Interior Design Masters #2

I ALWAYS think this about the stuff. I call it all dust collectors. Fine in your own home but not in a hotel. Cushions like that freak me out in a hotel because you know they’ve not been cleaned like bedding. Just grim. And what was with all those books on the wall, stupid idea. Imagine the dust!
The book wall was hideous, can't actually believe they thought it was marvellous!

The Alice in Wonderland room was awful. The colours be the execution were woeful. Ideas beyond his ability

Noticed on the hotel website that the only room they have kept is the one with the AI prints of a King and Queen.

Which makes me wonder, do these businesses go into this programme with the expectation that the designs will be crap? Are they paid to take part? Is the intention that the rooms need updating so it doesn’t matter if some contestants have a play around because they will just get proper people in afterwards?

A hotel room needs to be comfy, practical and easy to clean. I want a big bed, a seating area to have a drink, somewhere to hide my case/bag and a bedside table that fits a bottle of water, a book and has a phone charging plug. I do not want papier mache or dried flowers.

Id be sneezing my head off with the dust!

I think the same of the beach huts this year too. I'm sure in previous series they had to consider storage of things like swimming equipment, floats and stuff. This year, apart from the underfloor one that wasn't really talked about either.
It's the practical elements that make a difference between decorating and design and they seem to be less important in this series so far.

I wonder if they are planning on refurbing anyway, are told that any damage will be put right and do it for the free publicity. The rooms they were doing up looked very dated and drab even for an old building.

I noticed in the beach huts most had deckchairs hanging on the inside of the chalet doors - but this was never mentioned or discussed. I found it quite odd. And no mention how to store the tables, chairs, table settings and sunshades all laid out outside. Some of them it would've been impossible. Funnily enough apart from the guy who got eliminated.

I get the concept of upcycling, better to fix something than throw it away, but was hurting my heart seeing them take some lovely old furniture and painting it in hideous colours.

I was screaming DUSTCATCHERS! at the programme throughout! No hotel I’ve ever stayed in, and I am lucky enough to have stayed in some very nice hotels), have had that kind of clutter.

And in my youth, I worked in hotels during the holiday from uni, thos rooms were not appropriate.

They also have a really weird understanding of the word ‘sustainable’

I’d love to know how many of these makeovers stay in place in the venues featured after the crew and designers have left. I’m guessing the the production company offers a payment for restoring them to their previous state if necessary.

Its a small thing but it's annoying me immensely - last week we had zebra print at the beach and a woman using slate as a homage to the beach(something usually associated with mountains) and this week we have a man doing a homage to medieval hunting with zebra skins. Yes, cos there were just loads of zebras running around Britain back then. Why are these people so clueless about the world. 🤔😐 Maid Marion also felt odd for the location. Alice in wonderland also a stretch as it wasn't something the hotel associated itself with.

The sustainablity schtick feels so inauthentic and arbitary 🙄

The furniture the castle already had was so beautiful it was painful to see it painted.

I do think ajeet is underrated. His rolling bench last time was clever, and I love that he researched the castle and brought in the octagons. I don't think his design completely worked but I like his thought process and how calm his designs are.

I agree with other posters that most of these rooms looked a nightmare to clean. 😬 I was thinking about that with that hideous leaf ceiling last week too - such a dust/spider magnet!

This show has often been about style over practicality though. Feeling like something produced for a one time showing than anything else.

Also like other posters was a bit surprised by who went this week. There were def worse choices imo

On the earlier series didn't the owners/managers of the places used to have more say in the decision? I might have that wrong.
These days it's just Michelle, with her often quite strange ideas of what 'works' (those open books glued to the wall 🤦‍♀️) and an expert.
Though I always like it when Laurence L-B appears. He's (imo) honest but generous in his appraisals.

Michelle has zero personality.
She reminds me so much of my old University professor that I get war flashbacks every so often when I watch the show.
The plastered on fake smile when she’s disappointed with a contestant is a big one.

I like that Ajeet had a different interpretation of romance that wasn't all pink n floral, it was "masculine" take without being too much.

Yeah, he's quietly getting on with the briefs really well I think, without being dramatic enough to get loads of (deserved) screentime. I liked how much he thought about the shape of the building too.

This was when IDM was at its best! I loved it and it’s a truer representation of interior designing isn’t it.
