Driving - Anxiety

😐 I'll do my usual monthly drive again on Thursday and for some reason I obsess again over the parking, or more specifically, leaving portion. I'm crap at it. It's not even a horrible street or anything, but I simply can't grasp how to get out of it. The lady I go to for my appointment nearly always comes out of the shop again to help me and it's so embarrassing. I've found this video and while the situation isn't identical, I hope I can remember (and correctly reverse) the instructions. I'm not the best with left/right and even though I always rent the same type of car, I don't have a good sense of the dimensions.
Reverse in, then getting out is easy, also it’s easier to reverse into what you can see, than out into what you can’t

Not allowed there, unfortunately, I've had the same idea.... and while I think I could mess that up as well, it would indeed be easier.

This is where parking sensors are a godsend because sometimes you can think you're a lot closer to a car than you actually are.

My brother's got a rear view camera that kicks in as soon as he puts the car into reverse and shows the video in the radio screen. I wish I had one of those, too. 😂

The car I typically get has the sensors and even the camera thing, it shows you where the car will drive along with some lines. It's quite useful, but I still struggle, as my sense of space is close to non-existant. It'd probably be better if I could practice more often, but as I only get a car once a month and am not really inclined to hire a car to practice (and potentially damage something then) I'll probably never get better,

Drive was okay! Lady didn't need to help me reverse out either. Ok, I got a bit lucky as the parking wasn't as crammed as usual there, but I'll take that. I probably also could have done the turn in 2 points and not 4, as I was super-cautious, but I'll take the small wins. just this morning a friend had phoned me that she had reversed into something with a hire car and has a mighty crack down the side of the car so it wasn't exactly uplifting 😂

There is a coastal route and the council have decided to make it a one way system and put a cycle track in . Nobody knows what's going on , except maybe the locals who live within that route. It's not well signposted.
Google maps sents you miles out of the way, when there are several other roads that just cut out the one way bit .
I ended up in the wrong lane for the system the map wanted me to go, but I preferred the detour I took.

I've been really brave and pushing myself out my comfort zone. Driven to 5!! New places in the last month where 4 of them were country roads which is my biggest hate/fear. All of them were about an hour or more away. I know it doesn't sound like much but I'm really proud of myself.

Well done! That's amazing. I do think pushing yourself really does help to gain more confidence! You should be so so proud!
I also have been practicing my reversing when parking, and I can proudly say that iv done it a few times now! I was so proud of myself too because I usually shy away from it. Small steps.

I've got a drive coming up this weekend which is genuinely keeping me awake at night. Its for my sons football and is 28 miles away, 48 minutes from home. Up until minute 35 I am confident, after that i don't know the roads. I've Google mapped it soooo many times!! Getting there should be fairly quiet as it will be 9am on Saturday morning, but coming home will be busy.
Coming home I have to merge onto a dual carriage way which absolutely terrifies me. I'm scared I won't be able to join, won't be able to get my speed up and will end up everyone beeping me. Scared ill have to change lanes and cause issues for everyone else. The dual carriageway on the way there is 7.2 miles and coming home its 5.2 miles, less than 10 minutes each way but I'm absolutely petrified.
Nobody else can take us so it's all on me.

Have you driven on dual carriageways before? Deep breath, it's just another road. You can do this, we all believe in you ❤
Something that helps me is when I'm driving a bit I'm stressed about, I tell everyone in the car to be quiet and turn the music down, so I can focus.
Bananas are meant to help, if you like them, have one before you leave for home after the football. If people don't let you on, you'll just have to wait where you can but hopefully someone is nice and let's you in. As for changing lanes, you know this, make sure you indicate and check your blind spots. If people beep, let them, don't let it rattle you, easier said than done i know. And just remember, you're an amazing person facing your fears to do this for your son.

I did it!!!
Going there wasn't the best, the dual carriageway had a few slight lefts and my maps app wasn't clear if I was going off them or not. I took one wrong turn off the dual carriageway and had to join back on. Also missed a roundabout exit so had to loop round again. Got there on time though.
Coming back, I merged on fine and stayed in my lane until I had to exit off.
I was terrified and shaking but feel great now I've done it. Nobody beeped me and I didn't cause any accidents so win win x

Well done!! You do feel amazing after successfully completing a drive that’s stressed you out. You should be so proud.

I haven't driven for years - passed when I was very young and couldn't afford my own car, and now I can I'd like to do some refresher lessons so I can get back into it. Anyone else experienced similar? Do you ever get that confidence back after a long break?

I took refresher lessons after not having driven for a long time! Admittedly, even when I first started driving and when I actually had a car for some time, I wasn't a confident driver, but over time, I became so anxious that I really couldn't anymore and eventually decided that I needed to work on that.
I only had a few lessons with a really nice gentle instructor who calmed me down and encouraged me. The driving itself wasn't a problem, it's the confidence and me being scared of other drivers and those lessons helped a ton, but what also made a huge difference is to actually drive. I still don't own a car so my driving still isn't the greatest, I still frankly avoid going anywhere by car if I haven't driven there before. But I know I can if I need to, which is miles better than I was a couple of years ago. But you'll need to keep driving, maybe starting shorter, familiar drives to keep your confidence.

I took lessons with the local Instructor from the Institute of Advanced Drivers.

Belive me, I'm not an Advanced Driver!!

I had a minor accident recently trying to parallel park into a tight spot
I was edging my car into the space and my rear pressed against the front of another car
Caught it in my wingmirror, paused a good 5 minutes whilst my brain melted - I just could not work out what to do next
It felt like moving forward, or reversing would scratch us both!
Luckily, I was against their headlight and there was no damage (I did knock on their door and confess my sins)
My car had a few tiny scratches which may or may not have been there before (pre owned/10 years old)
I now fret parallel parking and we're searching for a house atm and i'm insistent about having a drive or off road parking 🤭

Hope it's fine to jump onto this thread

Passed my test around 10 years ago, got myself a car which personally couldn't really handle, was a 2.0 turbo convertible which was a car I liked but really couldn't drive, only drove a handful of times before getting rid of it due to just being too anxious to be out in it

Have just gotten myself a new car now, got it's keys on Friday there, an I feel like such a long gap has really done me no good especially because it was the anxiety that put me off on the first place, had to drive it home from the garage in the city on Friday night an got myself in a hell of a state with stalling it continuesly at the roundabout, it's really just thrown me, took it out today a short drive an again stalled a few times

Really stuck on how to just get over it, the whole reason I got the car is because I now need it for work since my place is moving, but I just cannot get over this stalling it an each time I do it just knocks me back again, I know my problem is not enough power but it's like my brain just refuses to connect that, I know with the car being new as well it's going have little teething problems but am really just stuck with how the hell to get over this

If anyone else has been like this please tell me it gets better 😖

This is quite embarrassing but I'm hoping someone can resonate....I've had my driving licence since I was 18, I'm now 34. I can drive pretty much anywhere within about 15 miles of our town and I'm fine.

Ask me to go anywhere else and I am a panicking mess. I've never driven on the motorway and don't think I ever will. Me and my husband have just had a bicker because our son has a football game coming up which I need to take him to and I'm fretting about the drive. Its about 30 miles, lots of merging into bypasses and slip roads and just generally looks like a nightmare in my head. I've just spent 30 minutes examining the route on Google maps looking at different options and worrying. I wish I could just stick it on the sat nav and go like all the other parents will, but I always end up panicking.
I have a fear that I'll cut someone up or take a wrong turn and end up on the motorway.
Stupid I know, but please tell me someone else feels like this too!!!
Just found this thread and I could have written this! This is me. 😩
