Where is this on? YT/ Twitter?
It's on Youtube under his latest book bragging.
The latest exchange is one of his fan girls telling me that she doesn't care if he is being deceptive about what he's read, everyone watches him because of his 'personality'. I find that difficult to believe. He has the personality of a roofing tile.

Or a sock puppet, just pops up with an irritating voice to annoy you with not much depth

watched his latest video, Jesus this twit loves the sound of this own voice. what even are these 'reviews' that he's doing, he just waffles on about crap. no wonder Oxford rejected him, can you imagine the mess of his personal statement.

also, his voice when he reads quotes kill me, petty I know lol
I played a video for my mum last night and her reaction was 'who does he think he is? And why does he do this 🤌 when he talks?'

Sums it up well, I thought 😂

Your mum is spot on! (y)Jack is a pretentious ego-driven layabout who is so wrong brained (oops - I'll be accused of "ableism" again!) that he imagines that being gifted a load of books actually gives him an identity. It does, I suppose. The identity being "scrounger".

I was listening to this great podcast last night called "what should I read next?" which I'd highly recommend. The podcast host is so laidback and welcoming and recognises why we actually read books - and it is not a competitive sport. James Mustich (who wrote "1000 books to read before you die") was the guest. He talked about why he had written "1000 books" as a way to welcome readers into a book, and encourage them to see that an imposing book, eg "War and Peace", can be met on their own terms.

Meanwhile, in a different part of the forest: Jack opens a big box of books that he has acquired and no doubt will never read, in order to impress on everyone just how clever he actually is. (I'm still not buying it!)

I made it as far as the title of his new video.

"the 12 best books i read in 2021 (and i read 164)"

Why add "(and i read 164)" other than to brag (even though he didn't actually read them)?

Also why can't "YouTube's Resident Librarian" and supposed lover of language and literature use capital letters in his videos? Would putting an ounce of effort and care into something that you're earning money for betray the faux "my life is so chaotic gahhh no time for caps and punctuation" influencer persona?

Remember: this is the guy who couldn't work out how to buy a return fare on a train. Seriously.

It boils my blood when he refers to himself as "YouTube's Resident Librarian" - he seems to have no notion that to be a librarian one first needs a qualification. He doesn't even have a library card.

Hehas the mind of a (not very bright) child. Next he'll be calling himself a "spaceman" or a "pilot" and making "brrmmm-brmmmm" noises when he boards a plane. Anyway, I've annoyed him to the point he is now begging me to stop watching his videos. As if that's some sort of high I just can't live without.

That bugs me too. My friend is an archivist, and she would laugh in his face at his claims of librarianship. I didn't know a librarian = buying all the books?

This is a really good point, actually. I feel like people like Jack forget what a love of reading is all about. Titles like '...and of course I read them' are basically just pretentious boasts rather than sharing a love of reading.

I usually will only watch book themed videos if it's by a lesser known channel because they actually seem to love sharing their opinions and recommendations, instead of just chasing views.

“and of course I read them” - nothing like being defensive.

The reference to being a librarian is very arrogant and again pretentious. I don’t know what he thinks he is trying to achieve by portraying himself like this.

I think the quirkiness is all an act, but find it quite unusual that he has listed the top 12 books, rather than say 10 or 21 for 2021.

Does he expect people to be impressed that he is an English graduate? In the workplace (or at least where I’ve been), there are few references to qualifications once people have some experience.

Any channel recommendations? I'm sick of his random giggling like a girl in the middle of his sentences. Drives me up the wall.

What makes the “YouTube’s resident librarian” thing even weirder is that he isn’t even the most popular BookTuber.

It’s a bit like Jesy Nelson calling herself “Britain’s most successful female vocalist” when Adele is right there.

I wonder if he thinks he can get away with it because he entered booktube with a 'pre-made' audience.

I usually just look up book reviews and go from there. If I see someone with low views, I give it a watch. They're usually the people who are just excited to share their thoughts. I can't be doing with constant jump cuts and 'oooh I'm quirky' humour.

I don't know if scifi is your thing, but there's one called Media Death Cult where he does book hauls or reviews, but he's genuinely funny and just has a passion for the genre and for reading.

I like watching fictionalfates and uncarly (was watching them before I saw a collab between them and Jack but still I like their stuff haha) and itsdivya. Divya is chaotic graphic design book content that I live for.

That podcast sounds great! I've just searched for it on Spotify, is it the one with Anne Bogel?

You've pinpointed something I hate about studytubers here (and to an extent booktubers but I don't watch many of the big ones) in that they expect praise simply for owning or receiving something. They think that owning something is half the work rather than what they do with what they have. You can own all the books and study materials in the world, but that doesn't buy you a place in, ooh let's pick Oxford as a completely random example.

It is indeed! :giggle: I've just started listening to it, but I'm really enjoying it. I love that she started the first January episode saying that this year she wasn't going to set everyone a 'reading challenge' as life is challenging enough at the moment, and we need to remember that reading is meant to be a pleasure which gets us through the tough times.

Brilliant, thanks! Sounds like a podcast I might really enjoy

Does he still “live in Paris”?

The roof on his latest Instagram story looks very suburban Middle England.
