Books #4 the book lovers thread!

I feel like I’m in a bit of a reading slump. I have given the last few books I’ve read 3* and felt a bit ‘meh’ about them all.

About to start Detransition, Baby

I’m the same! Mostly 2 and 3 star books lately. My next read will be one from the Eddie Flynn series so that should give me my reading mojo back!

Finished Karen Swan, I do enjoy (most!) of her books so it was a solid 4/5

Just started the truth must dazzle gradually by Helen Cullen.

Reading “The idea of you”, not loving it. Seems kinda YA to me, maybe not, but yeah.

I got like that a few days ago which is why I’ve not been very active here I’m trying to go back over books I started, got 3 chapters in and didn’t finish (awful habit) and I did this with the road trip by Beth O’Leary a few weeks ago, so I went back for seconds,
couldn’t get into it, at all, so it knocked me off reading a bit.

I then started another older one, Karen Swan - The summer without you, knowing I love her books but somehow hadn’t finished it and I’m loving it!
That usually gets me out of a slump. Going with someone I know I’ll enjoy. Xx

I finished The Road Trip this morning. Like all Beth's books it was predictable but alright

I wouldn't pay more than 99p for one of her books

I have also recently finished all of the Bridgertons books, pretty predictable but enjoyable.

I feel your slumps tattlers. I am the same. I have read a fair bit recently but I I not compelled to pick up my book to find out what happens next. They have all been 2/3 stars.

I am halfway through The End of Her by Shari Lapena, it seems to be chapters and chapters of the same thing

I am also listening to The Cuckoo's calling on auduobook

And have just started Constance. Hopefully this is better than some of my recent reads!

I finished the Five by Hallie Rubenhold on Audible last night. A solid 4 out of 5 from me. Totally different to anything Id usually read. Worked well on audio format for me.

Im halfway through Ghosts, Im actually more involved in the storyline of her Dad than the romantic side of it. Having had a close family member suffer the same illness I feel for Nina so much and feel the title is perhaps ambiguous.

I bought the paperback of the most recent Cormoran Strike book Troubled Blood last night. Its absolutely huge, over 1000 pages. I think I'm gonna struggle to actually hold it I bought the last one as a paper back but I bought it as soon as it came out at the airport so while it was a paper back it was the same size as a hardback. I actually really enjoy these books and Im so glad its a series that started recently and I read from the beginning. As soon as I know something has 20 books in a series or even a tv show which already has 6 or 7 seasons before I started it really puts me off.

@HoGi I borrowed The Flat Share from the library and just couldn't be bothered finishing it. Not a fan of her books but seems plenty are on the old Booktok

I quite enjoyed the flatshare but that might have been lockdown madness

I don't get why so many booktok/bookstagram accounts love her.

The back of The Road Trip says she has another book out in Spring 22, so she is churning out one a year!

. As soon as I know something has 20 books in a series or even a tv show which already has 6 or 7 seasons before I started it really puts me off.

I love it when I discover a book that is part of a series of 20, I will read nothing else until I have completed it! Although I will start rationing them when I only have a couple left.

I just cant commit to it. I did all of the David Baldacci Amos Decker books. I can start if there are only a few with view to it expanding but it feels like too much to start and know there are x books. What if I dont like them then I feel compelled to read them all.

A work colleague of mine loves the DCI Jack Logan books.

Im glad I watched Dexter as it aired as there was some absolute rit in amongst tv gold. If I had it to binge Id have given up.

I would totally be up for it!!! I have a few fixed books in this months TBR but i can defo get another in, plus it'll be motivating to get a wriggle on with my current reads!

I finished reading The Perfect Family by Shalini Boland an loved it, gave it 5 stars. The book progressed well and really sped up in the second half and kept me guessing with twists and turns right up till the very end. Only slight negative I would say (though not enough for me to mark a star off) was I felt the very ending was almost rushed I got to the last page and was like oh is that it finished. It wrapped up the story but felt it maybe could have stretched out another chapter or 2. Fab read all round though.

Going to try The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish now but not holding out much hope. I tried reading Our House recently and couldn't quite take to it but will give this one a go (I stupidly bought both at the same time without reading anything by the author).

and I’m being overly critical because her publishers seem to have a a deal with the main sellers to continuously push her to the forefront when she has a book released, I didn’t like the flat share (I know many did!) and the switch was cute enough, I was in the mood for a chewinggum book so I read it, but didn’t exactly put it down wishing there was more
the road trip was exhausting, I found the last 1/3 I was just willing it to end so I could move on.
her writing isn’t improving as she goes on and neither are her storylines so all I see is cookie cutter author now (yes I make terms up )

I'm enjoying this new one a lot, but it most certainly not chick lit.
glad to be reading something with a bit more bite.

ive come to the conclusion I don’t like her books either I’ve tried a few but I just can’t get into them. She’s also someone who seems to release one every few weeks, or maybe that’s just because I see her so much on amazon etc

Reading loads whilst away didn't work out So I've finished Constance today. I know it was a few people's picks this month so my thoughts are below.

Spoiler: Constance book review

I think it was an interesting premise. Felt very fresh and unique. I liked a few of the twists but some I felt were pointless. It was a good book and I am glad I read it. But won't be one that stays with me forever. I liked Con as a character and thought it was well written. I would probably read the second book due in 2022 if it was cheap enough.

Next up I am going for the other black girl. I picked it up yesterday on kindle for less than £2 so I'm happy!

I totally agree she is very basic and cookie cutter author!

Unfortunately she seems to have a following who will buy whatever has her name in it so I can't see publishers dropping her any time soon
