I completed one last month on Kindle and, because it sucked all the joy out of reading, I've vowed not to get caught up in another one. Quite proud of my achievements but probably didn't need an app to tell me that I was reading a lot

I finished Beartown last week and it's really stayed with me... I've got the second one ready for my holiday next week and am having to stop myself from picking it up
Just saw something on The Queens Reading Room insta that made me think. He was saying that men dont read books by women and made me think do I read books by male authors?
So I did a quick count up and only 15/80 have been by male authors this year and a couple of those were co written with a woman. What about you guys, do you do a mix or be like me just pick up a book without really thinking about the sex of the author?

Like you, I don't really think about the author when I pick up a book. I've had a quick look and of the 53 books I've read so far this year, 13 are by male authors.
I know I tend towards female authors, not consciously. I've read 129 books so far this year. I've read 72 different female authors, 15 different male authors, one NB, and one married couple. Suppose it would have helped for me to count repeat authors, but it's too late now
I'm pretty sure the only repeat male author I've read this year is Alexis Hall.I do read a lot of fantasy and romance, and I think these fields tend to be dominated by female authors.
Oooh I love this debate! I think it is probably true that men -on the whole - don’t read books by women (with notable exceptions, such as classics and very popular books like Harry Potter etc). I think it could largely be to do with marketing though and how many books written by women are marketed towards women even if they don’t fall into the typical ‘chick lit’ category (hate that term but it seems the best way to describe it).
I don’t really like thriller books written by men (on the whole - obvs some exceptions). I have often wondered if that is more to do with shared experiences and female authors being able to more accurately recognise and describe exactly what other women are scared of?

Thats really interesting. I agree with male thrillers i dont much like reading violence and there seems to be more blood and gore, but conversely I prefer crime/police procedurals by male authors. I also really like Irish fiction but equally between male and female. That said I'm not really conscious of picking a book by author sex, I just scroll through my library and choose a book!
I just finished 'Someone You Can Build A Nest In' and I agree with a lot of the reviews that it was a surprise to 'realise' it's written by a male author. It handled sapphic (sort of...non-humans are involved but definitely female ones) relationships really well.
My reading definitely skews more towards female authors, but my favourite genre is mystery and men write a lot of great ones (even if Agatha is the Queen).

I’ve had The Winners on my TBR shelf for 2 years. I’ve known it’s there but couldn’t bring myself to read it because then it’ll be over. Took the plunge this week & I’m trying to eke it out. Will be devastated when I finish it. I can’t put into words how much II finished Beartown last week and it's really stayed with me... this trilogy because on paper it’s not my typical read but I know it will have a special place in my heart forever! Enjoy your holiday & your read 
I don't decide whether or not to read a book based on the gender of the author, but saying that I would say I tend to read more books by female authors. So far this year I've read 14 books by male authors, out of 76 in total. Interesting!
Finished Secret Asset by Stella Rimington last night - stayed up past my bedtime to finish it. My mum recently discovered her back catalogue and this is the second, both really good thrillers. She was the ex-Head of MI5 and is a really good author IMO. Nice short chapters and a clever plot. She's written quite a few and although kind of a series they sit well on their own.
Got some solo travel time this weekend so looking forward to some uninterrupted reading time on the train
just need to decide what snacks to purchase and make sure I get this report finished today so I don't have to spend tonight's journey catching up on work!

Assuming most of us in this thread are women, you'll probably get a more reasonable response to this question. I tend to read more women authors (haven't done a proper check, just an educated guess) but there's no rhyme or reason to it.
If I wasn't reading mostly thrillers at the moment, I would probably come across more male authors, which tends to happen when I'm in the mood for dystopia or literary fiction.
I definitely read more female authors, but not consciously. Like you, I read what takes my fancy without thinking about it.
I read more books by female authors i think but i don't find that too surprising. I'm pretty sure there are more female authors in particular in the genres i read. I don't consciously pick female authors though, gender of the author doesn't come near my decision to read a book or not
It is a really interesting question. I saw something about this on either the Fiction Matters or Novel Pairings insta account a while back (Sara from FM is involved in both accounts so can’t remember which it was and can’t for the life of me find it now!) She used to be a high school English teacher and was talking about how boys are never really encouraged to read books by female authors because there’s an expectation that they won’t be about topics boys are interested in. On the flip side girls are encouraged to read both male and female authors as men are seen to write about more universal themes. (I might be misquoting but that was the gist!)
Thinking about it, I did several courses at uni looking specifically at female writers so potentially there is some truth in the assumption women write about different things to men, but does it naturally follow that those things aren’t of interest to male readers?
I personally don’t think I consciously chose female authors over male but I know if I had to list my top 5 authors they would all be women. Of the 35 books I’ve read this year only 11 are by male authors so it seems like I do prefer female.
Without doing it intentionally I read more books by male authors. Unless they are next in a detective series4, I just pick books on the blurb on the back or on recommendations/chat on here.
I have just realised that without doing it intentionally all the books I have read so far this month are by female authors.
