Call me an idiot but I've recently discovered you can listen to as many audiobooks as you like on Spotify!!! Beats the paltry one book a month on Audible. I've had a student Spotify for ages so didn't qualify for the books, now its reverted to full price membership I can listen to as many as I like!!!!!!! I am very excited about this. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I will listen to literally anything.

Have they lifted the 15 hours a month limit? I had to ration mine as I was maxing out too early in the month and leaving myself with unintentional cliffhangers (because of course I wouldn’t pay to top up).
You get 15 hours a month. My only recommendation would be to choose books shorter than that and try not to relisten to any parts because that'll use up your time. If I want to read more than one book or something longer than 15 hours, I'll strategically start close to my billing date so I have no or a short wait before I can continue listening.
You can buy 10 extra hours for £9.99 and they rollover and last 12 months. I've also just seen you can pay £8.99 for an extra 15 hours every month too (30 hours total), that must be new.
But I'd say just try to stick to the 15 hours because £11.99 for music, podcasts and an audiobook isn't bad at all.
Thanks for that, I didn't realise there was a limit. I've actually been listening to a book before bed and have fallen asleep with it on so that's wasted a few hours
Some of the books I have suggested @Eureka aren't that long.

Mine too especially when this copy holds so many personal memories for me as my late godmother gave it to me.
i don’t know where else to say this but daisy ridley’s actual real life husband being cast as the lead in the love hypothesis movie is so meta that i can’t cope with it 
I don’t pick a book based on male or female author. I don’t mind either a female or male protagonist. Last years favourite book was Demon Copperhead with a male MC, and I also enjoyed Caledonian Road which is written by a man and male MC. Of this years 15 books read only 1 is written by a man (but it’s my favourite so far - Rules of Civility). I’m currently reading my 16th book and that is a male author and then I’ll be reading Beartown so a third male author.

However I got over myself & answered hypothetically & I’m an adventurous reader which I’d say is pretty spot on!

Mrs Porter Calling is part of a series so if you do go for that then start with Dear Mrs Bird which is book 1. I’ve read the first 2 of the series and really enjoyed them both. They are cosy, comforting reads for the most part, but there are some quite serious and emotional parts too. (No spoilers but they’re set in London during WWII so you can probably work out what the serious bits are about!)I've just done a book quiz and got this result and list of books I would like. I very rarely read books written by men. Men too often have an overly pompous writing style and I can’t bear the thought of insidious mansplaining
I like the flat sort of humour that’s popular in women’s fiction too. Female voices just appeal to me. There are some exceptions to this on my Kindle, the Poldark novels and Frank & Red.
I didn't know he was married to her! Very Meta! Saw a photo on IG and I did think he seems well cast...i don’t know where else to say this but daisy ridley’s actual real life husband being cast as the lead in the love hypothesis movie is so meta that i can’t cope with it
Is that thing on instagram opinion or fact? I only ask because my husband definitely reads more books by women but obviously that's a sample of one, so am curious to know if he's an outlier or it's just someone's opinion!
I probably read more by women but not on purpose - more to do with the fact that a lot of the stuff I read is romance or romantasy which has more female authors.
Can’t comment on the instagram post but do remember the author gender preference as fact mentioned in The Authority Gap (great book!), it’s something along the lines of women typically read an even gender split whereas men read ~80-90% men.
My 2025 ratio is currently 12 men / 38 women.
