I came to post this. It is really upsetting that a prize specifically created because of the under-representation of women now has a man as a nominee. Best we can hope is that they are a one trick pony and never get nominated again. It's a sad day

I must say the book does sound interesting but I'm so so confused on how a debut novel has made into this. I'm sure it happens but I'm also guessing it's books we would have all heard about that did extremely well, had movies made after them and all that - don't particularly keep up with literary prizes.
That being said, it doesn't seem to be a 'debut' novel at all as the person does have two other novels they presumably released before transitioning. Also seems that the book is being made into a TV series. Dare I say this lowkey seems like people jumping on a book because it's premise is around detransitioning, being trans and having a child through an 'unconventional way' rather than because it's a genuinely good book

I think it was a few years ago when the Women's Prize also had a non-binary author on the longlist. If you don't identify with a particular gender, then why on earth are you submitting your work to the WOMEN'S prize!

Because a lot of people nowadays don't see women as women, they see women as meaning 'not men'.

Being French I would like to ask you ladies something, is the uk overall more progressive? An acquaintance from uni shared a story about an 8 year old mtf who was denied a name change by the state and the parents are calling it transphobic... When you look at the comments most agree it's nuts. Then I see what's going on in the UK and I just wonder what the deal is with your government? hope this isn't offensive

Tbh I have no idea if we are, we seem to be hit and miss at the moment. .

I would advise looking up Dom Armstrong of the Green Party on Facebook. He resigned from the Green Party due to concerns about trans extremism

Did you see this in his resignation letter?

Perhaps even worse than this, when a motion to have women’s sex-based rights recognised (the day before International Women's Day) was put forward, again the Green Party leadership were horrified, how could women dare ask for safe spaces in prisons, or ask for a fair chance in sport? The LGBTIQ+ group declared that there was no historical evidence that women had been oppressed on the basis of their sex. Women are oppressed because they ‘look like women.’ To say otherwise was declared oppressive to trans people, a hate motion, which deserved to be righteously overcome.

Honestly I think it depends on where you are. Cities and larger towns with large student populations tend to be worst places.

I wouldn’t say we’re progressive where I live (northern coastal town with a 98%white population)there’s a lot of retirees who live here so views are generally more traditional and conservative.
There’s the odd few kool aid drinking woke individuals but for the most part they’re the minority. They don’t stamp their feet and demand this,that and the other. We’re also not a proper university town. There’s one small campus but it doesn’t offer anything remarkable for people to make a beeline for it. It’s mainly locals and mature students. They offer a flexible learning arrangement and it seems an odd set up imo.

(There used to be a campus for different university that did offer specific and specialist courses but this closed about 6/7 years ago.)

So it’s not like some bigger towns/city’s with a large student population kicking up a stink or anything.

I don't know how I would describe it here tbh. I live in Scotland and recently there was this uproar that the Scottish government were allegedly trying to pass conversion therapy for trans people in a bill because it stated that it was legal to 'encourage them to change their identity' and all the trans people and some of their LGB allies freaked out and started leaving the party. Nicola Sturgeon had to make a whole video addressing it. One outspoken (les) gender critical MP was fired and received threats of corrective grape, which someone was later arrested over.

Then there's the fact we (as in the UK) are nicknamed 'TERF island' lol.

And one particular trans acquaintance is always on twitter talking about how he wants asylum status to go to New Zealand to flee transphobia in the UK. This person is a 30+ year old man who is financially supported by his parents but also they seem to support him in his transition as well. The only danger he's in is from his fragile mental health.

As a les though, I really have no complaints about living here. For a while, I moved to a small island that was/still is a lot more socially conservative. Literally only one tiny gay bar on the whole west coast of the island and it was really just for men. So yeah, I think there's worst places to be personally.

Last but not least, the last I heard the PM isn't interested in going through with self-ID so there's that.

Transwomen centring themselves in this issue and attack on women is quite frankly pissing me off. Yes, they will experience transphobia and violence but it is separate from the violence that women face every single day. Why can't they see or acknowledge that? Because they have grown up with male priviledge whether they like it or not. And they have a greater physical advantage should an attack occur. If you want to be a women, at least start with being an ally.
