It IS that one... all i can recall of it was some bloke from out of town not really being into cakes.. I didnt buy it and it's not free so must have been a library find.. I like reading Xmas ones but unless its Trisha Ashley or Jenny Colgan ie guaranteed bangers,, i try not to buy
I’m 20% in at the moment and enjoying it. I find Amor Towles books are maybe a little slow but absorb you by the end. He's a really skilled writer. This has been on my Kindle TBR for ages so interested to know your final verdict on it. Glad it’s looking good so far!

Yes it’s a series but he seems to release them almost as fast as Freida McFadden. They’re usually different plots and they’re fairly short. They’re quite well written so they’re easy to read quite fast but they’re fairly basic and not winning any literary awards!I'm assuming that's the same author for thoseAre they planning on writing a book for all the tourist locations in Britain?!

. Did they differ much plot wise?
Once I knew I was going to write Strange Meeting, it actually fell into place remarkably easily. I suppose there are two ways a writer can tackle such a subject. One way is to write a very long, panoramic historical novel, attempting to capture the whole sweep of the war. But there was no way I could have done that or wanted to: I have never been interested in that kind of book, neither as a writer nor as a reader.
The alternative was to write a novel of the war in microcosm, to create a small world within the great one of the whole war. So the book is really about two young men and their meeting, their relationship, set in a few places, over a few short months in one particular small corner of the Great War
Yeah every book of hers is one she could've finished about 3 miseries earlierI finished The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah last night and, while I didn’t hate it, I think I'm going to have to put her in the “authors everyone else loves but I don’t get” box along with Sally Rooney.
I just can’t cope with the relentless misery she heaps on her characters. Maybe if there was a bit more light and shade or if it wasn’t so obvious that things were going to go wrong I might like it more, but when you know every scenario is going to end in the worst possible way I stop caring! I quite liked The Great Alone at first but trudged through the last 3rd of it.
Disclaimer - The Women is still on my Amazon wish list so I reserve the right to buy it if it ever goes on a 99p offer and I become falsely optimistic that it might be the book that makes me love her!![]()

I do think The Great Alone is particularly miserable tbf.I finished The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah last night and, while I didn’t hate it, I think I'm going to have to put her in the “authors everyone else loves but I don’t get” box along with Sally Rooney.

I haven't read any of her books and i do get this but to be brutally honest most ppls lives especially these days are not filled with joy... I can see why it might be a bit much to read about especially for those who read for escapismI do think The Great Alone is particularly miserable tbf.
The location/setting definitely adds to the bleakness.I do think The Great Alone is particularly miserable tbf.
It's more that the books just pile on misery after misery and after you think that must be the worst of it done for the character their whole family dies, they get cancer, lose an eye and go bankrupt. Like come on now.I haven't read any of her books and i do get this but to be brutally honest most ppls lives especially these days are not filled with joy... i dont know.. i look at my own life and thats just one thing after another and i am sure i am not the only one on here from the looks of things but yeah good point its a bit too far tbhIt's more that the books just pile on misery after misery and after you think that must be the worst of it done for the character their whole family dies, they get cancer, lose an eye and go bankrupt. Like come on now.
Exaggeration obviously, not an actual storyline.![]()
