i bought sky daddy immediately on reading the synopsisalso went for shield of sparrows, good people, meet the newmans, euphoria and thrist trap. probably the most i’ve bought on the first day of the deals for ages!
I forgot about the lack of punctuation, People in Love lost stars because I had to re-read stuff to work out who said what to who.
My July reads!
The Maids Secret - don’t know why I’ve bothered carrying on with this series when I thought the 1st was a bit crap! On paper these would be right up my street but they just miss the mark I think? 3/5
Atmosphere - love love love. Only knocked .25 of a star off because the space talk confused me at times

The Identicals - Elin Hilderbrand never disappoints and I always try to read at least one over the summer 4.5/5
Famous Last Words - one of the best thrillers I’ve read for ages, was totally hooked. Reminded me of Wrong Place Wrong Time by the same author which is an all time fave 5/5
Yesteryear - didn’t really get the hype? Liked the premise and the last 20% was good but boy did it drag in the middle 3.5/5

I'm part way through The Tarot Reader of Versailles, and I was just thinking that it's got that unfortunate trope of recent historical fiction of the female protagonist being Not Like Other Girls.
She's literally just described herself as "not like other women"
By the way, she considers herself superior to other women because she can read and write (despite the fact that almost every other woman she's met so far also can) and because she sneers at women who are married or have children.
The book is written by a woman, as well. Sigh.

I have been known to say ‘I’m planning for retirement’ when comments have been made about my TBR pile(s).

Eg I am not like those girly witches who like fashion and gossip, I am superior as I want to roll around in the dirt and become a Knight etc.
This is especially infuriating when the story is set in an era when a womens entire future wellbeing and financial security is largely down to who she is married to.
My last book....
One Last Secret by Adele Parks. I was in a bit of an audiobook slump after listening to all of Dungeon Crawler Carl. I wanted something very different that had no magical or scifi elements.
It was a fun trashy thriller, I kept imagining how it would look if it was a 4 part drama on either ITV or 5, as it felt like the kind of thing they would make.
The mc was infuriating at points. She has to walk into a very obvious trap to make the story happen, and it feels a little silly that someone who has previously made such a big deal about personal safety would suddenly decide to ignore their gut and the obvious red flags.

The Bluest Eye is a phenomenal book.
I finished The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones this morning. It is only a small 280ish page book. I raced through it. In such few pages the author managed to develop the two main characters in a way that I felt like I knew them and we were friends. It is the only book in about a year that has made me cry. Not just tears on my face but little sobs. This book is unforgettable.
I hate that trope. The main character is usually a bookworm that never wears make up and doesn't follow fashion. The bad female character is a girl that wears make up, short skirts, and assumption is made that she's stupid because she enjoys girly things.
Do you guys recommend the kobo or kindle? I'll probably wait till black Friday to get one if I do but just keeping an eye out
I prefer my kobo - I like the size of it, since it's smaller than my paperwhite, and the fact that I can read ebooks from my library on it. You also get pretty much all the same deals that Amazon has.
That said, I think the interface on kindle is easier to navigate, and the Amazon website is more user-friendly.
Since moving to Kobo I don't miss my kindle, but I never used Kindle unlimited and I understand the unlimited package is better on Amazon, so if that's something you do, you may need to find reviews from users who use the kobo alternative.
However I love my kobo libre colour, and i like the fact you can download the book files to your PC as a backup (aka owning them). Often the main publishing house 99p deals are mirrored on Kobo. Not always, but most of the time.
I did use to like the kindle but I jumped over when they stopped us downloading copies of our books.
I also have the kobo clara black and white which is little and perfect for my work /travel bag, and my libre colour stays at home for daily reading.
Is the device itself better than kindle? No. I found them similar. It was more of a political reason for me. Also in the UK on kobo you can borrow books from libraries if you are signed up to your library's ebook platform.

Anyway got a copy of Rodham by Curtis Sittenfield, 20 pages in and it's pretty good : love her writing (*loved* Prep) and the idea is interesting but Hillary Clinton as the main character feels kinda weird
(not the biggest fan of her and not American, so maybe not the targeted audience).
Can't complain though, it's getting me out of the reading slump !

Loved Rodham. In fact Curtis Sittenfeld is one of my fave authors. I can highly recommend her short stories collections and American Wife.Thinking of sending flowers to a lady who gives the best books at the local charity shop (she put a label with her name and address inside the books), would it be creepy ?
