I just realised that the same topics come up regularly here; best Kindles, how to get into audio books, Kindle vs real books etc. On any other thread on here people would be like “we’ve already talked about this!”, “read the wiki”, “just search for what you want” etc. But us lot are always just so happy someone’s talking about books that we rehash the same conversations to welcome someone in and make them included. What a lovely bunch we are ❤

You know how much I love a visual, so here is todays charity shop buy 🤩

I was so tempted to buy it from Asda yesterday too! I did end up buying The List of Suspicious Things in hardback. I thought it was really well priced at £6.

I honestly dont mind answering but I have wild paranoia that others are sick to death of hearing me say the same things. 🤣

Whole heartedly agree with you though 🥰

I read this last week. I really enjoyed it, at the time I marked it down from a 4 to a 3.75 due to the ending but on reflecting I think the ending was probably fitting for the message the author was trying to convey.

With regards to audiobooks. I started by listening and reading along to get use to the flow. Then slowly started to listen when I was walking my dog. Now, it comes naturally and listen to it like it's a podcast.
Also can depend on the actual book and the narration of course. Some narrations are awful lol
Agreed, for me it's all about the narration. Ones done by actual actors tend to be the best. A lot of the classics are often narrated by theatre lovvies and TV stars. I liked the first two Richard Osman books narrated by Leslie Manville because she has a nice voice, imo. However, Fiona Shaw did the third book and I had a harder time getting through it because I didn't think she was as good, and these books were the same author/series so in this case the change of narrator put me off. I've enjoyed some Shakespeare and James Bond stuff narrated by Toby Stephens, Samuel West, etc, and also some Agatha Christies narrated by Emilia Fox. It's a bit of trial and error though because one person's golden voice to their taste is another person's nails-on-chalkboard voice :ROFLMAO:

Yes! I think actors are often great at narration. I am not a big audiobook person but one narrator who I adore is Juliet Stevenson.

I don’t read dark academia type books so I’m not sure if it’s me or the book. 🤔 I’m not wanting to pick it up and a lot of the characters are so nasty.
I don’t think it’s you, I’m pretty sure a lot of the reviews that made me hesitate picking it up said similar. That being said I was still almost tempted to pick it up in Sainsbo’s earlier.

For me with audio I started with non fiction only. I stuck with non fiction for such a long time. Mainly sticking to memories or books about stuff that I find interesting (politics / social commentary)

It took me a long time to be able to listen to fiction.
I feel like I’m constantly saying ‘what @Caffeine Fiend said..’ BUT same here, non-fic audio works for me. However, I’m currently listening to Educated which I feel is in a more ‘story’ style with the narrator voice acting different people so this could be my gateway to fiction.
The narrator is Julia Whelan who I’ve seen recommended a lot!

Chiming in to agree.
I’m disappointed - I was hoping to get into the series and by get into I mean get mildly obsessed with.. next time I’m near The Works I’m hoping I can find Binding 13 and ignore adulting for 800+ pages.
Reply to my own comment with the update that I bought the last copy of Binging in my local Works earlier.. when I noticed there was only one or Keeping left so that fell in my hand too..
Finishing my current book and hopefully starting tomo!

I’m not even halfway through yet and not sure if I should keep going with it. It feels so slow and although things have happened it’s not gripping me.

Listening to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and it’s good, I’m enjoying it but jeez I wish she’d only had 5 husbands because it’s going on and I’ve still 2 hrs left 🙄😂

For anyone who has read Black Cake, how did you find it?

i’m finding it hard to really get into it as it has so many different perspectives (unless that changes down the line) only about 100 pages but have had 5 different perspectives so far!
I just finished this one, I did enjoy it, but thought there were far too many side characters and just as I was getting into one characters' story the POV would change. Would rather it just focused on the main characters' story in a bit more of a linear way.

yeh that’s how I feel about it already! i will stick with it for now and see how I feel in another 100 pages 🤣

i can see why it was made into a tv show though with all the different POV’s

i STRUGGLED with evelyn hugo tbh (even though it improved on a reread) - i feel like she had to spell everything out and just make sure that we were following it, and i wasn’t into it. five husbands would have been better 🤣

I know there was a lot of love for The Satsuma Complex on previous threads, I am reading it now. Am about a third in. Should I stick with it? Does the actual storyline become clearer, I don't know what is meant to be happening?

I really enjoyed The Other Mother's. Also bought my copy from Asda.
Just finished The List of Suspicious Things (also Asda!). Oh my word, what a fabulous, fabulous book. A full 5* from me. Absolutely loved it. 👏 👏
Now totally changing tack and starting In Memoriam by Alice Winn.

Anyone read the Throne of Glass series? I’m on Heir of Fire and struggling a bit!
I could have written this! I’ve had to extend my loan on Borrowbox, I’m skipping bits left right and centre and I’ve still got over 400 pages to go 🙈

i didn’t enjoy it tbh, after having seen rave reviews I was excited to get into it but it just fell flat and the humour felt very forced imo

Has anyone any tips on how to stick with audiobooks?

I am trying to read A Court of Silver Flames (my first audiobook) and I am struggling. My attention wanders and I end up rewinding. I feel like I would have read the book by now. I have downloaded it to my kindle and half planning on giving up on audiobooks. I tried to listen when cleaning and driving and when doing mundane tasks. When reading I have been dying to finish work to read a few chapters but the audiobook hasnt got me as gripped.
So I always had this issue, I read a tip the other day about checking the speed, if you're a fast reader, and you find your mind wandering in audiobooks, it's probably too slow for you. I've changed mine to 1.25 and it made a massive difference, got through half of Anna O yesterday.

I've slowly been getting my reading mojo back this year, so far have read:
Silence of the Girls
Women of Troy
A Lethal Legacy
Though the bodies fall
Hearts and Bones
The Girls who disappeared
Caraval
The only one left behind
Home before dark
Gild
and I'm currently halfway through Legendary, Caravals sequel, I also have the 3rd book Finale ready to go, Glint, Gilds follow on, Black Sun, and Once Upon a Broken Heart, all sitting here waiting to be read.
Not going to lie, I'd be lost without my library now :D

I just finished listening to Lisa Jewels ‘none of this is true’. I have Spotify premium and with the subscription you get 15 listening hours per month of audio books. I only found this out last week wish I’d known sooner! The book was good I did enjoy it but seemed a bit dragged out. Probably my least favourite Lisa jewel book so far. I go between my kindle and listening to audios. I enjoy listening whilst I’m cleaning, cooking, getting ready and driving 🥰
