Y'all come out to the US and stay at my house for freedom! jk but seriously here our doom mongers of Fauci and Walensky are shrugging over it, it is not a political win here any longer, and we do not have an overburdened health service to worry about but a lot of people who are dying of other thins when hospitals were closed most of last year and many closed up shop because no money to run. Booster uptake is low if you are not at risk here as it should be and vaccinating kids isn't as popular as they hoped.

The cases will rise, some hospitalizations will especially due to testing anything that moves, but they are acting like we are in the same place as last year. Not a chance. Hopefully people disobey... My family in England says nobody cares there anymore and they are mostly medical professionals! (Still sad I cannot see them but I've rebooked for March... I will have a tantrum if I can't go!)

Sorry for double posting but it is same with flu or colds. The common cold, a rhinovirus, can have up to a 10% mortality rate in elderly. Covid is about the same - 8% I believe - in those age groups. We knew from Diamond Princess this affects primarily the elderly as do most respiratory viruses. We aren't immortal.
Wtf is Rhinovirus or don’t I want to know? 😬

What do we need a lockdown for? Christ this is never going to end is it. Let’s just destroy the economy and peoples mental health for a virus that most people survive. That makes perfect sense.
The problem is, the pressure from the scientists. They will put the pressure on to curb the spread. Then you have the part of the media that continues with its fear inducing reporting, along with some medical experts on twitter who are also spreading the negative news constantly about the Omicron. I am seeing it all the the. 'we just don't know how serious Omicron is. More hospitalisations in SA and Denmark due to Omicron' etc, etc.

Also, i think we are acting fast this time, due to Sajid Javid being given the role. He obviously doesn't want to take chances, and is probably trying to shoe himself into a position of being the next PM. Best way to do that is show as much caution and worry about this new variant, and act far faster than the last guy did.

In the elderly and the vulnerable a cold can definitely cause severe respiratory issues such a pneumonia
To be fair, my family and I had covid, all unvaccinated, and a common clod was much worse, fatigue aside. Not making light of it, but it does seem to impact people differently.
You wouldn’t go and see poorly Nanny and Grandad if you knew you had a cold - so what’s wrong with telling people to test bi weekly for a virus you might have no symptoms for that causes difficulty breathing and pneumonia. Why is that ridiculous?

Rhinoviruses and coronaviruses cause common colds, mostly rhinoviruses. There's thinking the 1889 outbreak of 'flu' was actually a novel coronavirus which is now just... harmless, as this one is becoming inevitably.

I think the worst is norovirus though, UGH! THAT one ya don't wanna know... I wish we had a vaccine for that nasty...

Nobody wants a PM that will plunge us into lockdown at any given opportunity. The effects of a lockdown are imo more devastating than anything covid causes. Especially a winter lockdown.

It's ridiculous because it is a battle to get tests on the NHS when you have symptoms for potentially deadly diseases/cancers. But let's test perfectly healthy people for a virus with over a 99% survival rate

My 15 year old son told us last night that he'd rather die then have to homeschool again. How can this be ok? This can't be allowed to happen again

I wish I could help you... My son cried and cried at online school, missed his friends. They ALL talked about how much they hated their life, cried constantly together on the stupid Zoom classes where nobody learned a thing, and it was an affluent school so parents were around. They were 7 and 8!!! :(

It's ridiculous because of the fact people that actually have symptoms can't get a bloody test because people are using them up going socialising that don't have symptoms .

If you have symptoms you're advised to get a PCR test, whereas LFTs are advised for regular testing/social events, when you don't have any symptoms. So the two shouldn't be competing.

It is ridiculous. I wouldn’t go and see an elderly relative (not that I have any, my last died last year after being shut in her care home room alone for 9 months) if I was displaying virus symptoms. But we cannot keep handing out tests to healthy people. Covid is not the only virus on this planet which doesn’t display symptoms. Everyone who has ever died of a virus was given it by someone else. People weren’t made to feel guilty or vilified for passing on the virus. It was just one of those things. We cannot prevent death.

There’s none of both surely it makes sense to limit them for certain social situations as it doesn’t make a difference to the outcome if you have a pos test.

I think he's just scrambling to achieve a target set by his boss

It's similar to deadline quota targets at many companies.

It doesn't matter if it actually makes any sense everyone has to strive to achieve it any way. The boss must meet his goals
