i find john irving supremely hit or miss - disliked owen meany but loved the cider house rules and widow for one year. he has a lot of weird quirks in his writing and they’re really at the forefront in apfom (in my opinion anyway!) for 99p it’s definitely worth a try though.

I know what you mean! Although since I’ve started using StoryGraph this year I’m thinking I should track pages read rather than number of books to get round my aversion to anything over 350 pages!
Ooooh this is an interesting point. My sister does actually consider book purchases in this manner, she refuses to buy any book under 200pages as she feels robbed, whereas I am too easily intimidated by lengthy tomes.Think of the value for money?

Oh this is interesting a strategy! I do think my book tracking habits have made me start to gamify reading and it takes some of the pleasure out of it when I feel under pressure to read to a certain schedule etc to reach targets.
Yes! I noticed it particularly in January when I read Great Circle. It’s a chunky book anyway and quite slow paced, plus I was sick for a couple of weeks and my usual bedtime reading took a hit so it took a while to get through. I loved the book and really was enjoying it but I also found myself getting annoyed at how long it was taking to finish purely because I knew it was going to put me behind on reading targets - even though these are targets I set myself and don’t share with anyone else so they’re completely irrelevant really! It’s crazy when you think about it!
I’m not sure if number of pages would just shift the problem to a different target to chase but I think it would certainly help expand my book choices. I’m currently finding myself checking out the length of something before I even look at the synopsis which can’t be right!

Have been to the library for the first time in forever today! Also bought a couple of books in Waterstones - Lessons In Chemistry and Mothers Boy, and picked up Girl A in a charity shop. I'm so bad I have so many books to read on my kindle but I just can't stop getting more!
I'm reading Lessons in Chemistry now. Heard mixed opinions about it so we'll have to see how I get on!

Hope you feel better soon. Sudafed and Strepsils are the way forward!I have a weekend of housework (ugh!) but once it’s done I’m going to reward myself with some serious reading time!

But yeah scrolling social media or watching TV is much easier when ill. Maybe I can at least use this time to make a list of books I want to read next!
I know Notes on an Execution got mixed reviews on here - I just read her previous one Girl in Snow and thought it was really good. I think many of you will much prefer it. Only 99p on Amazon.
I’m currently just over 3/4 of the way through Reputation by Sarah Vaughan and I’m loving it! I don’t really read thrillers, but I’m hooked. It’s so well-written
I am really ashamed when I check my online banking and see all the 99p payments to Amazon 
Finished The Housemaid yesterday. It was ok, preferred the start to the ending.

Also hello! I’m new here, but I’m so glad I’ve found a community of book lovers. I’ve been an avid reader since I was a child and I’m still loving reading. I read 36 books last year! Don’t ask! My house is like a library haha. I’ve currently read 3 books this year (The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark, and Driftwood by Cathy Cassidy). For this year I’m going to take my time reading books as I have felt that the past few years I’ve been mostly speed reading haha.
