Currently I earn £0. I’m a Medical student doing my second degree (first degree was in Psychology).

I used to have a part time job as a care assistant in a dementia specialised home. I can’t remember the pay but it was something like £8.50 an hour maybe? I only did that for a few months before I had to move for university.

I used to volunteer for childline, but of course no pay. Mostly I’m just excited to finish my degree and work, living off my parents makes me so depressed sometimes...

I think jobs - such as accountancy, high level exec assistants, HR and Law - are fantastic as at the junior level you can often move to a different industry as the skills are highly transferable.

I’m 27, live in the midlands and earn 30k a year working in higher education.

Before the pandemic my OH was a freelance photographer making around the same amount as me and now he’s working part time at a Covid test centre on £300 a week-ish.

I would say anyone who is business minded and is thinking of accountancy.. why not think of Treasury. The professional group of ACT - Google it. I am an accountant and then became a Treasurer. Best career move I ever made. If I had known about it earlier, I would have skipped the years of ACCA exams. And had gone straight to Treasury. Think about it. X

This sounds interesting! Can I ask how you got into treasury? And if you require any accounting qualifications/background to get into it?

Always find these threads interesting.
I am AAT Qualified and work for the family accountancy business. On £33k plus lots of benefits and bonus. Left school and trained and have been here for 12 years.
My one input into training to be an accountant. People think its easy, just number right? Well yes in effect it can be easy but there are so many 'Branches' to being an accountant. I have seen some amazingly qualified accounts (ICAEW) and quite frankly their practical skills are below par. I see some ACCA/CIMA who struggle with basic accounting. I am not qualified to that level, but I could give most of these guys a run for their money. I will admit my skills and knowledge are in Practice and will SME Businesses but my experience means I have been exposed to most accountancy/tax issues that the normal person/business face.
Accountancy is a huge array of skills and can get you a options for work, but I feel its not 'easy'.

Happy to help...
I was working in a firm that had an opening in treasury dept, and I went for it. From there I sat the treasury exams. I did get some exemptions due to being ACA qualified. I actually only sat the first stage of the exams, which are a stand alone qualification. By that time, I had enough of study! Would really recommend, if you don't mind working with banks. Reasonably well paid. Get lots of perks too, bank lunches and corporate hospitality etc. Eg. Centre Court Wimbledon.

I'm not the OP but prior to having children I was a senior PA (EA) working in central London at a large media firm. Basic salary was £50k.
I’m so conflicted. I’ve considered accountancy as my sister does it. She likes to tell me I’m too much of a “people person” and she’s the one suited to it.

I was a PA for a few years and would love to get back into it and struggle now as lost the experience. I work as civil servant so do have transferable skills. I’d love to to be a private PA for a HNWI or family x

As an accountant, I have to speak with banks and colleagues from all over the world. Favourite part of my job. Tell your sister that we do not sit in a darkened room with an abacus.....
