Wuthering Heights is really hard work. I just have had no motivation to read it lol so I think I'm just gonna be naughty and read the dialogue so I can finish it.

I'm reading to all the boys I loved before on Kindle just for a bit of lightness. My heads a bit fried this week so can't be doing with anything too deep

Haha, we had to read and digest, discuss and watch a play on Wuthering Heights at school, back in 1971. So you have my sympathy.

I did, I read the beauty and the beast one. I didn’t really enjoy it to be fair! X

It’s strikes me as an interesting idea in theory, “what happened next” more so than a retelling of the same story could be fun, but in reality it might be a bit….. YA’ish.

Is anyone else confused by today’s kindle daily deals? There are 20 books so I thought a special promotion was going on, but looking through them some aren’t even cheap. The most expensive is £9.49, which is very pricey for any kindle book in my opinion. Maybe it’s a glitch?

None of them look appealing anyway. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi is 99p but I found Transcendent Kingdom underwhelming so not eager to read more. Midnight in Chernobyl is also 99p which I do recommend, but with a warning that it’s intense and you might feel the need to take notes (I certainly did ). The level of detail about the disaster and its context is amazing.

It’s happened more and more in the last few months, where they’re not just 99p anymore. I did not love homegoing and didn’t get the hype! I also have midnight in Chernobyl on my TBR and I will get round to reading it this summer

I think it's a glitch - the books that were on offer yesterday are still listed under deals, but have returned to their full price

So Im more than half way through The Five now. About half way through victim number 4 Kate.

I am finding it interesting but I also feel like every victim has these huge stories of tragic events. How much of that can all be true? Or is it a sign of the times and Im just oblivious. As I said previously Im not a fan of historical stuff in any media form. I watched Bridgerton last year just because it was recommended to me but thats where I draw the line. Cant be doing with Downton Abbey etc.

Like someone else said it does seem like a lot of artistic licence has been used as Im a bit dubious at how accurate record keeping could have been, like the workhouse logs etc.

Overall v informative though and I would recommend it so far.

It was me that said there is probably an awful lot of poetic licence in it.
That said, my great grandmother was born in Whitechapel in 1888, so during The Ripper’s rein of terror.
My Dad had told me that she’d had an awful childhood and would never talk about it.
Through historic records I have since discovered that her father left for the USA either before or just after she was born. At 2 months old she was in the workhouse with her mother and older sister. Before she was a year old her mother had deserted her there so her childhood was living in the workhouse and children’s homes. For some reason her sister remained with her mother. So yes, records do still exist and the workhouse records for London can be quite detailed as are the parish relief/settlement records.
However, when the author wrote sentences such as “Kate probably frequented Mr Smith‘s shop where she likely met her future husband...” I think we have to assume that is probably fiction rather than fact.

I loved Shuggie Bain. I feel like Ive said it so many times on this thread. For me while bleak, it was a story of love. I thought it was well written and the character of Shuggie so delicate but complex.

I cannot wait to read his next book. I have pre ordered it. I have watched a few interviews with Douglas Stuart and theyre really good. I have linked one here before I think.

Spoiler: Thoughts

I’ll put everything in a spoiler in case people don’t want to know there’s a twist. There are actually two twists that did leave me like, “oooooh”. HOWEVER, it’s one of those books where there was actually a lot to it that you wouldn’t necessarily remember being said and so you kind of need to re read it knowing the twist, for it to all add up.

If anyone else has read this I’d be interested to hear whether you thought the same? Overall a good book and worth a read.

I can't believe it's been nominated for the Womens Prize. I have trust issues with prizes as some really bad books make it onto their list

That makes me reconsider reading Homegoing! I did like the story of TK and love a bit of navel gazing but also felt like it was very circular. I’m one of those people who generally like the nominees for the big book prizes but can’t believe TK and No One Is Talking About This have been shortlisted, neither were great imo.

I agree! I liked the bits that went into the past about her family and thought that had a lot of potential but the rest just didn't work for me. Definitely try Homegoing while it's 99p! Miles better than TK imo, and one of my favourite books.

About to start Detransition, Baby

I got like that a few days ago which is why I’ve not been very active here I’m trying to go back over books I started, got 3 chapters in and didn’t finish (awful habit) and I did this with the road trip by Beth O’Leary a few weeks ago, so I went back for seconds,
couldn’t get into it, at all, so it knocked me off reading a bit.

I then started another older one, Karen Swan - The summer without you, knowing I love her books but somehow hadn’t finished it and I’m loving it!
That usually gets me out of a slump. Going with someone I know I’ll enjoy. Xx
