books acquired! the cover of blue sisters is so beautiful that i want to have it out in display

also shoutout to the man in waterstones who held up long island to the girl behind the till and said “i want this, but in paperback” and when she explained it would be at least another nine months given that the hardback is out today then held up another book and said “this is a paperback” as if that would help matters

A couple of weeks ago I was in Waterstones waiting to pay and a man comes along to the other till from the direction of inside the store with a copy of Dune in his hand, puts it down on counter and looks at bookseller, bookseller scans it and asks for £9.99.. man is outraged as he ‘didn’t want to buy it again’ - turns out he wanted a refund despite saying nothing and not producing a receipt. The audacity of the bookseller not to be a mind reader.

So I've finished The Ministry of Time and I was so whelmed by it. It just left me feeling so indifferent. It was fine. Not awful. Not great. But it just didn't hold my attention the way I thought it would based on the synopsis. Pure average.

I love ACOTAR and fourth wing etc for getting adults back into fantasy.

My bookclub were mocking me (in a nice way) for my love of ahem fairy porn. Then we had a new member so did a round the table of our favourite books from childhood. Most people's favourites were fantasy! I said you loved fantasy as a kid why don't you try it again as an adult? It doesn't have to be wars and boring, it could be spicy! They were all surprised but agreed to give them a bash and are now converts

Sounds like a Books evening out this weekend.

I have just finished Wild Houses by Colin Barrett, I know we have a few Irish lit fans here and this is just that. I gave it 4.5, it was a fun read. Comedy, mixed with thriller mixed with a teeny bit of violence and some loyalty thrown in for good measure.

I recommend it.

Just finished 'Confessions of a 40 something f*** up' by Alexandra Potter and I must say I really liked this, Enjoyable easy read & believable. 10/10

I’m really enjoying the writing style in Demon Copperhead, loving the mix of serious and funny, and the story just flows

Demon Copperhead is my favourite book I've read this year so far. I was put off by the length of it initially. I was so emotionally attached to it that I even convinced my husband to read it and he never reads any books. We had driven through the Appalachian region at Christmas. So that was a draw for him.

Right now, I'm reading A God In Ruins. Love the writing. It's taking me forever as I've had a hard time getting into the headspace for reading. Not the book's fault!

Blue Sisters just arrived from the UK yesterday. It isn't available here yet. I'd ordered a paperback version of it, but Blackwells emailed me to say that they were prohibited from sending the paperback to the US and sent a hardcover instead free of charge. I am shocked that the hardcover pricetag on the book is £9.99. I haven't converted it to $ but it seems very cheap.

Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite books too.

I find it so fascinating how we can all read the same text, take something so wildly different from it and never fall out about it. I am certain this is the only thread on Tattle where we can disagree so massively on a subject and there not be 12 pages of "waah you are wrong."

I have gone back to the beginning of the Cormoran Strike books. Never read HP but I love this series. On book two right now The Silkworm. I am finding all little tidbits that I missed before. Such chunky books too. The further into the series you get the longer the book. One is 1,000 pages plus. Perfect to get lost in.

Yes, this is also one of my favourite things about this thread! I feel like fundamentally, we are all book lovers and that's more important than having the "right" take on a book.

I’ve lurked here on and off but as usual have struggled to keep up I’ve had a string of average reads recently…

The Marriage Act by John Marrs. Right, I officially give up with Marrs, we really just don’t gel. I find his dystopian books ridiculous with massive gaping holes that distract me all the way through. Unlikeable two-dimensional characters too…

The Coworker by Frieda McFadden. I wasn’t well and thought it would be an easy, light, enjoyable read. Average at best, mostly nonsense, trying too hard to be shocking

The Stranger in My Home by Adele Parks. This was incessant “me me me” moaning by the unlikeable main character. It’s the first Parks I’ve read and it’s put me off trying more?

However, I had more positive experiences before that…

Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. I’ve been putting this off because I loved Ninth House so much - does anyone else do that? I used to instantly devour any sequels the second they were released and now I put it off, I must’ve been burned once . But I really enjoyed this. Not quite as good as Ninth House but good nonetheless and glad I got round to it!

The Maidens by Alex Michealides. This gets criticised a lot but I liked it I was hoping for similar vibes to The Secret History, which I didn’t really get, but still, enjoyable.

And now I’m onto Demon Copperhead for a change of pace. Only a few % in but I’ve got a good feeling about it

My May reads were a mix up of kindle unlimited and Prime and I think my ratings reflect that.

I finished The Woman Who Lied by Claire Douglas last night and think it might well be a 5 star for me, defintley at least a 4. I read The Girls Who Disappeared by her earlier this year and LOVED that one too so think I may have a new favourite thriller author. Going to try and make my way through the rest of her books, has anyone read any?

Went for a charity shop browse today and picked up two Frieda McFadden books, The Teacher and The Locked Door both in new condition and None of This is True by Lisa Jewell, also like brand new. All £1 each Then picked up the new Freida Mcfadden Housemaids book from The Works

I finally finished Daisy Haites and part of me knows the Magbolia Parks series is trash but the other part of me really needs to read the next one

I’m giving John Marrs a go next with What Lies Between Us as I’ve seen a lot of you recommending him.

Been listening to Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on audiobook (have read the actual book a few years ago) and I forgot how much I love it, it’s really good in audio format too.
