I've just found this thread, I'm shocked / amazed at how much people donate. Many people say they won't give to large charities because it just pays the CEO and nothing of benefit is done but willingly hand over very large sums to essentially anyone.
Have people listened to the Scamanda podcast? In a nutshell she faked cancer and raised an undefined amount of money. It was in the US and she was charged and subsequently jailed, but they could only charge her with "Wire Fraud" which was money donated via her website using a credit card. That totalled just over US$100,000. The money, gift cards, goods etc were not included. I know technically not GFM but demonstrates the extent of possible fraud.
