Not being nasty, or anything, but what are weight limits on horses? i noticed she sits really far back... most school lessons at riding centres say 13stone, so was just intrigued to see what the weight limit is for horses? Or is particular breeds better for it? i noticed blog of a cob too and she jumps and the way she comes back down. just really interested in whats allowed and if if damages the horses in the long term?
not large shaming or anything in the slightest i'm just really interested how it works with bigger riders
me personally, I think there should be a weight limit of 13stone because tack and your riding hat/boots etc adds another 2 stone.
There are lots of things to factor in, like age and fitness of the individual horse. A bigger horse won’t necessarily be stronger if it is young and or unfit. Same as a
large horse won’t actually be stronger because it has
large and not muscle and then has to carry its own
large aswell as the weight of the rider.
then there is the work expected of the horse. If just going for a short, quiet hack then a smaller horse may be ok, but if going for a days hunting or you want to be jumping courses out showjumping or eventing, a bigger and fitter horse may be needed. Older horses may be weaker and not able to carry bigger people.
plus there is the level of rider. A bigger rider that is balanced in the saddle could be less strenuous on the horse than a smaller but novice rider.
it’s a topic that always divides the equestrian community. I’m not
large shaming at all, I myself gained a lot of weight in 2020 and have been losing it this year and aiming to get back in the saddle when I’m around the 12st mark. I’m tall at 5’10 and understand that I need to watch my weight if I want to ride.
