Just left 66 book club. I queued for no longer than 15 mins and got parking easily. I figured I could afford to get a few books with such a good discount. £85 later…

My mum used to have a different book in every room

She would read at few pages on something while cooking, a different book in the lounge and another by her bed.

ETA mum also said she could refuse us toys/sweets etc. but she could never refuse us a book. So I quickly developed book dragon tendencies

What didn’t I get… I’m just grabbing lunch before heading down to the rugby. I’ll post my haul when I get home tonight. Probably whilst wondering why the hell I bought most of them They did have a load of classics with beautiful covers that would make lovely presents.

A warehouse of books probably isn’t the best plan for someone as book impulsive as me! It’s quite overwhelming, I had to miss out some of the aisles as I simply couldn’t have carried anymore. There were people wandering about with just 2 or 3 books. How?!?!

I am still clearing my Kindle tbr and am embarrassed to say a few of my favourite books have been purchased from 2018/19. Yes 6/7 years ago. Buried under a pile of other books have been some real treasures.

All very decent books. I gave then all four or five stars, I'll Be Gone in the Dark was especially good.

My March reads, and in my usual easily pleased style I enjoyed them all in their own way. The Hunger Games was a reread (on audible) and probably my favourite.

Yes! Some historical fiction has me looking up maps and names of streets to see if they still exist and what it looks like now. Lots of side quests! I sometimes have to limit myself to searching online at the end of each chapter rather than as I go because it can be distracting. So many lovely rabbit holes to fall down

I'm currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo and have googled so many things! If I'm reading something historical I always Google fashions so I can picture them properly, but I've been googling 19th century french banking systems, 19th century french telegraph systems, what people's titles mean, street names and what they would have looked like then, The Rome festival.... I've also got an additional list of things to look up when I'm finished and some questions to ask in case the book doesn't resolve them!!

I love it when I'm reading a book that is set in a real place, like a small village so I can go on street view and 'walk' around! (I'm looking at you DCI Logan and DCI Grim books!)

Recently read

Let Me Lie by Claire Mackintosh. Not a bad book, just a predictable Claire book. Blah , blah.

White Lies by Lucy Dawson. This was closer to being a 4*. I enjoyed it, but I did realise it is my stereotypical thriller book with a formulaic sorry line.

At The Quiet Edge by Victoria Helen Stone. Not sure how this got published. Terrible book. DNF at about 28%, it hurt my eyes.

Well I was saving my Christmas waterstones voucher but may have just spent it all. Hoping that as the books will arrive apparently randomly due to publication dates I can slip some past the boyfriend who considers them clutter (philistine that he is)

Am I the only person who really doesn’t like the romance books with the really cartoony image pictures on the front ? I follow a few “booktokers” and even the ones who have really similar taste to me (contemporary and literary fiction generally) but who read broader genres like romance and romantasy, seem to love the types of cover that I see and immediately think that it will be crap.

I prefer it to ones with real people, because if I don't find the man on the cover attractive I can't get into the character

My rating system - not that anyone asked or cares - is 3 stars is a good, solid read. I have thought about changing it though since I think Goodreads ratings may affect authors (?)

For me, 0 is for DNFs
1 is 'why on earth did I finish this'
2 is for poor
3 is for solid, enjoyed somewhat
4 is great, learned something, enjoyed a lot, good writing etc
5 is fantastic and will re-read

So a 3 is good. I wanted to differentiate between a 4 and a 5 because there are lots of books i think are amazing in the moment but forget about later and won't reread, and then there are those that have a profound effect or are just so well written or funny that I know I will reread them.

I finished The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah last night and, while I didn’t hate it, I think I'm going to have to put her in the “authors everyone else loves but I don’t get” box along with Sally Rooney.

I just can’t cope with the relentless misery she heaps on her characters. Maybe if there was a bit more light and shade or if it wasn’t so obvious that things were going to go wrong I might like it more, but when you know every scenario is going to end in the worst possible way I stop caring! I quite liked The Great Alone at first but trudged through the last 3rd of it.

Disclaimer - The Women is still on my Amazon wish list so I reserve the right to buy it if it ever goes on a 99p offer and I become falsely optimistic that it might be the book that makes me love her!

You want to feel good about it... I have 814 unread books on my kindle. I think I may have a problem

March wrap-up

3 from my Kindle list and 3 audio books (the 7th book was a new purchase for book club, not technically counted as reducing kindle library)

I enjoyed them all except Nightbitch. Nightbitch was bizarre and I skim read it.

My aim for April is to hopefully only read from my Kindle library.
