She hasn’t said she’s not ridden AT ALL, she’s said she’s hardly ridden… a horse doesn’t lose fitness overnight
You would do minimal training on the lead up to a marathon.. you wouldn’t go ham straight before
I just feel this page is full of backseat riders who don’t actually do anything but chat shit
You're not wrong, but you're also not right...
If you take a look at quite a few research studies about injuries in sport horses, the leading cause of sesamoid stress fractures and tendon injuries, is due to over doing gallop sets and strenuous heavy work (typically over conditioning). So of course leading up to an event you wouldn't be doing excessive conditioning 6 days a week.
BUT, it has been shown in a multitude of young horse studies (there are hardly any on older horses unless we're talking arthritis); that merely pulling a horse out of the pasture or stall with a low level of fitness, means injuries are just as common! In fact, it increases the chances of EIPH (exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhaging), increases chances for over heating as the horse has no acclimated to the hotter weather with exercise, and increases the risk of a tendon injury (like the beginning of a tear that will fester, or a bowed tendon).
Having a properly formed conditioning plan is a necessity to prevent injury. And it doesn't sound like that's what she's doing.
By the tone of her story and her own words, she's just done the bare minimum with virtually no prep or proper conditioning...that's definitely not in the best interest for her horse to remain injury free. So yeah, it's not a smart move on her part, especially if she wants to do right by her horse
