I think the idea is ridiculous, as surely its essential for the NHS to have a medical definition for a baby to define future medical care? And to me that medical defnition has to be either XX female, or XY male. or in those exceptionally rare cases, not easily defined?
But following this article to its logical conclusion, Who is it that is defining the gender of the newborn, is it parents or medical professionals? As surely those that support trans rights would find the idea of labelling a child, and recording a newborns gender as totally unethical? If they are saying that individuals can choose their gender as and when they are able to, then surely it is totally unfair for a hospital to choose a gender for a newborn?
if you want to get all woo woo about it, then surely the hospital should be recording the baby as gender neutral, gender to be decided by the child themselves when they are able to decide who they want to be?
And what happens if the parents would prefer a particular sex for the child? 30 odd years ago, I was pregnant and in a london hospital that refused to give me a birth sex for my babies, because allegedly some communities seemed to prefer male babies, and would perhaps abort females.
Could parents in these situations, decide to define the baby as male gender, whatever actual sex they are, and then register the birth as male?
It seems to me to be a recipe for chaos?
And as an aside, David Bowie and his first wife had a gender neutral child, Zowie. I was never entirely sure, or particularly worried, when I was younger whether Zowie was male or female. Heading forwards into adulthood, step forward, Duncan Jones, David Bowies oldest son. now a successful filmmaker. Labeliing him as gender neutral seems to have achieved precisely nothing! He is and was male!
