jack is like ruby in the sense that they both put aesthetics over content and it's just so embarrassing. used to love his videos back in 2019/early 2020 but ever since he moved to London (and now PARIS of course) he's become so unbelievably annoying. I can't even bring myself to click on his videos anymore because the last ones I watched were basically all the same...

I was surprised he described one of the books as "dogshit" as well. If I was the author watching this video I'd be super shocked for my book to be called names like that to his 900k subs. Is this how they taught him to critique books at Durham? If you're trying to make a video defending the romance genre and dislike most of the books then that's a bit awkward. I am not a fan of this genre myself, but I wouldn't call a book dogshit. Many other people might love this book, and are looking for something else in books than he is. Why say that those peoples taste is basically dogshit?

Again in the Women's Prize for Fiction book video - he has to have everything rehearsed otherwise it looks visibly awkward. It was clear this was a first impression. All the covers looked fine to me. I quite liked the window one, it was atmospheric and it fit the blub well. But he criticised the cover so much, as if he isn't going to read it because he doesn't like the cover lol.

I don't think he lies about how much he reads. However I think he skim reads to get through things quickly and that's why he isn't able to form any vaguely complex thoughts on the books.

If it's one of your primary hobbies it's really not that tricky to read 100 books a year. Say you read 100 pages a day, about a page a minute, that's about 1.5-2 hours, so read on your lunch break and before you go to sleep. An average book length of 365 pages will give you 100 books. It doesn't seem ridiculous, and that's before you might add in something like audio books on your commute.

I think the problem comes from not giving yourself the breathing space and time to think about the book. He may read the words on the page and then just move on to the next rather than thinking about his opinions and the reasons behind them. It's fine to do that it you're a casual reader, but making a career off of it you need to be able to form those opinions.

It's always Twitter they (Influencers) delete/don't use because it's the one that they have least control over the replies/comments etc compared to other platforms.

Also what avid reader doesn’t know the word “dog-eared” when talking about the folded edges of a page!?!!

Ironically that video may prove it more that he doesn't read them , he should have just not said anything lol

Honestly it would've even been fine to make a video about "7 books from 7 countries" or something like that, just without the "they are not originally in English and NOBODY ever reads translated fiction so i am super unique and literary" part of it all. He could've just said that books from non-English speaking countries don't get enough hype in the UK (or in English-speaking online spaces like booktube and booktok), so he wanted to specifically make a video about them. Could've made the same points about translation and cultural differences without stroking his ego so much. He probably would've found a way to make that all about him too but in theory, I like the idea of him showcasing books from different countries (well someone in that English-speaking booktube space with an audience as large as his showcasing them, maybe not Jack specifically lol)

I wonder when the wave of his little stans waking up (and by that I really mean turning 17/18/19) and realising he's really fucking cringey is going to happen.

I might be mistaken, but I feel like a lot of people in the studytuber threads used to (long long ago) watch and actually enjoy these youtubers. But I think there's always a turning point where the audience finally grows up and starts to experience life as an adult, and realises that this people are pretty awful role models to have.

His dipping into the booktube world and doing everything in this insincere gimmicky way (without even bothering to read the books) makes me think that yes, he may have renewed his channel with a little life and given it some more viewers, but I'm sure they'll start waking up to the fact that he's just another Peter Pan-esque studytuber who could never grow up.

Just watched the haul vid and got vaguely annoyed that he said he's writing about grief in his book (and is reading Notes on Grief by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to learn about grief). He makes it sound like (and from what he's shared) he's never really had to deal with grief, so it makes me feel like he won't be equipped to write about it. Not to say you can only write about things you've experienced but in my experience, people our age (I'm around Jack's age) don't know shit about grief and bereavement unless they've personally experienced losing someone close to them. Idk not trying to be too negative, he might do a great job but I've just had so many bad experiences with people being extremely insensitive around grief that I got a bit annoyed at that

I would be willing to put a month's wage on his book being absolutely terrible, so of course his attempts at writing about grief will be equally as awful.

I'm so tempted to apply just to see what the interview process is like. I don't have the relevant experience though, unfortunately (OT: when you've got all the necessary skills and qualifications, but need 3 years experience. like bitch we're in a pandemic, who do you think needs jobs? yeah, graduates. don't ask for 3 years experience for everything i beg)

The "we need 65 years of experience for this entry-level job, please provide references or certified proof from a reincarnation specialist that you did this job in a former life or byeeee" thing is a recruitment trend that's needed to be scrapped for a long time. I don't know how strict Sixteenth are about that though, looking at some of their "content executive/assistant" people, they had no real experience beyond maybe an internship here and there.

I imagine the interview process is: They leave you alone in a waiting room. A wallet has been left on a couch nearby containing £500 cash. Five minutes later, a manager will enter. If you mention to them that you found a wallet and return it with all the money inside, you have a sense of morality that isn't compatible with the Sixteenth ethos, and you'll be asked to leave immediately.

Sorry I'm not active on this thread at all but I just stumbled across his new video and needed to say this: Did he really say "People refer to me as the Charlie D'Amelio of booktube"??? 1) who says that and 2) Does he "officially" see himself as a booktuber rather than a studytuber now?

I'm also slightly annoyed at his attitude in the video, like how he acted so surprised when We were Liars was good (because if it was recommended on tiktok it can't be good?). Or him asking "where is the flavour" in They Both Die at the End? (also can I just mention I cringed at his "puns" and the way he spoke, like this man has an English degree from Durham, yet speaks like he's a 16 year old Tiktoker)

Idk, all of the books (except one which I haven't read) mean a lot to me and a lot of what he said seemed very surface level and dismissive.

Jack is probably the only "study-tuber" (apart from Eve Cornwell, sorry she's my babey) who I can stomach these days. A lot of the time his videos will just go on in the background whilst I'm working and I find them great to get new recommendations for books as I'm not as keen on reading as I once was. That being said, I'm not studying English literature and I'm not very exposed to that world (sorry, Law student here) so I imagine it's quite jarring to those who are.

I think it's fair enough for him to keep his gf private - he doesn't owe anyone an explanation of anything, and he keeps the majority of his private life private anyway which tbh I prefer over seeing Jade's younger sibling half naked on her bed or Ruby and Maaaarfa being absolute tosspots.

Jack might give you queer vibes (he does me) but it's up to him if and when he decides to come out whatever his sexuality is. He could keep it completely private for all he wants. Or he might just be straight but act camp, plenty of guys do but it's rude to just say oh it's obviously because he's gay he's broken up with his girlfriend. Maybe if he did come out you can be like oh that's not a surprise to me but wait til that happens rather than pressuring him.
