When he was first caught and they said he was found with a sleeping bag, we thought he must have nicked that from Millets which got us talking about what you would steal if you were on the run, I suggested a dog, that way people would be too busy looking at/fussing over your hound to look closely at you.

Then I remembered all the keyboard warriors when a dog even goes walkabout, he would have been found much sooner if he had been found wandering the streets with Barney the stolen cockapoo.

Ok, I hold my hand up, I haven't been paying attention! Prisoners go missing quite regularly, but the authorities seem extremely keen to find him - why exactly, what has he done 🤔?

Eta, I just had a google; ex soldier, bomb hoax, accused of eliciting or attempting to elicit information “about an individual who was or had been a member of His Majesty’s forces which was of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism”, and suspected of spying for Iran.
And only 21yo, he's been busy 😳
it’s not regular for inmates to escape from prison.Only 3 in last 5 years I think!

Thanks for making this thread- I am so invested in this news story!

I’m just hoping his lawyer doesn’t talk him in to changing his plea, the trial would cheer me up no end hearing him chat shit in the witness box, or at the very least tell us what he had in that Waitrose cool bag 😂

This is so funny. He is entirely unserious.

Another inmate did say he told them that 'he said hes going to be famous' maybe thats his goal? Banter king of the UK?

Was looking for a thread on this when the story first broke! I think he’ll be long gone by now too especially with the Iranian association. Just seems odd to me how invested they seem in finding him I think there’s definitely more to it than they’re letting on.

Apparently something like 80% of those charged with acts of terrorism are held in Wandsworth which is crazy. That's what I heard today - can't remember if it was on the radio or Sky news though.

ETA

There was a guy on Sky News yesterday who was a former inmate who said they were so short staffed that one of his jobs as an inmate was to take morning register on his wing!
I know inmates often have jobs to do inside in the kitchens or laundry or whatever but having the inmates taking register seems absolutely insane.
Yeah I saw that too, he said he could've easily marked someone as present when they had actually escaped. It's quite scary. They keep talking about low staffing which contributed to him escaping but I don't see how they will get people to work in prisons. There needs to be a complete overhaul but it's impossible. I wouldn't want to work with violent people with not a lot of pay.

Apparently he told someone in prison that he wanted to be famous. It's the fact they posted the chefs uniform like he is still going to be running about in his whites. I think it brings into the question how people in prison are allowed to work in the kitchen who could be violent. I reckon he's long gone - especially if someone has helped him. Going on the run doesn't paint him in a good light either, he was due to stand trail in November. He might have got found not guilty anyway.

Waitrose. Even wanted escapee terrorists have more money than me 🤣
That made me laugh out loud x
---
The cops identified a safe house they believed he was at. I suspect he got the clothes, sleeping bag etc from them and they nipped down to Richmond Waitrose for him, maybe he went along as well to get his supplies in case they missed something he wanted.
Oh, you'd want to go with, wouldn't you? A trip round an air conditioned Waitrose after being in prison? Beautiful!

I assume the others would be annoyed at him because the prison is going to increase security and now it will be harder for them to try to escape.
I am not sure if he will be seeing any others for a while, he may be left on his own to contemplate his thoughts and consequences of his actions maybe (segregated) as I imagine he is now classified as quite high risk. There will be plenty who will think he is a hero for what he did though I would imagine

Has someone messed with Wandsworth prisons wiki page or is the governor really someone called Katie Price 🙈
It is true, and she is HIDEOUS. Put someone in charge of a prison who has never worked on a wing, and this is what you get. Utterly useless, vapid waste of space.

Been listening to a few radio discussions on this. A number of ex prison officer accounts and inmate accounts of prison.

3 prisoners a week over the last 12 years have been 'accidentally'released from prison.

Experienced officers and social workers left or removed and young inexperienced officers installed (often with entirely different career backgrounds).

The equipment used for checking the underside of vehicles broken (cracked mirrors with no required lights attached) or not being checked at all.

A lot of news lately about female guards and their relationships with inmates.
Oh yeah, don't doubt that. Drugs, telecoms, all sorts of stuff happening that shouldn't be. The system definitely needs looking at rather than crying about it every now and again..

I mean... it was fun for a bit but in seriousness, I'm glad he wasn't smart enough to do any forward planning.

Maybe this was his intention, a few days out?

Chiswick is less than 2 hours walk from Wandsworth... he's a Londoner and a 21 year old ex-soldier. He knew where he was. If he wanted to go further or anywhere in particular then he would have.

From everything that’s been said about him by friends and ex-colleagues I’m getting fantasist/attention seeker vibes rather than espionage mastermind. It will be interesting to see what transpires, especially how he managed to escape from prison because given his job in the army and how little time he actually spent in, he absolutely would not have been trained in these elite escape and evasion skills the media keep alluding to. He completed basic training and his trade training (IT-related). He was the most junior rank in the army with a desk job.

Regardless of what’s happening he’s screwed himself. He’s either got a decent stretch in prison coming up, or living on the run constantly looking over his shoulder or living in hiding somewhere because he’ll always be a wanted man.
Yes, he does seem quite young, on the news commentators were making out he’d have had years of training, etc. Anyway, I bet he’s had help because he happens to know something or belongs to a group. One commentator said he might hide in a safehouse for a few weeks before making a move.
