Finished 2 non fictions over the weekend
- The ritual effect (
) : It was okay, some interesting idea but too long with too many repetitions/anecdotes. 300 pages of what should have been a very good short essay/long article in The New Yorker.
- Food rules ( ) - Found it triggering (the idea of rules in diet 
) in a way but mostly very boring (the "rules" could have been in one page : don't eat process food/eat a mediteranean diet). It's only 80 pages but it's 80 pages too much.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I have a TBR pile as long as my arm. I'm currently working through 'My Friends' by Fredrik Backman - what am I missing?! I'm on the verge of not finishing, but it has so many 5* reviews, I feel like i'm going to miss something or it's just going to get good? I'm on chapter 18 of 59 .... someone explain the hype?!
i liked it but backman’s writing style has really started to grate on me. i hate all the baiting and switching he does, and the little montages of like someone many years ago told him [insert odd proverb type thing here] and it was only NOW he realised how true it was.
he’s talented but i think my friends will be last of his i read 🫠 i really liked beartown but he almost certainly dragged that out for too long too.
I just don't seem to like his writing style.
I finally am starting "War of Wyverns" by S.F. Williamson. I absolutely loved the first but as I bought the waterstones exclusive paperback of the first, I was waiting on the same for the second. I am a little annoyed though as I can't take the sticker off it, without it damaging the cover.

I haven't read this one yet. Love Fredrick Backman but I don't know how many more of his books I will enjoy, he has a very particular style...when it's good it's great, when it's bad it's mawkish and a bit simplistic.
I've started Moderation by Elaine Castillo and so far it's just.....nonsense, is the only way I can describe it?
A lot of long rambling,backstory for the protagonist, any relevant parts of which should be being revealed throughout the story not infodumped in one go at the beginning.
Also, some really unnecessarily graphic references to the online content she moderates (hence the title), which seem to be inserted only for shock value.
The first chapter seems to suggest that the setting is some sort of technocratic dystopia, but this immediately disappears.
It's....bizarre. I know someone else on here didn't like it.

I didn’t mind it cos I’m big into my lit fic but I do agree that it seemed to drift around between different genres without settling on a set storyline. The ending was very anticlimactic and not remotely believable and different threads kept being picked up and dropped.
Bought a Lisa Jewell paperback that I hadn't seen before when I was in Tesco last week.
Turns out I downloaded on my Kindle 4 years ago and not read it.
Not my favourite of hers, I worked out the perp quite early on, not as good as None of This is True or The Family Upstairs

I definitely feel the same. I think Jewell is one of those writers who just keeps getting better and better and ive loved her last few books.
