My mum gave me Dr Zhivago to read on a dodgy Air Fuji flight to an island in Micronesia. I think she must have seriously dislike me at that time. We were taking our lives in our hands getting on that plane. I was then taking my life in my own hands with that book and this flight that I thought was going to crash soon.

Awful.
Quite honestly the plane crashing would be preferable to having to read Doctor Zhivago

The Works is just such a disappointment these days. I haven't bought a book there for well over a year. There just isn't anything.
I couldn't agree more! I have been lucky with charity shop finds before Christmas so I'm still going through my tbr pile but someone has recently shared this with me - https://books.rockslide.ca/author?data=author&sort_param=stored There are a few books on there that I want to read so hopefully might be useful to you guys. I hope it's OK to share links on here?

I'm intrigued to watch this. Were the other characters more like you imagined them?
I posted this on another thread…..

Rachel’s Holiday is one of my favourite books, though it’s been years since I read the series. I don’t remember the Mammy being a cold nasty b*tch. I remember her as an overbearing Irish Mammy who could also be funny but loving. They overlapped each sister story which kind of worked but omg it was miserable and depressing. There were lots of laugh out loud moments when I read the books, this didn’t translate at all to tv. Yes the books deal with serious issues but that’s where Helen’s one liners and Mammy and Daddy Walsh brought some laughs. Or I’m remembering all wrong…..

I don’t reread many books but I do plan on rereading these, before even knowing there was a TV series. I think there was a book came out a couple years ago, (Again Rachel) and that’s when I thought I should really reread them

I loved Anybody Out There. Makes me cry every time I read it. Haven’t watched the tv show and probably won’t, I find the actors don’t fit my mental picture and it’s very distracting!

I think she just wrote them at her peak and had the benefit of a long term storyline for them all and managed to write that really well - hard to get a prologue, full story and epilogue for each character in just one book after all. I will probably read everything she releases but the Walsh books feel a little like family, I feel I ‘know’ them so well!

Hmm that's really interesting! I haven't read all the books but completely agree I associate them with a witty humorous take on some really tough life moments so its a shame if they didnt capture that. I'll probably still watch it as I am intrigued but at least going into it with lower expectations!

I finished The Safekeep last night. Such a beautiful book! I listened to the audio and I think it worked really well, the story really hooked me in but the writing was beautiful. 5 ⭐

Just finished 'The Daughter of Time' by Josephine Tey.

I had high expectations. I'm a nut for a murder mystery, and this was voted the greatest crime novel of all time by the Crime Writer's Association. The concept sounded incredible - a bored, bedbound detective puts his skills to work to solve the mystery of the Princes in the Tower (a period of history I'm also a little obsessed with)...

ANYWAY...

Good GOD that was a pile of tedious CRAP. I can't give it one star because it isn't BADLY written, but I really, really want to. So disappointed.

I hated this too, for the same reasons! It felt promising, and then was one-note, no nuance. No need to ponder over the mystery any longer, historians - my guy is really good at sussing things out from paintings

You’re not remembering wrong, I totally agree with everything you said. The warmth and humour have been removed, and that’s what made the books so special for me. Maybe I’d enjoy it more if I hadn’t read them and could just enjoy the series for what it is.

It was barely even a story, just a 200-page rant from a Richard III stan. I'd really like to know which historian pissed in her cornflakes.

I’ve only watched one episode and not read the books but wasn’t too bothered by the series. I’ll watch the rest at some point but it didn’t hook me. Felt a bit ‘try hard’

Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico

Really interesting choice of narrator and narrative. It felt more of a story about the city and society with the main characters being sort of empty vessels to allow the narrator to explore some big themes and questions.

I think I would get a lot more from this if I was an expat or living in a larger city, though it did make me reflect on the impacts I’ve seen immigration have on my community and relationships as well

I’m not sure if it’s genuinely that these international authors are doing something quite innovative or unique or whether there’s an influence from their cultures but it’s really interesting to explore how a story can be told from these different perspectives and styles of narration.

posting my february reads now because there is no way i’m finishing the invisible life of addie larue before tomorrow. not that it’s a BAD book, i’m just finding it such a slog 🤣

evenings and weekends - oisin mckenna ⭐⭐⭐⭐
common goal - rachel reid 🏒
all the lovers in the night-mieko kawakami ⭐⭐⭐⭐
role model - rachel reid 🏒🏒🏒
the long game - rachel reid 🏒🏒🏒🏒

for my fellow heated rivalry fans: if you’re going to read the books, only read heated rivalry, role model and the long game. the rest are simply not very good (and even with the “good” ones i score purely based on ilya himself) 🤣

I appreciate the intel! I skipped to Heated Rivalry on your prior recommendation, no regrets (and even that felt like a bit of a slog at times! But Ilya was worth it)

The jump scare I got when I thought you were getting ahead of the wrap up then I realised it’s the end of the month tomo!! It’s a short month, I shouldn’t be this surprised lol

ilya makes the entire series worth it. i don’t get how the writing is so mid most of the time but out of nowhere she just created this amazing character 🤣 anytime he popped up in the other books i was like “a STAR has arrived 😍

the long game is, imo, a huge step up in writing quality so i would recommend it.

Excellent news! I have already reserved a copy at the library. Honestly, the beginning of Heated Rivalry sent me straight back to my avid fanfic days, worth it even for that moment.

same 😍 i think that’s honestly the reason why i find the books so endearing: it’s pure enemies to lovers in secret while they won’t admit their true feelings. it hits ALL my fanfic needs! 🤣

My February reading

Writers and lovers - lily king. 3/5 I liked it but it’s not one that will stay with me
Two can play - Ali hazlewood. 3/5 very typical Ali hazlewood but it didn’t grab me as much as her others and with it being shorter, I felt it lacked character development.
The dead romantics - Ashley Poston. 3/5. In theory this would be 3.5 if it was possible but I can’t see me reading it again. It was nice though!
I think we’ve been here before - Suzy Krause. I finished this last night and rated it 2/5, I loved Valencia and valentine or whatever it’s called and have read it a few times but this seemed like it really dragged. Maybe it’s me though.

Also started wild love by Elsie silver and was going to dnf but the idea annoyed me too much so I’m trying to read it when I have five minutes here and there even though I really dislike it. 67% through!
