I'm from the JM thread and have been browsing since the Keira Bell announcement a few days ago.

For me, I think there are genuine trans people for whom transitioning is the best option for them to lead a happy life. I want these people to have equal rights and to be supported. However, what we don't want is people who are merely non-conforming to gender stereotypes to end up going through this difficult medical journey if it's ultimately not the right thing. I also don't think it's helpful for people for whom transition is right to have the waiting lists blocked up by people for whom it's not right. I don't think it's helpful either for trans people, if in 5-10 years there's a spate of detransitions. That's just a gift to the right-wing and the anti-LGBT+ lobby.

Similarly, it's not good for trans people when people like JM jump on the 'I'm trans' bandwagon for 6 months.

I find the Susie Green story interesting. I wonder how their child would have grown up if the parents hadn't freaked out about the toys. It feels like to me that by the age of 2/3 their child learned from them that that they couldn't be a boy and be themselves. I wonder what would have happened if the parents had just been normal about it.

I know Mermaids now say that toy choices are not indicative of gender, but then Susie's entire story is founded on toy choices.
Hello and welcome!

The JM non binary and then transitioning to a man (but didn't in the end) wrecked my head. Especially as she was playing the victim because her les partner was 'unsupportive' ("I like girls"). The usual gaslighting of lesbians!

I feel like it's because no one has any issue with intersex people so they latch on to them and use them as their trojan horse

Like how TRAs passed self-id in Ireland whilst everyone was distracted with the marriage equality referendum
Plenty of people do have a problem with intersex people if they look different. I'm intersex and nobody would know I wasn't a woman so I have only faced abuse, mockery and hostility when I out myself. But other people who display their mixed characteristics as part of their intersex condition do face abuse and stigma just for existing, and all of us intersex people face a lot of medical mistreatment. It is always baffling to me that so many trans people are so keen to be intersex when it is a pretty crappy way to be born and live.

I'm sorry I spoke out of ignorance there, of course I don't know how intersex people are treated in society. I'm sorry for that, and so grateful that we have you to bring that perspective to these threads. ❤ It sucks that you get that kind of ignorant reaction, and the that other intersex people get that kind of reception too. That's completely unacceptable 😠

Thank you. It's fine. There aren't very many of us intersex people around to share our experiences. It seems like a myth that we have it easy and so often trans people want to claim they are intersex when they're not (although you absolutely can be both) but many of us get prickly about it because we have a very different view of how green the grass is on our side of the fence.

GenderGP must be stopped. Disaster waiting to happen.

I wonder if after January the 1st that will be affected by Britain’s exit from the EU? Although i did notice it said the EEA so I don’t know whether that makes a difference, or if it will make a difference if some sort of deal is reached.

Realistically though, if it’s legal to do so from where they currently live and it’s also legal to send drugs (or other things) via the loophole they are currently using, can they actually be stopped? Are they actually doing anything wrong (I don’t mean morally, just legally)? I would certainly hope that if another person died and it was proven it was a direct reaction to the drugs they gave that the government would force Spain to extradite them and charge them with manslaughter.

Imagine being so arrogant that you’d ignore the outcome of a high judge court case. I wonder what would happen if someone, using the same loophole, in European countries if the drinking age was 16, sold alcohol to 16 and 17 year old teens in the UK?

I don’t think it ever gets argumentative here. It used to but not for the last few months
Oh yes! I meant in other threads when these discussions arise it gets tense quickly.

I think the comparison of displaying and using personal pronouns to a date grape drug is really quite disgusting.
It's not an analogy I would make personally, but the article does make some interesting points I think.

I use people's preferred pronouns to make them comfortable. But given I biologically believe we are the sex we are born with its not necessarily a pronoun I agree with. I am agreeing to their definition of what it means to be a man or a woman to make them feel comfortable and safe in society. Would they ever do the same to me? If I asked them not to call me a cisgendered heterosexual afab, and instead just a woman? Probably not. I have an old friend who identifies as Queer and is very engaged in LGBTQIA+ stuff and got very upset with me when I asked her to stop describing me as cis-gendered.

I mean, it's an extreme analogy for sure but the article makes some great points. What did you think of the points raised? Personally I have seen far more other things in gender ideology that are "quite disgusting".

I'm someone who was drugged by a predator for violent purposes, and so had a really strong gut reaction to the headline and didn't read it. Seeing other comments here I just honoured my commitment to explore ideas that make me uncomfortable and read the article. I found it interesting and thought provoking. There are lots of very good articles on the site and I'll be reading more.

Does it bother anyone else that anyone that mentions gender on other threads, even if it’s relevant to the discussion, gets shut down by other posters and told to come to this thread? Like, almost everything else is ok to discuss when it comes to celebs and influencers, but gender is where people draw the line? I’m not saying it should be brought up often, but when it comes up naturally it gets shut down right away. It’s like people are scared of discussing it.

I’m grateful to have this thread btw, I think it’s fab.

I think that they mainly revolved around the idea that trans women are people that we should be fearful of, which I don't believe to be true.

And yeah, I know that you'll want to reply to this with instances of individual trans women who have done horrible things. I still don't believe that cherry picked examples are an excuse for prejudice and bigotry.

I'm neither prejudiced nor a bigot but I can see gender ideology for the dangerous, sexist, regressive and homophobic movement that it is. It is also dangerous to trans people. The extremists, of which there are many, but I'm certainly not going to reply with "cherry picked" examples when we've been discussing it for 3 threads are ruining it for decent trans people. Kids are potentially in danger too but thankfully three judges ruled that kids need to be protected. To be clear, this was never about the rare people who experience actual gender dysphoria.

haven't read the article yet, but what exactly are you saying is prejudice and bigotry? is it in the article or something specific to this thread that someone said?

Considering I’ve been a victim of that this week, yes. It’s very tedious.

It’s just virtue signalling though. That’s why some posters are so quick to shut it down, even if it’s relevant to a thread. It’s the only form of thread policing that’s allowed.

“Get your filthy opinions out of this thread and go to the Gender thread with all the TERFs” 🙃

"Pronouns are like Rohypnol. They dull your defences. They change your inhibitions. They’re meant to."
This suggests that trans women are men. And it goes further than that - it's saying that trans women are men posing as women in order to harm them. That's prejudice and bigotry.

I read that with an open mind thinking there was going to be a really good analogy behind it but apart from the initial provocativeness of seeing the word, I don’t really understand the link between the two even though I 100% agree with not using pronouns.

I’m a bit of both, because I found it really annoying when the celeb gossip thread (was that the one you mean?) turned into the royals thread because it’s not something I want to read about and was glad when people told them to go away to the royals thread so it would be hypocritical on my part if I didn’t feel the same if a topic unrelated took over the same thread but one I had an interest in. But that poster saying “please don’t deadname him, it’s very disrespectful” on the celeb GOSSIP thread? And the same poster frequents the JM thread where she gets called worse things on a daily basis!? GTFO! There were a lot of people agreeing with the GC comments even if they didn’t want to enter the topic of conversation themselves, going by the positive reactions

I think that’s a very far leap. Pronouns aren’t trans women, or human beings. They’re words.

This is a good Twitter thread:

Well to be fair I don't believe trans identified people are women. I believe in sex and not gender. I am not the same sex as someone who identifies as female. If I identify as a man, I am not the same sex as a man.
