there is still a rivalry between those two, so to get the Merc deal and the ambassador role Lewis didnโt get and the challenge to showcase that he can drive the tractor of a car (and the lot less promo Merc expects from their driver) could be a reason for him

i honestly donโt know if max thinks about lewis that much. or vice versa. certainly not enough to take on a role he wouldnโt enjoy to try and prove himself over lewis (he doesnโt really need to at this point). if max does leave red bull then i canโt see he goes to merc in their current state. for one thing, it would kill georgeโs heart and soul and general emotional well-being.
