Just finished False Witness by Karin Slaughter. She writes excellent thrillers. Onto the book club pick now!
Well I finished the housemaid last night, I also started it yesterday lunchtime on my break

After seeing her post I've now also purchased Snowflake by Louise O Neil and My Body by Emily Emily Ratajkowski.
I would HIGHLY recommend The Girls by Emma Cline.

Its a great book. Hope you enjoy.
I read it and didn’t hate it but also didn’t understand why it was so popular? The narrator got on my nerves and I don’t feel compelled to read the rest of the series
I also wasn’t blown away by the book. I’ve got the second in the series on my TBR but not compelled to pick it up any time soon.
BUT… if you have Sky or Now TV there is an tv series adaptation of it that is some of the most wonderful telly I’ve seen in ages. Theres 3 series so far so assuming theres one more to come. It’s one of those rare examples of the tv series being way better than the book. Plus they’re in Italian with subtitles (don’t let that put you off!) so it sort of counts as reading!
this is pretty much how i felt about it but i did read the rest of the series
something about them intrigued me to continue and i found they got better and the third book in particular was the best - however i also agree that their extreme popularity confuses me. the writing style is very passive and non-emotional, and it focuses on the least interesting character in the whole cast. the tv series, as mentioned above, is excellent though.
I love a series of books and hoped it would be the first that I would love. Sadly no. I think it got lost in translation!
I am getting strict now about not persevering with a book. If it isn’t grabbing me it interferes with my reading mojo. I find I go online to avoid the book I should be reading. So out they go, into the charity bag. Start a new book.
I just checked these to see if we get the same deals in Australia but no dice haha. I’ll have to hunt around to see if we get some first of the month deals too

Never got round to downloading Daisy Jones and the Six but can imagine it’s far better than reading it.
I cheated and skim read it. Apart from the writing style I also didn’t like the story.
I could see what the author was trying to do but I couldn’t carw about any of the characters because of the way the book was written.
I do however think the tv show will be great

I bought 13 books in the monthly deals 🫣 my TBR pile is never going down.
I don’t know what to start next as I just can’t stop thinking about Young Mungo. it’ll be a book that stays with me for such a long time. I’ve seen it compared to A Little Life and called Shuggie Bain 2 a lot but I mostly disagree

I wouldn’t disagree that it could be seen as trauma porn, but I didn’t see it that way, maybe that’s to do with experiencing life in a similar sort of area (which I did during an arguably better time) but people absolutely do live like that, and while I obviously found it tragic, I didn’t find it exaggerated or unbelievable. I felt like with A Little Life the author was doing it for her own pleasure and the attention/debate that would come from it, I didn’t get this feeling from Douglas Stuart, it felt too real.
I think that’s a part of why I found that (and Shuggie) so sad. Growing up I don’t know how many young boys I knew that just had the life beaten out of them before it even really begun, and so often it ends in a life of violence, crime and destitution with no real lasting happiness. It’s a vicious cycle that I think Douglas Stuart captures so well - how long until the perception of a person like Mungo goes from a promising, bright young boy to just another waster (for lack of a better word) living his life the way he’s told he should. I’m sure a deep dive of Mo Maw would reveal a lot that would make us see her in a sympathetic light, but throughout the book we just see her as she is now, not within the context of the life she’s had. I think most people think they’re doing the best they can, which sadly often isn’t enough, but they’ve never learned any other way.
I really loved the sibling dynamics, I loved Jodie and I did enjoy the relationship between Mungo and Hamish (again Hamish was doing what he thought needed to be done to protect Mungo, despite it being horrific and not what ungo needed). All the characters felt so real and properly developed. Loved poor wee Chicky 🥹
the writing was poetic, so beautiful and really encapsulated the setting and time so so well. There’s just so many layers to it which could be discussed over and over.
In terms of it being Shuggie the 2nd, I can understand why people would feel that way, but I was never listening to it feeling like I’d already heard it all before. I would be interested to see what he does next though as I’m not sure a 3rd with the same dynamic would go down well commercially, I would read it but I’d like to see him tackle something different. I think I’m definitely going to get Shuggie Bain on audible and reread, the narrator was amazing and really brought the story to life for me.

I found some books via this thread, bought some from depop and bought some from amazon. I know have about 8 books to read yet I'm going to the library today to collect 5 books that have been waiting for me to collect so I'll have to read them first. It's a slight addiction at this point!!I got to so overwhelmed the other day with all the books I needed to read that i already owned that I wrote a list of them on my notes app and now I've started to tick them off it feel a lot better
Not a fan either. Bought the first two books when they first came out and got so bored that I didn't finish the first one.
I do think my brain reacts very differently to translated books. For some reason they feel a bit off to me and I rarely enjoy them. So it could have been partly down to that in my case.
