That is fair. She's just so interesting from a PR/marketing perspective. Far from rich/connected enough for people to follow for the unattainable lifestyle, too rich/connected to be relatable to the average person, too old for edgy teenager content, too young for unconventional professional content. Curated, but non-evolving style. No unique career/lifestyle. This is absolutely no hate to her, I am just mostly intrigued how she manages to have a significant following when she doesn't quite fit in any niche. I am curious how she started out.I feel like she’s just become too repetitive for it to be activeother than the dog whistles all she ever does is try to pretend like she’s this chaotic intelectual while she’s actually just another internet influencer. If you read the first few pages that’s pretty much still the same thing, no growth at all.

It’s mostly just people who are into the girlhood/blood/tsh/pomegranates aesthetic. She started cashing in on it during the pandemic, when it was really popular, but she definitely doesn’t have the same level of attention now as she once did.
Also, she’s recently made a switch, and her TikTok has become sort of a “daily journal,” which I assume is an attempt to sell herself as a writer in anticipation of her novel. But you’ll notice her engagement has dropped off since then, even though she still uses those aesthetic videos to draw attention to the words.
So the short answer would be just that: aesthetics. Her poetry book did better than expected because it’s very Instagrammable. Every time she shares her writing, there’s either a picture or a specific type of formatting to make it more palatable (i.e., aesthetic) for her audience. Which makes me really curious to see how her novel will do, just words on a page, without all that fluff attached to it.

It's a glorified 'Employee of the Year' corpo party and talent has no place there. I'd be beyond embarrassed to have that as the sole highlight of my writing career if I were Dakota.
Oh wow glad this chick has a thread. I feel so dumb because I found her and that whole crew (Matalas guy etc) from that summer they were making those tsh inspired videos. I stupidly thought it was like self aware ironic because she is clearly a grown a woman, and I also grew up in that tsh obsessed tumblr era they seemed to be referencing. So I thought it was a joke. (That Matalas guy can be genuinely funny as well…) Always thought her writing was terrible but I thought it was COMEDY. Like she was doing it badly on purpose, playing a character. But even that got annoying to me and over time it dawned on me she’s dead serious… lmfaoooooo.
I unfollowed her when she posted her outs and ins for 2025, in one of which she tried to claim seasonal colour analysis was “like phrenology” (or something) which was just such an insane and offensive take simply to try and look smart. I remember thinking her colour analysis must have said she shouldn’t wear red and she got pissed about it lol.
I’m also from Melbourne and frankly it says A LOT that she’d even be too pretentious and cringe for even the northern suburbs here. I honestly think she would’ve been torn apart if she stayed here, there’s just no way she could’ve survived with this persona lol. A lot of our most pretentious flee to London and then try to lord it over everyone else via Instagram stories for the rest of time. Nobody actually cares.

not from melbourne (another major australian city) and hard agree. australia as a culture simply cannot stand these types of people. that whole tall poppy syndrome phenomenon. she’s takes herself far too serious and is too curated for her to have anyone take her seriously. not to say these people don’t exist (they absolutely do… i go to a university filled with a bunch of them) but regular people won’t tolerate her bs. also australia as a literary space is so far beyond her pretentious, colonial “nowhere-girl”isms. (i say, as an indigenous person, that it is quite frankly offensive to refer to this country as “nowhere” it’s terra nullius all over again.

Also your comment about uni - makes me laugh because to some extent the cringe pretentious thing is normal for that age and I actually just assumed she was maybe 19-21 and that the cringe aspects and bad writing would be something she grows out of. Only to read she is WAY older than I thought and it’s actually just embarrassing.

Idk if it was worse back in the 2010’s when these quirky girls were all hardcore atheists or now that they’re trying to convince people they’re oh so catholic without actually following any of the doctrines of the church. Either way it’s just insufferable.

Just how genuine are your political views when they’re shaped by some larpers you hang out with?
