My dad always buys me things I won’t use so this year I just asked him for an M&S gift card. He was over visiting last night dropping off presents and i was expected mine to be in a card but nope, he’s bought me something that’s in a box

Ooh I love this thread! I am the worst person to buy for as if I want something I just buy it myself, so I always just ask for money
My MIL is lovely, but OMG every year she gets me a giftbag filled with old lady style presents, silk scarfs, odd purses, weird jewellery boxes. All her style too and she's a hoarder so it's definitely stuff she's found so she's just regifted! I give them all to my little sister to gift to her partner's older relatives as his family is huge and she isn't flush with money.
I've had some horrendous secret santas too, Id been in my old job for about a year and we had to write what we wanted, I just said NO SMELLIES OR BATH STUFF as I'm a fussy cow. Got a giftset of handcreams

My mum bless her tries, but last year she gave me a handbag she bought for herself and decided she didn't want, I didn't either and she told me I could sell it (it was designer) which I did and she asked for the money back. 
My mum and I do the same dance every year. She gets a voucher for husband and I but insists on a physical pressie too. Asks what skincare, haircare products I use, I tell her no its fine they are expensive. She insists again. I tell ok but just warning you again, I use expensive stuff (btw it is not hugely pricey, I just know what she considers expensive).
Then she buys them, hands them over in a parcel and literally goes on the whole day about the "fortune" she spent on moisturiser and face wash I use. Its incredibly irritating.

My mum asks what I want and then goes and buys me the opposite. This year I asked for gift cards so I don't have to carry presents on the train or open them early. She got me presents. I opened them early and half of them I can't use because of allergies so I asked my partners sister if she wants them and so now I don't even have half the stuff I was given. What's the point?
I never understand why people ask for a list and then ignore it or buy something similar to, but not what you asked for. Years ago I asked for some clothes. I listed the shop, size, clothing code and where they were physically in the store. Opened my presents on Christmas Day and my mum had gone to M&S and BHS and bought some random stuff. I was 16 and very unimpressed at a woollen twinset I asked whether she’d kept the receipts and it all got taken back. Again, because I didn’t like/want it I didn’t get any replacements.

I have allergies and know this feeling well, someone always ends up buying chocolates and toiletries that I can't use. At least with my siblings (all mid 20s to 30s now) we just get each other vouchers as 1) we know it's easier and we can get what we want and 2)it suits my brothers to buy gift cards because they are disorganised and hate the whole wrapping process. Each of us ends up happy then we get to choose. We'll probably eventually knock swapping vouchers on the head soon too and spend the money on ourselves.
If you buy toiletries or gift set from Tesco, you hate the person. Fact.

One of my great Aunts would go to Boots and buy the 3 for 2 giftsets, which sometimes are fine but every male in the family would get the same wash kit and every female would get the same pedicure kit, and when younger we used to have massive gatherings so when it came to opening her presents, they had to be opened at the same time
Bless her she gave up eventually as too many people to buy for. The gifts weren't missed

One of my friends parents don’t buy their daughter a Christmas present, instead they pay her and her boyfriends rent for the month and do their food shop

My mum loves buying stuff. And she works in a supermarket so we get loads of gift sets (bayliss and harding etc) and I say every year, please don't buy them. I would rather you saved your money and bought me one nice present and her response is "they didn't cost a lot I got them when they were on sale" which to me is even worse. She isn't buying it because she thinks we will like it, just because it is cheap
That is a great idea, I always find as an adult I can generally buy things I want. I tend to ask for things around the house nothing for me per say, I find the idea of asking for things I want a bit odd.

I’ve had some bloody shockers over the years. The worst one was from an ex-boyfriend’s mum. She got me a massive Paul’s Boutique handbag (if anyone remembers them circa 2009). It was a shade of pink I’ve never seen outside of the highlighter pen section in WHSmith, you could have seen it from outer space. It was covered in My Little Pony patches and little dangly beaded tassels. Truly the handbag that taste forgot. The worst part being that every time I went round to her house or went somewhere I knew she’d be, I had to actually use the fucker

Hers was a hideous shade of pink too. Sounds like it could have been the same bag.
I hate getting gifts so much which makes me sound so ungrateful but if I want something I buy it myself. I know that buying gifts is some peoples love language and I try to accept with grace though I never open presents in front of anyone as my face gives it away 
I think you always know when something has been re-gifted which is why I would never re-gift to anyone. I give vouchers, money or consumables that I know they like.

My mum normally buys clangers of gifts so this year I ordered a new pair of trainers, asked her for the money & gave them to her to wrap up for me

My Secret Santa last year got me a but plug... apparently there was talk that my SS was also going to get me a double ended dildo but people told her I wouldn't find it funny & not appropriate, (which tbh I would've found it funny). Let's just say I put my gift bag down after work & the dog came out with it in her mouth

My aunt always asks what I want for Christmas. The one time I really did tell her there was only one item on my list a MAC Ruby Woo lipstick - I got a blue poncho instead.
