I hadn’t heard of the case until this programme so will be looking to watch the documentary too.

the angrer I felt watching about how rubbish the police were!
Those men and their families were failed.
I hadn't read or watched anything until I saw the TV show either. Shocking really.

I've been looking for a thread on this show - thought it was really good - I could barely stand to watch the police incompetence though. Agree the faked suicide note was ridiculous ("don't blame the guy I was with last night, he had nothing to do with it") and then that man's partner and parents being led to believe he might have killed another man!!

Just watched the doc follow up and good heavens, I can’t express how much rage and sadness I feel. How did the police not join the dots? How can they be so detached and lacking compassion?

What I am finding hard to get my head around is the fact that he can watch this in a sick voyeur way. I read up about him and he was caught having sex with Britain’s most prolific pedophile and also was discussing how Stephen Merchant should not be playing him as they look nothing alike.
Urgh, that's horrific. I think the tv show did a good job of focusing on the victims and their families and not the grizzly aspect but someone as sick as that will get a certain amount of gratification for the attention which is grim.

Good news and I really hope some heads will roll this time unlike last time when they all got promoted!
Absolutely. Hopefully even though it’s years later reallt hope something can come from it that the police are better trained to deal with things. Hopefully the family liaison officer apologies for the crap treatment tok.

What really stood out to me was how none of the police officers once said sorry to any of the victims families. It wasn't until the serious crime unit took over that condolences were offered.
I noticed this too. Basic human empathy.

That was really sad .... as was Jack's parents finding out he was bi-curious which was why he had gone to meet Port also.... :(

Did anyone watch the actual documentary on Iplayer - it had the families on and also Port neighbour and Gabriel's flat mate....
No. I might give it a watch at some point

I haven’t but I will. I thought the neighbour and Gabriel’s flat mate were played so well by the actors.

Yes I just watched the actual documentary tonight. It said the Police used the excuse about the cost when the families asked for more to be done. I’m disgusted none of the Police involved were even disciplined 😡

same.... they were lazy and really gave off the couldn't be bothered vibe.....

I can't believe some went on to be promoted.... I don't think off the back of this case - at
least I bloody hope they weren't because their actions were disgraceful.... !!

Watched all of this and it was heartbreaking. One question though that confused me and I’m not sure if I missed something - how did Daniel Whitworth meet Stephen? Was it on grindr, and how did his dating profile say single? That’s the part that I can’t find anything on
Obviously his longterm boyfriend didn’t know he was on the dating websites so he would have said ‘single’ or why be on dating apps? I felt sorry for his boyfriend but he didn’t appear in the documentary and was only mentioned briefly by Daniel’s stepmum when she showed a birthday card from ‘the boys’.

I don’t know which app he used but you saw him on his phone so I think he definitely met him via the dating sites.

In the documentary she shows a room in her house where she has all his stuff that the Police took and then kept for ages. When she got it back a lot of it was mouldy.
I know I saw that too - all 4 families were let down so badly - the police involved should be absolutely ashamed of themselves... if Jack's sisters didn't push it he could of carried on his depraved and disgusting behaviour.....

Something else that was off, with the first killing when Port reported finding the body he said to the guy on the phone he was driving away so couldn't remember the flat number etc. But then he says he discovered the body outside his flat and went on in to sleep.
Yep, he didn't think that one through. Though he did get charged for perverting the course of justice for that.

Oh I understand - what I meant was I wasn’t sure if it was a fake profile set up by Stephen or it’d been altered in any way, I agree I feel bad for the boyfriend. I hope my comment didn’t come across as insensitive I was genuinely just not sure
No not at all. I think it’s because Stephen pretended Daniel and Gabriel knew each other as a way of blaming Daniel for Gabriel’s death but they weren’t known to one another. He had obviously met Daniel on one of the dating apps same as the other victims.

Do we know how port met Daniel whitworth? Was he cheating on his partner? Was he an escort? So sad.
