I just saw this on IG.... wtf.

Sorry if this was mentioned already but has anyone seen the Queen's Gambit? One of the "female" teachers in the first episode is so blatantly obviously trans. They look very large and manly and when I looked down at my phone for a sec I thought it was a man speaking when it was them. It's so distracting! And they think we can't tell unless we know what's in their pants 🙄
Mm. I was going to watch that but reading that put me off it.

Just so this account on IG of a trans woman who is OBV trying her best to live life as a woman. People like this, I have no problem with as she looks feminine and isn't a man with a beard wearing a dress. https://instagram.com/laurengsundstrom?igshid=16vimkc67r29w

She also shared a post which basically said trans people don't like when the phrase "womxn" etc is used. 👏

What is this obsession with lumping genuine intersex people with the 'non binary' crowd?

I feel like it's because no one has any issue with intersex people so they latch on to them and use them as their trojan horse

Like how TRAs passed self-id in Ireland whilst everyone was distracted with the marriage equality referendum

I broke my own advice and peeped at Twitter earlier - it’s not a nice place to be. :(. Logging off it again for a couple of days, properly this time.

I really do worry about trying to change the past. What about parents who raised a girl or boy, of course they don’t want to be mean and deadname their child, but are they never allowed to discuss with other people e.g close confidants about their memories of raising a daughter or a son? To deny they ever gave birth to a girl, for example? I can understand being supportive in the present and the future, but surely it should be a case of acknowledging there was one version of a past, and now there is a new chapter, a future, rather than gaslighting people into “correcting” the past? Like do you go as far as vilifying a grandparent for slipping up and saying “I have fond memories of taking my granddaughter to the park when she was a little child?” I ask because i used to have a colleague who changed his name to a religiously appropriate name when he changed religion. We were all told his new name and to start using it, but he didn’t have a go at us for slipping up and saying his old name, because some of us had worked with him years and it’s not an immediate thing to suddenly get right. Of course we all tried, out of respect, as colleagues. But can you expect a mother or father to always refer to their trans child as their preferred gender when you’ve spent years calling them something else? Do they get branded a TERF for slipping up?

I’m scared that where ever you go, there’s someone waiting to crush you for not being woke-compliant or up to speed with it all.
God I’m trying to get my head around this!

and like, sorry to be morbid...but when they die ( as of course we all will) is the first part of their life as a girl or boy going to be mentioned? What happens to old photos?

The trans actor in The Queen's Gambit is Rebecca Root, and I agree it was quite distracting. It would help if there were more / better roles out there for trans people as trans people. Root previously played the lead in a romcom about a transwoman and while it wasn't a good show for other reasons, it was about a trans person just trying to get on with life and being accepted for who they are

I remember reading a review of the recent revival of The L Word in which a transwoman reportedly played a natal woman, the writer found a sex scene which was played as if the character had a natural tina (which obviously they would not) very unconvincing/distracting. I wonder if anyone here watched that?

Same during the last series of Jessica Jones. Her secretary/assistant was so obviously a trans woman - tall, huge shoulders, deep voice. I guess it made no difference to the role (it was a very small part) but it still felt incongruous somehow.

@maytoseptember also wanted to say I was appalled by the treatment of you on the JM thread. I read it back after seeing the comment from another poster. Pages and pages of stuff that's irrelevant and going over the same stuff over and over again and you're told to go to the gender thread? Raging

IIRC the cast/crew said in an interview "the character is trans, it's just not stated in the show, in-story everyone accepts them". That's fair, although I can see why it'd stand out

I remember a while ago Laverne Cox was cast as co-lead in a TV pilot as a natal woman alongside Elizabeth Banks who's quite petite. It was ultimately not commissioned but I wonder what kind of reaction it would have got if there'd been a full series ...

I can’t see Ellen page making any real physical changes. She’s about five foot and seven stone, with very delicate feminine features and has got far on her beauty. I can’t see her growing a beard

counter that with why should 13 year olds not be allowed to duck/drink/do drugs that won't be as life altering as altering your body and making yourself infertile .
Seriously, they're well on their way to justifying paedophilia

This middle aged man keeps going on about 13 year olds "getting pregnant"

What the duck is he even saying? This is the most ducked up strawman argument ever.

Saying “trans people should love their bodies as they are” is the same as denying women contraception?

If a 13 year old trans kid should be denied “healthcare” then so should a pregnant 13 year old girl?

What the fuuuuuu.

i know he's right wing but he makes AMAZING POINTS! have a listen
I think Shapiro is awful. Truely an insane man (did you all see his weird obsession over the WAP song and how it wasn’t normal for a woman to have a WAP? Ben, it’s normal for women to get wet when aroused...)

But maybe the analogy about clocks being right twice a day applies here? I do find it tough that it’s only Conservative voices calling out the worst of the TRA stuff. It feels like liberals have become so concerned with being seen to be totally accepting of diversity and however people wish to identify and in the process are alienating anyone who might deviate from the group think when it comes to Trans issues. Identity politics makes me mad some days.

I'm internally struggling with the idea that I agree with Shapiro on something... He is awful. Really making me question if I am just being an intolerant mole with the trans stuff but only the right seem to make any sense on this 😕

I get you! But know that he also disagrees fundamentally with academics like Andrea Dvorkin and the GC critical women on Twitter. Because he’d rather enforce gender roles, and they’d rather get rid of them all together. The problem for lots in the GC movement is that many TRAs are engaging with outdated notions of gender roles wherein ones’ appearance or interests are somehow indicative of whether they are male or female.
