursue a career as a solicitor), but it definitely looks like he's into education and into helping those with less resources to achieve their goals, just like Vee Kavithu, as you mentioned.

Different levels of study = completely different courses which are looking for completely different things in the application process though.

Even then he has been rejected twice and he still hasn't changed his attitude towards it at all. He hasn't accepted either of those rejections. I feel like Ibzmo really realised why he was rejected and reflected on that.

I've just had a quick look at the pages that are on amazon and on one page he states that nothing you do on an open day, short of killing someone, will impact you getting into uni. That's not strictly true, I've known many a student immediately hit the black list due to their attitudes on the day, also at the opposite extreme, showing interest and great behaviour can improve suddenly put you on an admissions tutors good list even if your grades arent amazing. Yes universities are desperate for students but they wont just take anyone, especially if there are early signs they could be a problem.

So while applicants shouldnt worry too much or overthink it, their behaviour can be remembered for good and bad

In a lot of ways I'm very similar to Jack - I'm the same age, took my A Levels at the same time, went to uni at the same time, graduated at the same time. I come from a middle-class family and went to an all-girls grammar school and while I'm not 1st gen my mum only went to university because it was free to do nursing at the time. That's the reason I used to watch him, I thought watching people the same age as me navigate the same things in life was pretty cool, but I find him completely insufferable these days. Studytubers all have such a weird and unhealthy attitude to success and benefit so much from their upbringings and capitalism but none of them ever want to actually admit it. The amount of value they all place on Russell Group universities is ridiculous, when I went to MMU and had a great time and great education there and am returning in September because of how much I loved it. I just think their attitudes stink a lot of the time. They go on about inequality and disparity and voting Labour on their socials but it's entirely performative because they're the ones who benefit from the shitty system we live in the most. Especially Jack, with his pushing that he's 1st gen, and how quirky he is for drinking Strongbow out of a mug, it just reminds me of all the freshers in Manchester who pretend they're lower class when they're really not. Goes back to the whole classy when you're rich but trashy when you're poor thing.

I think studytubers in general also seriously romanticise burning yourself out and pulling all-nighters and just promote a really unhealthy lifestyle at university. It doesn't need to be like that and they need to stop pushing this "if you're not spending 24 hours in the library you're not successful" crap.
