I could never get my shopping delivered so close to Christmas  Not even substitutes I worry about but the dates - I know the dates would be crap!
I shop in-store but it's the big superstore Tesco that does the local deliveries too. The staff must not date rotate the stock and 9/10 when you shop in-store everything is close to being out of date. I went on Thursday morning (12th October) and they had packets of ham sitting dated 10th October!
This happens a lot in there, you really have to check your meat etc. I'm not sure how its so bad as I worked PT in Tesco when I was 18 and our manager was always making sure we knew to date rotate, and you got into trouble if you didn't because of the sheer amount of waste. I'd say my Tesco are forever dumping and wasting food :(

I'm perplexed that no one seems to have mentioned using the freezer to relieve the pressure of having no food ready at Christmas 🤷
I was taught by an older work colleague to cook the meat in November, portion it out into easi leave sheets (from Lakeland), and freeze in a plastic box.
Everything barring the veg and stuffing mix was frozen so all I had to do on Christmas morning was take out however many portions of meat I needed for the number of people that were definitely going to turn up that day. Defrost any other Christmas stuff. Then I could do the veg and stuffing in a leisurely fashion.
As freezers have the ability to marinate (who knew! 😳) the meat would be lovely and succulent. 😀
I think my colleague felt sorry for me after listening to years of my horror stories.
My Christmas is done and dusted in November, so I don't have to worry about things being out of stock.
As the saying goes winner winner chicken dinner. 😄😄😄😄
p s. then come New Year off to the relatives for another Christmas dinner, during which I would be condescended to on the proper way to do things, whist I forced down the rubbery meat cooked that day and rubbery frozen carrots etc etc. Whilst people would whisper in my ear that my Christmas dinner had been much nicer 🤭😂🤣😂
I always cook and freeze the veg at the beginning of December, husband cooks the turkey on the day and my vegetarian alternative. I'll have to tell him about cooking the turkey and freezing it.

Really excited. Been to Next and they have some amazing Xmas decorations. My sister in law always says how much she likes some of mine, so that's her sorted out. I love the large candle holders inside antlers - I want one. 😎😁.

I've ordered this for my sons bedroom as I missed out on the cheap argos ones posted earlier in this thread. Happy with that price 🎄 View attachment 2510475
Just ordered this, thank you

This will be perfect for our landing space as we have a table with a lamp there and then a little balcony area that looks down into our kitchen. I usually have some Christmas lights wrapped around the balcony and then some lights going up the stairs banister but that space has been crying out for something else and this will be perfect instead of the lamp during Christmas.

Mr Tinkerbell Cat will be foaming at the mouth when he see's I've ordered yet another Christmas tree even if it is only tiny 😂

I'm interested to know what veg you cook and freeze. Carrots are my bugbear for freezing. Any tips on veg would be most welcome
😀

Personally I don’t find the Xmas dinner that much of a faff- meat in, peel potatoes and carrots parsnips, parboil and put in oven as well. Ditto stuffing and pigs in blankets. And then it’s just boiling veg…

maybe people are doing fancier stuff than I am?!

I agree. Xmas Dinner is just a roast with a few extras.

If your timings are right then it's no naff at all.

Managed to easily book my Sainsbury’s delivery this morning, a lot easier than the hours spent in a virtual queue for Tesco.

We’re staying at my in laws for a few days at Christmas so I’m not too panicked about my delivery, it’s mostly for the Christmas to new year week snacking 😂

I cook the roast veg, so carrots, parsnips and roasts and I make my Yorkshire puddings and freeze them as well. I've never had any problem once I re-heat them in the oven. I'm not sure it saves that much time as we bang them in the oven for around 20 minutes on the day. It just saves boiling the veg before roasting them. I don't have any tips, I do quarter the carrots and parsnips so they're chunky, not sure if that makes a difference.

Same. Every year I have an argument with my husband as he wants to prep the veg and put it in the pans the night before, like his parents do.
I actually enjoy this prep time in the kitchen with the carols on and Buck’s Fizz in reach.

Yes!!! I love prep time too.

I make my cauli cheese the day before so it can just be shoved in the oven, I also make my pigs in blankets and if I'm making dessert I make that too. Otherwise Christmas morning, songs on, glass of fizz, give me the peeler and I'm happy as Larry.

Veg prep is a family affair on Christmas Eve for us, but that's because there are 17 of us on Christmas Day, but I do love the tradition. 10am Christmas Eve morning we all gather at the hosts house and do all the prep work, Christmas TV on, someone inevitably opens a biscuit tin that was meant to be a gift to snack on, and of the 7 households there will always be one whose dedicated prep representative will turn up convientiely late just as the last carrot has been peeled...
