Breast feeding

The NHS, Lullaby Trust, it’s common knowledge. It’s often said that breastfeeding lowers the risk, but it’s scientifically inaccurate to say that really. As an extrinsic risk factor formula feeding isn’t the biological norm, it’s a risk factor not a protective factor.
Thank you, no one ever told me that! I combi fed in the beginning & then she got too used to the bottle & wouldn’t latch. I also don’t think I had a lot of milk. She’s 9 months & I still get mum guilt for not being able to bf for longer. She’s happy, healthy & growing perfectly though 👍🏻

Good routine? Freya shouldn’t need feeding in the night at her age. I have twins who have slept through from 5-6 months. Dream feed yes, but she absolutely does not need feeding in the night at her age and size.
Freya is breastfed and absolutely will still need milk at night. It's perfectly normal.
Formula is heavier on babies stomachs so they stay full for longer and will sleep better (although that's not always the case)
Babies wake in the night, it's a built in safety mechanism for them too. Its biological.
My son was breastfed until 2yrs old and he slept through every night from he was weeks old but he would cluster feed for hours every evening so he was getting his quota of milk. Other babies will take more regular feeds and spread them over the 24hr period.
Its absolutely not the case that a baby freyas age doesnt need milk in the night. Shes perfectly normal and healthy.

You make it sound like I WANT to be up 3 x times a night. I most certainly do not but my baby wakes and despite repeated attempts to get him down without a feed, neither me nor my partner has been successful in this in 5 and a half months. I would love to have the choice of sleeping but I don't have that luxury. None of us choose this life, we deal with the cards we are given. That's what has upset me...you imply that under the same conditions my baby would sleep through under your parenting and that I am somehow choosing the wakes and feeds. I am most certainly not.
Just to say - it does get a little easier. I say this, my son wakes up constantly but I think that's due to toddler nightmares. But the night feeds lessen. You're a great mama and every little one is different ❤

Pregnant at the moment, due in 7 weeks. Have no plans to breastfeed, have never wanted to that’s just my choice. Pressure on women to breastfeed and being looked down upon just because they aren’t is everything wrong with society. I was breastfed, my brother was never given a single drop straight onto the bottle and who has been more ill over the years? Me the breastfed one. Not saying that is why obviously but fed is best not breast is best.

I breastfeed my 15 month old and am so glad I chose to. At the beginning I felt discouraged because she lost too much weight and I had to combi feed for a couple of weeks. I felt like I was failing my baby but also was determined to continue for many reasons - breastfeeding wasn’t a decision I took lightly. It was hard work, for a few weeks I barely went two hours without pumping or feeding to boost my supply. Even after it was established I had to work to maintain it as it’d quickly drop if my feeding/pumping regime was disturbed

I think it’s too simplistic to credit certain things to breastfeeding. I can understand academic studies having certain findings but on an individual basis, I don’t think it’s really possible to attribute anything. My daughter is securely attached to me, happy, confident - which could be for any number of reasons. She also had pretty severe reflux and now has allergies. But I’ll never know what she would’ve been like if she was formula fed - her cousin was and he has the same allergies

The only regret I have is not being confident enough to breastfeed in public more often. If I had to feed her while out, I’d normally pump (which would take 40 minutes), have to worry about the milk being fresh enough, have to worry about my supply dropping due to missing feeds/pumps, have to worry about the milk being the right temperature, be in pain with engorged boobs. All that while I could have just fed in public

Breastfeeding also made night feeds easier for me - I also coslept so my sleep was relatively undisturbed

so I usually just read this thread and don’t post & this may be a little long so sorry in advance!!!
so, my friend had a baby 2 weeks after me my little one will be 5months on Sunday so hers is around 4&half month
Her baby can’t sit up on his own but she started to wean him around 5-6 weeks ago, she keeps sending snapchats of her feeding him he seemed to be pushing porridge out with his tongue and turning his head away from the spoon and not opening his mouth when the spoon was being given too him & generally showing no interest in it so I suggested he maybe wasn’t ready for it yet but she made a fuss saying he definitely is and was told so by the midwife and he’s just turning away because the TV was on, she just sent another snapchat of her feeding him a rusk, I thought these were meant to be crushed and mixed with milk? But she’s giving it to him just as the whole biscuit and keeps smacking his hand away when he’s trying to push it out his mouth, so I again I said he doesn’t seem interested in it and should probably just have his milk but if she really wants to try it then mix it with his milk and she’s adamant that’s not what you do 🤷🏼‍♀️ She then sent another of him with the ellas kitchen melty puffs and said he’s just had 3 full ones all by himself which to me he hasn’t at all since hes not holding things properly yet
I really don’t think he’s ready for food I know it’s not up to me but I just feel so bad for him 😩

I know it is frustrating but you can’t do much about it. You are correct about the rusks - they are supposed to be mushed up with milk as a first food, then recommended as a finger food at about 10 months when he is weaned and can feed himself . It is a concern that he will choke, especially as he is not cooperating. The only thing you can really do is advise her to check the rusk packaging (the guidance is on there). You could send her some information about why weaning is recommended at 6 months and the risks associated with doing it earlier - choking, digestive problems, malnourishment etc. A Google search will bring up plenty of advice and research. Chances are she won’t listen as she hasn’t so far and apparently has a professional supporting her

It used to bother me a lot too but it’s unproductive. If she doesn’t agree then you just have to get on with it, focus on doing what you think is right by your own baby

Oh I hate this! Had similar with a family member who weaned one of theirs stupidly early at around 12 weeks old, wouldn’t even wait until the absolute bare minimum of 16 weeks as per the baby food jars. It was because the baby was apparently ‘drinking too much milk’ and there was pressure from older family member who did things differently when their kids were small. The baby was showing all the signs of not being interested pretty much exactly how you explained. Not sitting at all, pushing food out with the tongue (which is a reflex I forget what it’s called now) and turning the head away from the spoon. There were pics on social media of the kid with food round it’s mouth and I’m sorry but I don’t find anything cute about a baby being weaned before it’s developmentally ready.

It winds me up something rotten but I’ve found it’s best just to not say anything. People get defensive over when they choose to wean their kids and will use any excuse to justify it such as the milk thing (as if a rusk or baby rice is going to be more nutritionally beneficial than calorie dense baby milk). Nothing anyone says will change their mind so it’s best to let them get on with it. Weaning is messy so why anyone would want to do it any earlier than necessary I don’t know. The nappies In particular are gross at the start of weaning🤢 But yeah, try not to let it get to you. Hard when they keep harping on about it on social media though.

I wouldn’t be so bothered usually as it’s not my child so it’s none of my business but she constantly messages asking what my baby is eating now and how much but when I say she’s still just having her milk she says things like ‘oh wow really? Isn’t she developing her milestones properly?my boy must just be hitting them early he’s so clever’ So I said they arent supposed to wean until 6 months and she can sit up by self so she’s hitting them fine🙃 but she’s just always like ‘wow my baby is eating by himself now I bet yours is starving lol’ making snide comments so I’ve just started to not reply and be like yeah cool🙂 I just wanted a rant tbh my fiancé doesn’t listen so a group of other internet mums seemed the right place🤣

You’ve certainly come to the right place she sounds like a total night mare! Like one of those competitive mums who’s kid has to be the first to do everything. The snide comments from her are out of order of course your baby isn’t starving. Milk has way more calories and nutrients than pretty much any food you could give to a baby so that argument doesn’t hold up. I do think people see weaning as a race somewhat, I remember when my kids were babies some parents seemed desperate to get them on food as soon as possible, I get giving your kid food is exciting but it really shouldn’t be a rushed thing either. Only a small handful of the babies I knew who were weaned early seemed genuinely ready to me but I guess “mum knows best” apparently. I would go with the ‘smile and nod’ approach whilst slowly distancing yourself from her.

She sounds like a bit of a cow to be honest 🙊🙊🙊 the sooner she learns having kids isn’t a competition as to whose baby can do what first, the better off she’ll be. You sound like a brilliant, super sensible mummy. You are following all the guidance and know your baby well. It is SOOOO frustrating when people do things we don’t agree with (especially when they flout basic guidelines) and they are insistent they are right. I think you just have to try and accept she will never listen, and it’s always going to be a competition between the two of you for her. Just smile, and say her little one is lovely, and say you’re so delighted with your own little one. You’ve given her a chance to accept your offer of guidance and it’s been thrown back at you. Very annoying, but what else can you do? For your own sanity, try not to dwell on it.

And well done feeding your little one this far 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I totally agree here! I’m hate weaning. My friend was desperate to start it early and I think she did, each time their own, but I’ve waited until
6 months each time (my 3rd is currently 4 months but I’ll wait again) I think people mix up the four month sleep regression with them needing food. But I’m waiting until I absolutely have to start it 😂 I don’t enjoy doing it.

I waited till around 6 months for mine too and don’t regret it! It was messy but easy because I wasn’t forcing them before they were ready. Good point about the 4 month sleep regression it was so bad with my first! But her sleep was terrible till around 9 months so food wouldn’t have made a difference. Lost count of how many times people told me I should just give her baby rice or a rusk to help her sleep, because sugar in a rusk is going to help a tiny baby sleep well🤷🏻‍♀️ Then when she was over 6 months and still sleeping terribly people had no answers and apparently it was my fault. Can’t win😅

I’m sure my son’s sleep got worse when he started eating 😂 but he sleeps through now he’s 8
😂 My daughter’s sleep was just so bad I didn’t even notice a regression because she was permanently in that state. She sleeps through now. I feel like with this one I’m so used to being disturbed in the night from before it’s not bothered me as much. I’ve had issues with b/f so I’m expressing 8 times a day so I’m up in the night doing that and I just feel on autopilot now.

I find this a really interesting subject, and it’s so emotive for some it’s hard to have a open and honest conversation about it.

Firstly I believe it’s misogynistic to tell a woman either directly and indirectly what they should do with their own body. If you believe in a woman’s right to chose then you must extend that to breastfeeding.

however, there is firm evidence that breast is best, at a population level, for mother and baby. What we do have though is many woman who try to breastfeed but aren’t given adequate help to succeed and Breast feed as long as they want.
A poster way back raised the issue of woman saying they don’t produce enough milk. And the reality is, it is rare for a woman not to be able to produce enough Milk. Women are not destined to either produce milk or not, your production is stimulated by the baby.
That does mean constant suckling at times and many woman mistake that for the baby not getting enough. There should be people Able to explain how it works in detail.

But for these women who don’t want to even try, they should just be left to it. Enough resources are needed to help the massive number of women who stop earlier than they want, we shouldn’t waste them on persuading women who don’t want to

I agree with why would you want to start early with weaning. They eat forever. It’s constant preparation of food and snacks for the hungry little buggars, so I enjoy the time with just boobs while I can! Older two were 6 months to the day, youngest was more around 6.5 months. I remember it all fondly 🤣
