While I don't particularly like Jack (he's too try hard in most of his videos) I have to hand it to him that he's made a legitimate successful transition from studytube to booktube and probably done the best out of his generation of studytubers (eve, jade, ruby, iz etc) in keeping his audience. His audience and subscriber base definitely helped him get into booktube but in comparison to a lot of youtubers who start making videos about education/when they're in uni, he's adapted his content pretty well.
I agree. Jade went off the deep-end after doing Minerva content (as most of her viewers don't consider it a real university or a relatable experience), and Ruby's obsession with a variety of 'aesthetics' has left most of her original academic audience very bewildered.

Out of all the Oxford rejects, I think Jack is prob doing the best. Jade just completely turned 180 to a scam university she's convinced herself to be way better than Oxford, and Ruby Granger just hunkered down/ regressed to those weird childhood tendencies of hers.

So what do we think Jack is off to do now he's moving (perhaps out of London)? I never really got why he wasted money moving there in the first place, but hey ho.

I think he said he was moving to another country this year. I always thought his intention was the US, but I don't know where he'd be off to right now.

I'm new to this thread, but I am so relieved to see people share some of my opinions on Jack.
He seems nice enough but he mentions his degree way too much and it makes me cringe, as does that whole 'ooh I'm quirky, My life is a mess' humour. Maybe I'm just getting old. 😂

But yeah, he seems like a nice enough lad but there's something about him that irritates me and anyone I've spoken to about it can't believe I don't love him.

I went on a date with a guy once, and we were talking about books and he said 'I think the murder of his wife was a symbol for...' I said sometimes a story is just a story and he said 'oh no, I studied literature at uni so I understand this stuff more than you would.' That's who Jack reminds me of.

So the new video is a clever idea - reading the books he spots on the Underground, But I find the fawning over him in the comments funny. Some of them seem to think he is super amazing at literature criticism. One suggested he write a guide to literary criticism. To me he’s about on par with lots of other booktubers/bookstagrammers with and without Literature degrees. Intelligent but not amazing you know?

Does he definitely read the books or do you think he just looks up notes online? He doesn't really go in detail when he talks about the books and the books he holds are always in perfect condition. No creases on the spine or anything.

I think he dumbs down and simplifies a lot of his commentary on the books he reads for YT and his ~quirky~ persona (and also because his audience is pretty young still) but I do believe he reads most of the books he talks about. He doesn't offer that much insight to what he reads because I think he's probably embarrassed by using terms or the kind of language he did in his essays or discussions at uni (in which case don't start a booktube channel...). Not that I think he's struggling for money, but buying as many books as he does regularly, adds up when he could lie more easily (and cheaper) if he said he read them on an e-reader or something instead.

Although I do think a lot of people buy physical books just for the aesthetic (and he has also said he buys a lot of the books second hand), I agree and think he does read them. In the past he has sometimes used literary terms (can't think of one right now though lmao) and put the definitions on the screen and I feel like he realised that that comes across as kind of... pretentious (and doesn't fit his quirky online persona), so he stopped. Also, I don't think the format he is currently doing lends itself to a more academic ("essay-like") discussion. He's reviewing quite a few books within a relatively short video, if he talked in depth about each one, he'd pretty much have to make seperate videos for each book (and I don't see that doing well on a platform like youtube, so I get why he doesn't do it).

In his latest 'Jack in the books' video, he said he is moving to a non-English speaking country. Doesn't look like that's the US.

Jack is definitely better than Ruby and Jade. He is more relatable. He is honest about falling behind, messed up life and not having everything in order - things we can relate to. Definitely cant do that with Ruby and I haven't watched Jade's vids in a while.

I think he doesn’t go into a lot of details because he wants to keep his videos pretty short. I guess people are more likely to click on a 15-20 min long video than a 30+ min long one, and also probably more likely to watch the whole video.

To be fair, comparing to Jade and Ruby is setting a very low bar for Jack 😅

Hmm, it looks like he's moved back home for a bit, maybe until he goes off to whenever he's heading.
