One of my friends cousins mum takes it to the extreme. She got her daughters bedroom electrically wired separately from the rest of the house (or something like that, can’t remember exactly what she said), and charges her daughter a separate electricity bill.

she won’t let her charge her phone in the family living room either and “use their electricity”, and makes her buy all her own food. I remember she used to charge her phone at college
That teaches some bad values or at least could imo, like a lack of communal sharing/living, being stingy with others, those are some odd values. It's one thing to have an adult child contribute but that's nuts.

I agree, there’s a clear difference between making your children pay their way and then just taking it too far. You’re doing more damage than good if you take it to the extreme. But thankfully the girl didn't turn out to be stingy etc and was actually seems really ambitious

personally for me (I understand if people feel different), I could never make my children pay to stay at the family home. It feels really cold and ‘transactional’ for me, I want them to feel welcome and comfortable and not feel like they’re only there because they’re paying me, or they’re a “lodger”

If you can afford it I agree. But I do understand the other pov. But I hope I can help any kid of mine the way I've been helped or else it seems hypocritical

They aren't children though, they're working adults that have to pay their way through life.

I don’t know why anyone cares whether other people charge adult children or not- I don’t.
Although think there is a ‘lemon sucking’ type who judge those who don’t as if their children will then have no idea about money or saving. Which is rubbish- as proved by me.

I think you could argue that as long as they're productive about it is fine, ie. increasing their savings rate for a house.

My mum was incredibly strict about charging rent and banged on about it teaching me life lessons. I have always been useless with money and wonder if I would have been better had I been allowed to save while living at home. Who knows? It’s probably down to genes and character type.

How was she with money? My dad was very strict, my mum more flippant with rules lol. I got my Dads work ethic but my mums spending habits 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

I work 22.5 hours a week for the nhs in an admin role. I take home about 1200 a month but then I also have a side hustle which I do 2 x evenings a week which bumps me up to about 2000 which I’m comfortable on

I'm in the Railway sector - the same job as those in the railway already mentioned but the lowest grade, I'm on about £31k including shift allowances and OT.

I absolutely love my job, it's also the highest paid job I've ever had. I previously worked in marketing and engineering, with no chance of progression within my company. Being made redundant in 2020 has been very fortunate for me, I know I'm so very lucky to have the job I have now. Much prefer shift work to office 9-5 hours.

Are you going to be going on strike with some of us though!? That is something I'm not looking forward to 😖
