The Nazir Afzal interview demonstrated to me why the whole programme was pointless. Even with this opinion that the CPS juggernaut ran away with itself, it didn't make Christine feel ant better at all, arguably it made it all worse. I don't think I learnt anything from it and found it quite superficial really.

It just felt like Christine desperately trying to blame someone to feel better about what happened but even if someone else stood up and took full responsibility for what happened she wouldn’t feel any better as it wouldn’t change what happened.

The minimisation of what happened that night by her mother and others in that documentary is actually quite sickening. They just brushed over her throwing the phone at him, like it wasn’t a big deal to throw something with force towards a sleeping person. Not only that but Caroline was completely out of control when police arrested her, flipping tables at the police station and completely aggressive and irate. They completely ignored all of that and made out that she just brushed the phone off his head to wake him up and that was that.

Her mother is on a hiding to nothing searching tor this “truth” that she believes she can uncover. It does not matter one bit of the victim doesn’t want to press charges anymore, the CPS still have grounds to prosecute because often victims of abuse will be coerced by their abuser to withdraw their claims in the hopes that charges will be dropped.

I’m not sure what “truth” she is hoping to uncover and the whole thing felt very intrusive having Caroline’s private texts and voicenotes splashed all over the screen. The only truth that seems to be relevant is that Caroline, as we know from the previous documentary, suffered with her mental health issues her entire life and it’s sad to say but it seems like this was always going to be the way she left this earth.

There is no big “gotcha” to be had, or some huge revelation or uncovering. She attacked her partner and was about to lose everything and unfortunately could not cope with the pressure or see a way out. The whole thing is sad and she just needs to be left to rest now.

Also the semantics over the lamp vs phone made me uncomfortable. Again, glossing over the fact that she launched an object at a sleeping person causing an injury, and focusing completely on the wrong point.

I didn’t like how they were suggesting that Lewis was retaliating with spite in the heat of the moment. If I was asleep and was woken up by being bashed in the head you can be damn sure I’d be calling the police too.

Just finished watching this and have absolutely no clue what the point was in making this. Her mother is deluded. Having watched the previous channel 4 doc I really felt for Caroline and it didn’t attempt to paint her as innocent and I think it covered her mental health struggles in a really understanding way. Yes she was hounded by the press but she also courted them and ultimately it was her MH struggles throughout life that led to her taking her life.

That Disney thing was honestly tin hat rit

Yes! It would be more informative to have a documentary covering what it is like to live with BPD for example. Caroline didn't want anyone to know about it. Let's push through that and let people learn and understand it.

Afaik yes, especially if it's categorised as DV.
Her mums behaviour is baffling now, what the end game? Who is she looking to blame? because she seems to be pointing the finger at everyone else without acknowledging that herself and Carolines close family had more of the information/background story than some of her friends, friends who seem to be doing everything they could to support Caroline.
Carolines issues seem to have been going on since childhood when her parents would have been her main care givers, they knew how bad her mental health was and it was a bizarre industry to get into, given how fragile she seemed to be.
I don't understand the want in her Mum to blame everyone, there doesn't seem to be any acknowledgement that no matter how you want to help someone, if they're not open to it, you can't make them. Caroline has been infantilised in the rewritten narrative her Mum is running with, Caroline was an adult who made adult choices, and seems to have been babied since birth by her family.
For her hand wringing now and finger pointing, where was the family? why weren't they all running shifts like her friends were? They knew how bad she had been for decades, and I really don't want to blame her family, but given how shes blaming everyone else, it does leave that question hanging, where were you, why wasn't Caroline under better treatment as a teen if it's as bad as her mother is saying now?

Theres an absolute whiff of mourn porn off this whole spectacle, we've had how many documentaries? How many interviews? How many 'IF YOU ONLY KNEW' statements?
If Caroline was so worried about being exposed by the crime scene pics being published, how would she feel about her life being exposed like this, her personal texts, her absolute worst fears?
I just can't fathom how a parent thinks this is a way to keep her memory alive.
I was surprised when her Mum advised her to come and stay with her and she refused! Why didn’t she go to her daughter to stay with her? Why was it left to her friends? She was blatantly falling to pieces. I think she’s in denial and looking to blame anyone but herself!

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but think under UK law you can’t just change your mind and withdraw charges even if you want to. That’s not how it works
There's actually no such thing as pressing charges in the UK (or US, despite what most people think). You just report a crime. The police investigate, if they feel there's enough evidence, they pass it to the CPS. If they think there's enough evidence and prosecution is in the public interest, that's that.

If someone withdraws their evidence, it can sometimes stop a prosecution, because if only two people are involved there might not be enough evidence to go ahead. If the CPS still feel it's in the public interest, they've got enough evidence to go ahead, or that prosecution should happen for the safety of the complainant, you're basically SOL.

Truthfully, that they were going to go ahead with this tells you everything you need to know. IIRC correctly, when the police turned up he was bleeding from the head and Caroline admitted to hitting him with an (apparently now disputed) object. Of course they charged her. Apart from the fact they had a bleeding man and a woman admitting she hit him, can you imagine the tit storm if they didn't charge her but he was seriously hurt at a later date?

She seemed to have terrible taste in men and some toxic relationships! That Lewis seems a nasty piece of work sending his friend that pic of all her blood on the bed and her other ex poking his nose in saying he was abused too and stirring up trouble and then blaming the media etc for her death!

Having watched it, I am surprised they made the decision to charge. She had no previous convictions, admitted her guilt and he needed no medical treatment and dropped the charges. I’m not saying what she did wasn’t wrong at all, but I feel a caution could have sufficed in this instance. Having said that, I think she was always a big suicide risk with her mental health problems and it was an ill advised career to go into with such issues.

The decision to charge was made because she had assaulted him with a weapon whilst he was asleep, she did not make a clear admission of guilt when questioned by police, there was a visible head wound and there was enough evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction, even without the cooperation of the victim. It was a much more serious crime than the mum would have you believe. A caution isn't appropriate in such a case.

We've all said this before but can you imagine the headlines if the Lewis guy had thrown something at Caroline, whilst she was sleeping, causing a bleeding head wound. Nobody would be trying to excuse his behaviour. He'd - rightly - be damned from here to hell.

It’s all just so very sad. I don’t see what the point of the documentary was really, apart from her Mum trying to gain a bit of ownership over the whole thing for her daughter. I can imagine I’d feel the same. But I can’t imagine a world where my adult daughter is a suicide risk, and I haven’t gone to her and brought her to safety. Rightly or not, I get Caroline feeling as though she couldnt come back from this - her whole life was in the public eye and everyone knew her business. I can’t imagine how that would feel and I don’t know what I would do in that situation. I get panicky over forgetting to do a risk assessment for work, how would it feel if everything was taken from you and played out in public. I’m not defending Caroline because at the end of the day, she hit him regardless. But it’s just so sad that this was how her life turned out

I feel like the documentary was conflicting but also a bit pointless? I understand her mum's need for answers or to make sense of it and set the record straight about some things (i.e the blood in that one photo being hers), but it won't fix anything. It also seemed like a lot of her friends/family/team had to basically be on suicide watch during the trial, because she was afraid to leave her flat? She should've been given proper mental health care as I doubt they were equipped to deal with that.

I find the response to her death a bit baffling because people like to gloss over the bad things she did, much like Jade Goody. (i.e dating Harry Styles when he was a teen, throwing the phone at her boyfriend) Not saying she deserved the treatment she got or to feel like suicide is the only way out, but it seems like her family want her to be remember as this saint.

I do think the media was very intrusive and think they 100% deserved to be called out for how they wrote about the trial and some of the other articles they published (like reporting on that 'joke' card someone made of her), but I don't know that they'll actually face any repercussions for that. Unfortunately, as long as they covered their bases by putting 'allegedly' in articles, I'm not sure much can be done there. I think you're always going to get bad 'journalists' like Dan Wooton and Perez Hilton who primarily seem to attack women.

I really truly feel for Caroline's mum. You can tell she's heartbroken and struggling and my heart genuinely goes out to her. But at the same time, she frustrates me. I feel like in her eyes, Caroline can never do any wrong and I can't stand parents like that, that can never criticise their children's actions. It leads to spoilt and unhealthy behaviour.

At the end of the day, Caroline did do wrong and she did assault her boyfriend. She deserved to be punished for that legally and she did deserve to be called out by the public and press. If it were a man, their treatment would be a lot worse. The police/prosecution in this case can't win. If they did nothing, they'd be criticised for not doing anything about her abusive behaviour as she's female and famous. When they did do something, they got a lot of stick for that, too.

Her exes even came out saying she was abusive and hard work. She clearly had a lot of issues and was hard work. Olly Murs even said she used to obsessively read up comments about herself on Twitter and other socials.

I don't like the way Caroline's mum has sort of snubbed Lou and other friends that really tried their hardest to help. Lou even was the one to find Caroline (along with her dad), and her dad tried resuscitating Caroline which must have been really traumatic. Caroline's mum has never shown gratitude or support to Lou, her dad or any of Caroline's friends.

We already had the Channel 4 documentary a few years ago about Caroline, I don't understand why we need another. I know what Caroline's mum is trying to do, she wants the public to change their mind about her daughter and feel guilt and remorse for anything bad that they've said. But I'm sorry, Caroline was abusive and hard work and that behaviour shouldn't be excused. I say this as a female victim of dv myself in a previous relationship. It does anger me to be honest.

Every single word of this! 👏 I wonder if she ever reached out to Lou's father. Probably not.

This documentary was a bad idea.

It was icky how the doc referred to her “romance” with Harry Styles in a way that painted her as an it girl who turned all the heads of the men around her. That relationship was completely inappropriate!

Her other notable romances with Andrew Brady and Lewis were also both guys in their 20’s whilst she was late 30’s/40. You could argue that she went for much younger guys because of her emotional immaturity but she also was successful in her career which meant there was a significant power imbalance in the relationships she chose.
