I hope he used his MyWaitrose loyalty card. He could have got a free coffee if he brought his own reuseable cup.

This takes hiding in plain sight to a new dimension. He definitely deserves a place in Celeb Big Brother when he gets out.

posted this in the crime thread but:

if he’s gone to ground, presumably being helped by the people who assisted in his escape (as the police are saying it was prearranged) and/or the people he was working for in the first place, then i don’t think they’re gonna find him unless he slips up or someone gives him up.

he looks like literally any other london boy. even after seeing his photo so much this week i don’t know if i would register if he walked past me in the street.

I can’t lie I was buzzing for the Netflix drama that was going to unfold from this but ‘man escaped prison under lorry and is found 10 miles away’ isn’t great.
I think there’s more to the story than we’re hearing but if he was a lower level guy in the army then how much information would he really have access to? I think working in the MOD you’d need to have the highest level of security clearance to have access to any useful information and then you’d be interviewed regarding connections to other countries etc…

Wouldn’t put it past him to claim one of the guards asked him to go and pick up his Waitrose click and collect, even lent him a bike!

Well what a load of nonsense that was. It seems the prison system needs to be looked at rather than him being a special ops whizz kid like the media portrayed.

Looks as though he thought about escaping but not what to do next. Surely he'd need money and connections to support him and get out of the country - maybe he didn't think his escape would be so high profile?
He just acted like your average 21yo, not much preparation or planning, he seems to be more fantasist than international terrorist, which is a good thing but he's one to watch.

Anyone who has served in the military will know exactly what training he’s had and will know how ridiculous it is for the media to insinuate that he’s Rambo after completing basic training and then sitting behind a desk in an IT job. If he had any sort of elite training he wouldn’t be knocking around Chiswick 3 days later and allowing himself to be spotted. It also suggests that he doesn’t have people (i.e a hostile state) helping him.

When you piece it all together, given his training and role in the army, the accusations against him, and painting a picture of his personality and character from the videos of him and the comments made by people who know him, I think he’s a fantasist who has played too many video games and fancied himself as some ninja spy. Or he’s just desperate for attention/notoriety.

The thing I’m most intrigued about is how he managed to escape from prison. He doesn’t appear to be shy. His mates have described him as “cocky” and “jovial.” The prison was in such a state that he could have blagged/charmed his way into that kitchen role and then convinced someone on the inside to help with his escape. I reckon he’ll be caught in the next couple of days, then probably straight to Belmarsh for the foreseeable.

It all seems a bit suss to me. He's hardly ex SAS and what would be the point of planting fake bombs? Who is he? Why are they going so mad and then saying he's not threat to the public.
It was a very elaborate escape for someone so junior in the army. Do they really all get that level of training? The way he escaped was mission impossible style. Why was he allowed to work in a kitchen with knives if he was just on remand and it's one of the highest clearance job and he's this smart.
What is he exactly charged with?
He must have a few burns on him from clinging on to the van on such a hot day. That's probably the only hope in finding him - he's burnt his face maybe? Otherwise he's not distinctive.

I haven't read anything. Going to.
Would those on terrorism charges not be detained in a high security wings. This guy was dressed as a chef 😳
Apparently something like 80% of those charged with acts of terrorism are held in Wandsworth which is crazy. That's what I heard today - can't remember if it was on the radio or Sky news though.

ETA

There was a guy on Sky News yesterday who was a former inmate who said they were so short staffed that one of his jobs as an inmate was to take morning register on his wing!
I know inmates often have jobs to do inside in the kitchens or laundry or whatever but having the inmates taking register seems absolutely insane.

From everything that’s been said about him by friends and ex-colleagues I’m getting fantasist/attention seeker vibes rather than espionage mastermind. It will be interesting to see what transpires, especially how he managed to escape from prison because given his job in the army and how little time he actually spent in, he absolutely would not have been trained in these elite escape and evasion skills the media keep alluding to. He completed basic training and his trade training (IT-related). He was the most junior rank in the army with a desk job.

Regardless of what’s happening he’s screwed himself. He’s either got a decent stretch in prison coming up, or living on the run constantly looking over his shoulder or living in hiding somewhere because he’ll always be a wanted man.
