Has anyone read My Friends? I’ve had it from the library for ages but it’s just not grabbing me.

YES!

My biggest regret is not dnf'ing Doctor Zhivago.

What an absolute pile of rit of a book. A waste of time. A waste of words. A waste of paper.
I was going to then it sort of got personal between me and Pasternak and I refused to be beaten by him 🤣 I thought Yuri was such a bland character, I can’t believe he abandoned both wives and children. And he never went to search for his first wife and children after they were deported!
The way the women are written are a bit one dimensional with Tonya being all ‘oh I don’t mind that you went off and had an affair, I totally understand!!!’ And Lara just whined all the time. The back of my book says ‘the greatest love story ever told’ and I feel I should be entitled to compensation from the trade description act.

i am loving these posts 🤣

i read it ages ago and HATED IT and now feel very validated. i can’t believe they managed to make an epic film out of it AND that it is in any way referred to as a romance. yuri might be one of the worst male leads in all of classic fiction (behind marius pontmercy).

Not read Les Mis but I agree that Yuri is the worst! Selfish, bland, he’s in love with being miserable. He’d definitely be writing tit poetry in a gentrified coffee house drinking only plant based milk if he were alive today. Like his one true love is whisked away under false pretence but he won’t go with her because he hates the man who took her?! And even when she’s going over the horizon out of sight he just STANDS THERE and LAMENTS her leaving him. Get on a bleeping horse Yuri and trot on after her you plonker.

Reading John Marrs latest book, Dead in the Water, and omg is it a slog. I usually race through his books and am a huge fan (i have always preferred his speculative books over his normal thrillers) but this is awful and so repetitive.

It wasn't my favourite Backman. His writing, to me, was beautiful as always but it felt a bit formulaic and like his heart wasn't really in it. I always struggle with the first 20% of his books when I wonder WTF is going on, but even when I figured everything out, I didn't really care about the characters that much.

I've never read Dr Zhivago (probably won't bother now) but I remember watching the TV miniseries from a few years back and thinking "Is that it?" at the end so this all tracks 😂

My mum gave me Dr Zhivago to read on a dodgy Air Fuji flight to an island in Micronesia. I think she must have seriously dislike me at that time. We were taking our lives in our hands getting on that plane. I was then taking my life in my own hands with that book and this flight that I thought was going to crash soon.

Awful.

Imagine that was the last book you ever read. Yikes.
(I haven’t read it but it seems pretty unanimous here that it’s awful)
